Zombies, The - Whenever You're Ready Lyrics

Well, I've been hurt but I still love you
I've been hurt like this before, oh, yeah

You're not teaching me a new thing
Try to realise and call me when you're ready
Whenever you're ready

I know you laugh but I still love you
And though I've cried like this before

You're not teaching me a new thing
Try to realise and call me when you're ready
Whenever you're ready

But if you call me
You've got to treat me in a different way
And if you call me
You've got to listen, girl, to what I tell you

And never hurt me, 'cause I love you
Never hurt me like before, oh, yeah

You're not teaching me a new thing
Try to realise and call me when you're ready
Whenever you're ready

You're not teaching me a new thing
Try to realise and call me when you're ready
Whenever you're ready

All you gotta do is call, call me, call me
You know
Call me, call me, call me,
Call me

Call me

  2. b.... ....

Again , keep sending nice anyways ☝️

  3. b.... ....

    Recicved. This too ☝️🍎

  4. S.... R....

Used to get teased and get called old in middle school because I listened to "old music". Not my fault music was better in the 60s. To this day I find myself echoing that opinion.

  5. T.... ....

I love the Zombies. Can't help but feel they are one of the most underrated bands of the British Invasion of the 60s

  6. P.... P....

They can only be killed by a direct blow to the brain... or decapitation.

  7. S.... M....

    cool voice

  8. T.... C....

The Voice , harmonies and melody just great.

  9. a.... d....

    Let me just say wow

  10. K.... F....

These guys were sweet and never got the love they deserved. Go Zombies!

  11. K.... F....

They were! Right up there with Herman's Hermits back in 1965

  12. L.... T....

    Love Them😍

  13. e.... ....

how this was not a monster hit is, for me, one of the mysteries of the ages. an absolute masterpiece.

  14. g.... h....

Bigger here in the States than in their own country..

  15. F.... 5....

    Very cool band

  16. A.... Y....

Beautiful. How it failed to chart is a mystery. Chord progression, harmonies, superb jazzy instrumental ... it has, like, everything.

  17. o.... ....

I still have trouble to understand why everyone knows Beatles and very few know Zombies. These guys are awesome!

    o.... ....

Beatles came first and the floodgates opened because of them. Second, sheer volume of output they had over a seven year period dwarfs whatever everyone else was able to counter with. Best of the Zombies can stack up with anybody, but quality depth is what separates the Beatles, Stones and Zeppelin from their British contemporaries from 1964 to 1977.

    o.... ....

I knew of this group-certainly a legit band that was part of the British Musical Invasion' (64-65). Plenty of hits not only in both their native country of the UK and here, but worldwide. (Japan, Philippines and the Netherlands).

  18. B.... H....

The only band that could have truly gave The Beatles a run for their money...

    B.... H....

Brandon Hemmie don't forget about the kinks! Such a lovely band they were.

  19. J.... A....

This Should've been a huge hit!

    J.... A....

This song always reminded me of two other songs: The opening piano reminds me of "Daniel" by Elton John, and the vocal harmony chord at the very end reminds me of the vocal harmony chord The Beatles strike in their cover of "You Really Got a Hold On Me".

Aside from that, yes... great track. Should have been bigger.

    J.... A....

so should have their own, I LOVE YOU

    J.... A....

Back then, in the Fall of 1965, when 'Whenever You're Ready' was released, it all depended upon where you lived in the US. There were then what the record industry called 'Regional Hits' where a record could be a big hit in - say - Portland, Oregon, Miami, Florida, and a few other 'markets', but not become a national hit. 'Whenever You're Ready' was one of those; a solid hit in the Providence, Rhode Island AM radio market - but, as I learned many years later, not a hit at all just 100 miles away in the Boston market.

I bought the 45 around the same time as I bought 'Get Off Of My Cloud' by the Stones and 'Over And Over' by the Dave Clark Five, both of which were big national hits. I didn't know the difference then; I presumed that 'Whenever You're Ready' was equally big across the US, but it wasn't. It was only a regional hit.

Great record, though, nevertheless - and from a great band who just got screwed again out of a place in the Hall of Fame.

I can remember listening to my transistor late at night and pulling in AM radio stations from as far away as Chicago. It was on one of those Chicago stations that I first heard 'She's Coming Home' by The Zombies - but it was never played in the Providence market, that I know of. It took me a year or longer before I finally found a copy (with a picture sleeve!) in the remainder bin of some record store in Providence.

    J.... A....

almost a hit in NYC .. they played it and it charted there.

  20. B.... W....

all you gotta do is call me

  21. L.... L....

oh my! always something new and good. Had no idea The Zombies were so prolific

  22. P.... ....

The Jazz and Blues mix so well with the pop sound. This band is perfection. So many long lost bands there away hidden from the ignorance and liking to the Beatles. They were also good, but ignorance is bliss and listen to more bands from this time, you won't regret it.

  23. J.... K....

so happy to see young people leaving positive comments on this.

  24. j.... ....

too cool man, musics not what it used to be that's for sure

  25. F.... ....

    Dinosaur Jr. nailed this song

    F.... ....

It was okay. The jazz and blue influence wasn't there but it was decent.

  26. d.... l....

The vocals of this always sound like Dusty Springfield is participating...   I guess she influenced the boys,  too.

    d.... l....

+david lincoln brooks never came to me me before, but makes sense after all!

  27. S.... S....

    1996 here! :)

  28. n.... b....

    2000's baby here :)

  29. t.... ....

Thanks for the stereo version. In my Zombies playlist!

  30. M.... P....

    My favorite Zombies song!

  31. G.... M....

Colin sounds like Dusty Springfield on this one.

  32. b.... b....

    amazing!

  33. I.... G....

odessey is one of the best psych records of all time
this is one of my fav tracks off the first disc

    I.... G....

This isn't on Odessey And Oracle... Or at least not on the original.

  34. J.... P....

    nothing like the sixties, powerful!!

  35. S.... R....

My ear for music wasn't as good back then as it is now. Good find!

  36. b.... ....

    Just a different key

  37. s.... ....

On this day in 1965 {September 2nd} the Zombies performed "Whenever You're Ready" on the BBC-TV program 'Ready, Set, Go!'...
It reached #110 on Billboard's Bubbling Under chart...
The record's B-side, "I Love You", was covered by the group People three years later in 1968, it peaked at #14 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart and spent 18 weeks on the Top 100...

  38. o.... ....

Yeh, but "Time of the Season" was recorded two years later, so it's more or less the other way round...

  39. p.... ....

They were great days. I was 16 during the Summer of Love and 18 during the Summer of 69. I'm up in years now but wouldn't trade those days for anything. I saw Blind Faith in 1969, Jefferson Airplane in 1970 and saw the Who do the entire rock opera Tommy the same year. Mott the Hoople opened the concert. But wish I had seen Moby Grape. Their albums are classic to this day. QMS seemed to have a change in the lineup often but they were still great. I love Fresh Air and What About Me for starters.

    p.... ....

pmoyer50 hello what do you remember of summer of love?

  40. p.... ....

Have you ever listened to Thunderclap Newman? Check out the rereleased Beyond Hollywood album. They're mainly known for Something in the Air but have other great songs on the album. The first two albums by Mott the Hoople are also great. Have you ever listened to Moby Grape. They were a great band from the San Francisco area during the sixties. Quicksilver Messenger Service is also an excellent band from that era.

  41. n.... ....

I enjoyed them a lot and turned a friend on to them. Thanks for the heads up.

  42. p.... ....

I thought you might like Rhinoceros. The FM underground station I wrote earlier introduced me to them. They had two other albums but their first album that kicks off with When You Say You're Sorry I consider to be the best. Joe Walsh has once said that the group influenced him greatly. It was a supposed super group that was put together by Elektra Records back around 1968 or 1969 and was intended to be the new Cream. They were a great group and really tight as a band.

  43. n.... ....

Thanks. I'm listening to Rhinoceros right now. Couldn't find the whole album on YT but there's a few songs from the debut. When You Say You're Sorry is playing now.

  44. p.... ....

You've got good taste in music. Years ago the underground FM radio station in the Philadelphia area played a lot of Butterfield Blues Band, John Mayall and other greats. Back then they didn't even air commericals - just the occasional public service announcements. I used to have a Poco cassette with Picking Up The Pieces. Buffalo Springfield was great. The Band is another great group. Yeah, the Grateful Dead were awesome. Also noteworthy was the first album put out by Rhinoceros.

  45. n.... ....

Sadly I grew up in the era of MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. I, unlike most people of my generation, was into Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream and of course The Beatles. I had a copy of Are You Experienced when I was 7. Over the past several years I have gotten into Gram Parsons, Poco, Paul Butterfield, The Band, and especially The Grateful Dead. As to the Zombies, I was unfortunately unable to go but they played a free show in Albany, NY which isn't far from me.

  46. p.... ....

I have to agree with you that when it comes to disco the Bee Gees were the most tolerable. I'm just glad that I was in my early teens when the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion hit the shores of America. I'm a big fan of the Kinks from their beginnings through to the early 70's. I saw them live. Also saw Mott the Hoople and the Who in 1971. And one of the best concerts of all was seeing Blind Faith in 1969. Those were great days. Yeah, the Clash and London Calling. Great album.

    p.... ....

    Great band, The Kinks!

  47. n.... ....

Yes, they are in the Hall. I only mentioned them because while they did disco I don't hold that against them. lol. Actually, as far as disco goes, theirs is the best, and How Deep Is Your Love is actually a good song. I am not against rap, and in fact am a big fan of The Beastie Boys who revolutionized a new form of music. I am not really a fan of the Pistols. More of a Clash fan myself.

  48. p.... ....

I believe the Bee Gees have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their early material was excellent. I have never been a fan of disco or hip hop and rap. My definition of good rap music would be Talkin WWIII Blues by Bob Dylan. It was topical and witty. Another group that has been snubbed is Deep Purple. I especially liked their first two or three albums. The Sex Pistols were correct in calling the Hall a piss stain.

  49. n.... ....

I would be fine with Donna Summer, Public Enemy, Run DMC, etc etc etc, being in the hall if they changed it to The Hall of Popular Music. Bee Gees belong in the ROCK and ROLL hall of fame because they did great things before they went disco. You're right, Zombies should be there too. Really when picking a fave Beatles album there is no wrong answer...except Let it Be.

  50. p.... ....

Yeah, I agree that Rubber Soul and Revolver are in some ways better than Sgt. Pepper. Odessy and Oracle deserves to be in at least the top 25 albums out of 100. What's really criminal is that the Zombies haven't been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That piss stain even inducted Donna Summer the disco queen.

  51. n.... ....

I agree with your list but I put Revolver AND Rubber Soul over Sgt. Pepper. Pet Sounds is superb and Odyssey and Oracle should be more revered than it is today. Top 100 album lists will often either omit this album or have it in the 2nd half of the list rather than where it should be which is at LEAST top 25.

  52. n.... ....

Listen to the album Odyssey and Oracle, which can be found in full here on YT

  53. n.... ....

Ask a random person if they have heard of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield in the same band. Ask them about the Band (until you start naming songs many will be confused) You are 100% right. Long live Sopwith Camel and The 13th Floor Elevators.

    n.... ....

That debut LP from Sopwith Camel is just excellent, nolanfan626 , but something terrible happened to them right afterwards and I don't know what that was. Their 2nd (and final) LP was a horrible, embarrassing disgrace. Was their doom all down to money, egos and drugs? Anybody know?

  54. n.... ....

I am a HUGE fan of the Zombies, one of my all time faves but The Stones, The Who, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard, Cream, and countless others are better than they were. And I like the Zombies more than some of the bands I listed but based on musical talent, breadth of work, longevity and inspiration, they fall short. Odyssey and Oracle IS my favorite album from the 60's that wasn't released by The Beatles or Dylan though.

    n.... ....

I read somewhere that they went into the studio to record 'Whenever You're Ready' with the presumption that it would be a huge hit.

  55. D.... M....

Came a crossed this randomly. I now have a new band to get to know.

  56. t.... ....

    so true

  57. T.... K....

    Sweeeeeeeet!

  58. b.... ....

Bono? This is to good for Bono to listen to.

  59. p.... ....

@jrh98033 : They wrote most of their music as did the Beatles. Unfortunately, before or shortly after Odessey and Oracle came out they had disbanded. The three best albums from the 60's would be Sgt Pepper, Pet Sounds and Odessey and the Oracle which was a masterpiece.

  60. b.... 1....

I like The Beatles and The Zombies but I prefer The Zombies. There is something different about them. Well that is what I think.

  61. T.... K....

let the dead rest and enjoy their music.

  62. F.... ....

anyone know who wrote this one? sounds like an argent but iv been fooled before...

  63. j.... ....

@hakeelon Considering that the Zombies recorded Odessey and Oracle at Abbey Road Studios "...where earlier in the year The Beatles had recorded Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pink Floyd recorded The Piper at the Gates of Dawn...," I think the Zombies were contemporary with the Beatles. Despite the Zombies' start in 1961, they didn't get big until 1968 after Odessey. The Beatles "invaded" America in 1964.

  64. S.... F....

i cant believe that no one heard of this band....they deserve much more publicity ,,,,i guess the beatles took over

  65. G.... P....

    a classic!

  66. L.... W....

I can't believe that this song never cracked the Top 40...the lyrics certainly influenced Bono . Same theme as "One" or "With or Without You."

  67. B.... B....

I hate it when i say, im listening to the zombies and people immidietly think its black ops :/

  68. S.... ....

The Zombies are in my top five favorite bands, out of about 200.

  69. p.... ....

Oh, god; the nostalgia is killing me....

  70. T.... D....

I was fortunate to have had this as part of the fantastic soundtrack of my youth.

  71. j.... ....

    @93Newyorker97

    my first though.

  72. H.... A....

who tha fuck is this 'kamper66'

  73. p.... ....

Man, can these guys come up with some gorgeous harmonies.

  74. m.... ....

badly underrated, like the Small Faces and many others

  75. B.... B....

...superb piano solo for the era.

"Whenever You're Ready" is among my favorite obscure tunes
    that should've been hits...

  76. n.... ....

    dated=retro super cool

  77. n.... ....

I love the new vid of this song from 2009- They sound great. Colin whispers a bit more on the recording, and Chris Whites vocals are missing, but otherwise its like a trip back the swinging 60's.

  78. S.... R....

you may or may not notice a baseline similar to the one in "time of the season".

  79. n.... ....

Colin is beautiful and the others are nice looking.

  80. M.... F....

I think it must be the recording engineer counting them in on 9 at the very start of track when the band is still figuring out how to play this thing. The Zombies were really ambitious and took risks with the pop format. Remember they were 20 at the time. This is great.

  81. L.... E....

Seriously dated. This sounds like every second-rate psychedelic pop tune recorded from '65 to '69.

  82. c.... ....

..slightly differs to the single version...

  83. M.... ....

    What a great song!

  84. B.... B....

    ...their best "non-hit".

Rod Argent absolutely drives this tune with his electric piano work throughout...

  85. B.... R....

Listen for example Tiffany Shade, Superfine Dandelion etc... they also make great music and they are unknown =(

  86. P.... G....

Classic, feel good 60's tune! I haven't heard this song for about 20 years, until today. Such a catchy tune.

  87. N.... B....

My mom used to sing this song when she was doing the dishes... this, and help by the beatles. Such good memories.

  88. J.... K....

These are good songs.. and sometimes I would just like one voice singing them..

  89. g.... ....

    Wow!!!! Great song.

  90. t.... ....

Is this a cover of a Motown song, or a Zombies original?

  91. B.... R....

Now there is also many underrated band's.

And btw: there is many many rock, blues, pop-rock, band's from 60's wich are great, but 99% of musicfans never heard about them.

  92. J.... R....

Great song. It brings back so many memories from the sixties when I was growing up.

  93. G.... E....

I'd love to hear "goin out of my head "again..They made the song for me.
