Zombies, The - Hung Up On A Dream Lyrics
Well I remember yesterday
Just drifting slowly through a crowded street
With neon darkness shimmering through the haze
A sea of faces rippling in the heat
A sweet vibration seemed to fill the air
I stood astounded, staring hard
At men with flowers resting in their hair
A sweet confusion filled my mind
Until I woke up only finding
Everything was just a dream
A dream unusual of its kind
That gave me peace and blew my mind
And now I'm hung up on a dream
They spoke with soft persuading words
About a living creed of gentle love
And turned me on to sounds unheard
And showed me strangest clouded sights above
Which gently touched my aching mind
And soothed the wonderings of my troubled brain
Sometimes I think I'll never find
Such purity and peace of mind again

Fuck off you big idiot @numbers.
Still playing live today

Me too.
The whole album is alive!!!! 💎
Great song. Tiny bit of twin peaks in the intro.
Its above peppers
I like it but the music overpowers the voice.
This song is one of the great masterpieces but especially beginning with that trippy baroque at 00:48 beautifully blending into that hard piano tempo change. The chorus at the end, the harmonies, endless beauty here.
woah this is intense
At 2:20 when he sings "..never find", dragging out the word "find" it just kills me, it's so heartfelt.
I love this song! What a great album!! Here it is! This sounds better in 2019 than it did in 1968!! WRONG!! It sounds as great NOW as it always did! THANK, God , they are FINALLY in the Rock Hall! Peace and Love! Steve
I don't think I shall ever find, such purity and peace of mind again.
Very Beautiful indeed it sounds like 70's music. Because the song is definitely out of this time. The Zombies were talented indeed. Thanks for posting because they're worth listening to.
Clearly influenced by "Sound of Silence" from SAG.
Lindo Demais!
I like the way it aggressively pulls you in to it's sublime world!
This song makes me feel nostalgic for a time I wasn't alive in lol.
This song is amazing for how catchy it is while being so weird. The basic verse chord progression is G/Em/C/Emajor. It's the change from the minor to the major that is the hook. Argent was really good at going from majors to minors (or vice versa) where it shouldn't have worked and finding a good melody for it. It's elite level songwriting.
Totally, you see a lot of modern psych rock bands trying to do this these days now all the time
Well im glad their at least trying! We need a vast garbage disposal for what is so popular today. That's just me though. That means nothing! 😆
Sometimes i think i'll never find
Such purity and peace of mind agaaaain
This song sounds exactly like the closer to an epic Who-esque rock opera. Great stuff. I think this shoulda been put after Time of the Season on the album.
The Avalanches brought me here. Great song!
A favourite.....mellotron landscape
This Album is full of heartbreakers... but this one has always haunted me the most.
Joe B this whole album is like gospel
Here's a fun game. Sing the lyrics of "A Day In The Life"' to this melody.
I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
dpaul428 the zombies beat the Beatles x10000000
@Def Operator eh... not really. They have 1 amazing album. The Beatles have like 5
My God, take me meow!!! ❤
Such a brilliant, strong and beautiful song.
Fabuleuse

Nikki D The whole album is as well. Fantastic. Best word I have for it. Or masterpiece.
So gorgeous
Red Road brought me here 2!
Someone recommend some songs like this to me, please!
"If I Knew You Were The One" by Richard Twice, "One Day The Train Never Came" by The Consortium".
"M.E.S. (Mailbox Execution System)" by 1-2-6, , "Goodyear" by Five Day Rain.
Jake The Snake Jim Sullivan-jerome
Margo Guryan "Think Of Rain"
Similar feel: Amen Corner-If Paradise is Half as Nice, Honeybus-I Can't Let Maggie Go. Both big UK hits but not in the US.
great song!
i wish ive lived i the 60s!!!!
Well The Zombies are still touring and still led by Colin and Rod. Worth ten times the admission, believe me!
Red Road brought me here.
Thanks Alex, I respect this recommendation.
I think the voices at the end are singing "sublime"........................but maybe that's my imagination!
+SuperNevile "Gentle Love"
+Philmod68 Thanks a lot!!....You say below you saw them doing this live.......great.
+SuperNevile YES I did! It was AMAZING! Brought me to tears....
@Philmod68 Colin and Rod played Scarborough a few years ago. Wish I'd gone. Friend went and had a brilliant evening. He was able to chat to Colin afterwards and asked why he hadn't sung "This Is Your Captain Calling"....cheers.
Anyone know what the background vocalists are saying in the last bit?
I think their saying changed my life. Don't quote me! 😊
Thank you I never interpreted it that way but now that mention it, it totally does sound like that they're saying that. :)
+Sean Coolahan They are singing "Gentle Love". When i saw them some months back preforming this song....i was like...."ahh that is what they are saying".....awesome line!
What a voice colin has
O & O cost £1000 to make (Sgt Pepper cost twenty five times that). The band put up another £200 for the stereo mix. The "Time Of The Season" single went on to sell 2 million copies worldwide. Incredibly, the album wasn't released in the US until 1969, after prompting by Al Kooper
This and "This Will Be Our Year" are the relatively hidden gems on O&O. Actually it's all gems, I just especially adore the way those sparkle.
Chris White: "Hung Up On A Dream" was our token flower power song, but we were never influenced by psychedelic drugs or any drugs whatsoever. There was this one period where there was this incredible hope, around the time of Monterey, and we believed in it too, it wasn't cynical. -- Zombie Heaven box set book
This song may not be too impressive on first listen, but once you get it stuck in your head it feels exactly like when you remember a dream.
@SufferingFoolsMusic I thought the same at the beginning, but the final verse/outro with the choir, mellotron, jangle guitar and piano raises it into something else
Just found The Zombies, lovin' em'.
One of the most unusual songs I have ever heard. No beginning or end, just JOY!
This may be my favourite on the album - the piano melody in the intro gives me the chills, and the sounds here make an amazing psych-pop atmosphere.
I hear a bit of proto prog in this song also mainly due to the mellotron.
Don't forget the mellotron!
Acabei de conhecer
I can't wait to see the ZOMBieS today in SF
dislikes? really? weirdos
Beautiful song!!!
Love this song!
Old trends. Newer reality.
:57 though
vote for the Zombies for RRHOF
"Sometimes remind me Morrissey's voice!"
Not really. Lol
Mike Pinder introdused the mellotrone to John Lennon , you can se Mike

Moody Blues forever 💙💙💙
Far and beyond The Beatles music in my opinion, and i'm a diehard Beatles fan!
Don't get much better than this!
Timeless...
I love this song, and this album. They never get old. Thank you for posting.
None at all, other than their both probably about lsd...lol
Underrated band, underrated album, underrated song.
GOODNESS WHY ARE THEY SO UNDERRATED
Does anyone here see a slight resemblance to the Beatles Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds? Although I think it stands by itself
If you're from the '60's, you're not old! I wish I lived back then! :)
250,000 views and counting. Conclusion: this "unknown" song is great and should have been a hit.
omg best
Why is this not more famous? Everyone always cites "She's Not There," "This Will Be Our Year," and, of course, "Time of the Season," but this is their best song! (In my opinion, of course.)
This song and "Changes" are my favorites from the album. Both are melancholic but beautiful.
The whole album is amazing!
Man I wished they would have played this when I saw them last March.
Oooohhhhhh, PBS! Yes!
Interestingly enough, it was used out of necessity more than anything else . . . as a cost-saving measure. At the time it was developed in the eaarly 1960s it was not intended for the use we all associate it with today. I remember an interview with Rod Argent - probably around the time of the success of 'Hold Your Head Up" - wherein he stated "We used mellotron instead of strings and only used session men on one track [This Will Be Our Year]. I think it sounds bloody good for what it cost."
'68 I think
For me, this is the best song from the album.
does anyone know what year this was released?
A sweet confusion filled my mind
Until i woke up only finding everything was just a dream
A dream unusual of its kind
That gave me peace and blew my mind
What an incredible album. Soundtrack to th best days of my life.
umf asddsadanvaojvj
the zombies > life
Best song
np, i love The Zombies
Sorry, your opinion is a fanboy opinion..
This song would not have been out of place on the Beach Boys' "Sunflower" album two years later.
"Sunflower" is the second-greatest Beach Boys album after "Pet Sounds."
A unique achievement....showing the way forward to all music movements of the 70's....Tony Banks and Steve Hackett must have wept to this ANTHEM....
Hung up on a dream - nice band!
You'd probably love the first Left Banke album.... assuming you don't already have it.
Hi everyone, I am an old fart from this era. Started playing professionally at age 16 in 1967. This is my music. You should also listen to : Rodriguez - Cold Fact; Pearls before Swine - The Jeweller; Yes - Close to the Edge; early Moody Blues; and Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (absolute classic jazz album). Good listening folks. G.
Hey old fart ;-) thanks for the recommendations! I was born ‘85 and from my generation you should try Weyes Blood (Andromeda) Cut Worms (Song To The Highest Tower), King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (Robot Stop), Big Thief (Shark Smile)
Agreed, Zombies is my 3rd favorite band (1st Beatles then Monkees)
Groovy Man!
Of course, I love The Zombies, but, if we mixed both bands we kind of get some Pink Floyish sound.
this song reminds me of a great relation ship gone to shreds and you feel as tho its a dream
*as though it's a dream ;)
Zombies+Beatles= Pink Floyd.
I suppose.
So much good music in the sixties that buried in time...great to see people discover this after so many years....
Yeah you can tell it's a mellotron when the strings when sound like they've been recorded over twice
SoundsSimiliar to A day in a life by the Beatles..
