Zevon, Warren - Johnny Strikes Up The Band Lyrics

Dry your eyes my little friend
Let me take you by the hand
Freddie get ready Rock steady
When Johnny strikes up the band

They'll be rocking in the projects
Walking down along the strand
Freddie get ready Rock steady
When Johnny strikes up the band
Johnny strikes up the band
When Johnny strikes up the ...
When Johnny strikes up the ...
When Johnny strikes up the band

And Johnny is my main man
He's the keeper of the keys
He'll put your mind at ease
He's guaranteed to please
Back by popular demand

Look around, my little friend
Jubilation in the land
Freddie get ready Rock steady
When Johnny strikes up the band
Johnny strikes up the band
When Johnny strikes up the ...
When Johnny strikes up the ...
When Johnny strikes up the band

  3. J.... S....

    The King of the dudes.....

  4. S.... ....

This song is about the rise of American patriotism during the period that it was released. The "johnny" to whom Warren refers is John Philip Sousa.

  5. C.... D....

This is my tribute to the late John Reaves.
    REST IN PEACE JOHN..
FIRST AND TEN DO IT AGAIN..
    BANDITBALL!!

  6. m.... ....

Love Warren. He died of mesothelioma like my dad did. There was only one guy who talked about guns in his songs as much, and that guy was/is Marty Robbins. I think Warren's lyrics provided that cinematic effect ike Marty's did.

  7. c.... s....

It feels like 1982 again, 24, tan, hard and handsome...TJ STRUSKA

    M.... E....

Italian? Louis Prima, perhaps? Louis Prima functioning as publicity agent for that redoubtable guisepppe, Uncle Joe Stalin.

  20. W.... C....

What a unique soul......and with such a unique view and gift that he shared with us. Thank you Warren.....

  26. H.... S....

A tribute to Johnny Carson's band led by Doc Severinson- they were hot

    H.... S....

That is very true, also Freddy is Freddy De Cordova.

  27. E.... S....

I don't believe a Warren Zevon is ever going to be replaced why? because as the cliché goes God broke the mold, but when I want to complain I think what if God hadn't created a Warren, ive been a singer songwriter at Warner Bros 36 years and a kind and thoughtful soul took time to show me how to put what I really wanted to say in a song theirs not a day I don't think of him sometimes I cry we all still talk about Warren. He shared his beautiful soul with us all flawed and beautiful genius yes but above all a human oh God how I miss him,if you are one of the elect that enjoy his works just thank God I was playing keyboard on one of Bruce's tracks and mentioned Warren Bruce said, I can't talk about him today I'll never be over it.

    E.... S....

I think about him how he took me by the hand and actually said, let you by the hand little friend,i ask him one day why he spent those special hours with me he said, I see something special in you.Now I'm crying.

  28. S.... B....

  46. R.... F....

Such gorgeous balance in the mix and beautiful guitar work. I was addicted to Warren's music in the 80s.

  47. b.... v....

  49. M.... N....

Kevin Spacey as Warren when the movie is made of his life??

    M.... N....

Probably not a good choice anymore - but that blond guy from NCIS LA could pass as a sibling....he'd be a good choice.

  50. D.... L....

It's REALLY tough to decide because he is a genius as the album says, but I think this is his best. The music melds with his voice so perfectly!

  51. B.... S....

Rap "music" ? No way. This is genius

    B.... S....

rap music is a hell of a lot better than whatever this is

    B.... S....

This is where rap came from. Listen to the lyrics and feel the music.

  56. J.... M....

    Jackson Browne brought me here.

    J.... M....

Jackson has done a fine job of helping keep Warren's musical legacy alive.

  57. g.... ....

Warren Zevon was pure genius, and we were cheated of too many years of his brilliance.

    g.... ....

gvbezoff I just wish we could sacrifice an *awful* artist to bring back good ones like Warren! I doubt anyone would truly miss Kid Rock or Lil Wayne.

    g.... ....

Fuck asbestos, and fuck any "excitable boy" who says we should bring it back.

  58. S.... ....

This is my favorite song, I've been listening to it since i was five and it's the epitome of nostalgia for me.

  59. A.... C....

    I'm ready!!

  60. W.... F....

My nickname at my old job was "Freddie" (and I was in a band). Enjoy every sandwich - to the Nth degree.

  61. M.... W....

No wonder this song has no dislikes......fantastic song

  62. m.... ....

I could use just a little more COWBELL!!!!

    J.... J....

    Jeanne, you need a shooter

  67. A.... J....

I am huge fan of this late great singer songwriter and got everything including the albums that didn't do a great deal but for me he will be remembered for great deal more than werewolves of London

  68. O.... ....

Waddy Wachtel's guitar break in this song is on my list of favorite solos; tasteful and tuneful. And I agree 100% with Tristanandlsolt's comment: the Excitable Boy LP is an underrated classic. I saw Warren Zevon live in '78 when that album was really popular, at the outdoor Universal Amphitheater in LA. It was a beautiful summer night and he play and played, until they actually pulled the plugs on the amps. So Zevon invited the people who were still there to come down to the front so he could play one more: "Hasten Down The Wind", just him on the piano with no microphone. 36 years later it is still one of my all-time concert moments ever.

    O.... ....

Great album and this is my fave song

    O.... ....

Damn! Sounds like heaven you lucky bum!:D

    O.... ....

Total agreement about Waddy's playing. Great tone, great notes, great phrasing ... totally musical and it fits the song.

    O.... ....

    I was there that night!
    Bitchin!

  69. R.... W....

This song is a great tribute to when Johnny (Lennon) reunited with the other Beatles, is my take, but not to be.....unfortuneately.

    R.... W....

The song is about Johnny Carson and the producer of The Tonight Show whose name was Freddy... absolutely nothing to do with the Beatles

  70. T.... ....

Excitable Boy is one of the best Albums ever made and this is one of the best from the album. An under-recognized song.

    T.... ....

I grew up on this album. Zevon was awesome. This is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like his later stuff. That guy was tough as nails. He found he had just 3 months left to live and just talked about sandwiches and dry cleaning on Letterman. RIP you bad ass mother f&%^(er

  71. W.... F....

Thanks, Warren, for writing "Outside Chance" for The Turtles, and this gem. One of the greatest singer/songwriters of the 20th century. This one should go to a movie soundtrack (if it hasn't already, that is). For my best pal from my youth (Jimmy W. -- RIP). For Little Steven's Underground Garage.

  72. h.... ....

Thanks for that request, Colette Bembenek; I'm waiting for that song, too.

  73. D.... M....

    So damn good!!!

  74. T.... H....

"My little friend" has made me grin since this came out.

  75. W.... ....

Mr. Zevon doesn't get the credit he deserves.

  76. C.... B....

Love this as it reminds me of this, Zevon's first album where he actually became noticed
big time. WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE UIPLOAD " Nightime in the Switchin' Yard" from
    this very same album? l
