Zevon, Warren - For My Next Trick I'll Need A Volunteer Lyrics
I can saw a woman in two
But you won't want to look in the box when I do
I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer
I can pull it out but I can't put it back
I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer
It's lonely up here
When the tricks have been played
And the spotlights have faded
And the plans that we made
Have fallen apart
It's lonely as hell
For a broken heart
You can put me in chains and I will escape
Better not wait up 'cause I might be late
I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer
It's lonely up here
When the tricks have been played
And the spotlights have faded
And the plans that we made
Have fallen apart
It's lonely as hell
And there's no magic spell
For a broken heart
I can saw a woman in two
But you won't want to look in the box when I do
I can make love disappear
For my next trick I'll need a volunteer

A comment on a Pony-Berserker cartoon on DeviantArt sent me here.
Motherfuck, were there a set of pipes on that guy
Truly a work of genius.
My dad has been watching this on my account hope he doesn't find my history😶😶😶
love some zevon genius
Gets me every time
Remember when people spent time and energy writing their songs?
back then consumers voted with their purchases, and record companies and radio would compete to work with musicians
now they collude with each other and the press, they take some 20 something yearold , give him/her recycled songs, then bombard all media until consumers think they like it
no risk for the producers, if the outcome is predetermined
Damn old son- I'll miss you
If you won't dance to this on a first date, thanks for your time, but take your tin foil swan and GTFO
Sometimes his songs hit really close to home.
such a catchy song
Thank you
I agree with the comments Brenda Harper left ,one day if this world stands they'll realize the marvelous and flawed man which only made him more loveable and adorable to my soul his humanity he openly displayed for all to see his failure in his eyes and wealth he left us all the anguish of the man his beautiful a oil displayed in his catching cynical wit that style amused the few that even appreciated it on that level alone making palpable but under that was a message to us all , suffering bewildered humanity, ill see him one day in the other demission ,Warren Zevon the greatest songwriter and poet and beautiful soul that graced planet earth for to short awile

εγινα αυτος ο ανθρωπος λοιπον
Plays a good harmonica
Bravo por este gran artista. Por encima de Elton John, Billy Joel, etc. WZ has punch.
I've been listening to a bunch of WZ's music on YouTube and they are ALL terrific. Just discovered him! What a voice and wonderful songwriter.
Warren Z was the man. That hormonica ❤❤❤

It's actually "when im through" and not "when i do" otherwise great
if the writer tom robbin became a singer, he'd become warren zevon
Clever son of a bitch.
Sounds a little like a Springsteen song, especially with the harmonica break
Imaging IF these two had collaborated on a tune or two..........
:O
@Dazza G disorder in the house!
@Dazza G Zevon and Springsteen DID collaborate on two songs: co-writing "Jeannie Needs A Shooter" and playing and singing together on "Disorder In The House" which won Best Folk Rock By A Duo Grammy, from WZ's last album, "The Wind", his only Grammy wins...and they were POSTHUMOUSLY awarded. Such bullshit*t!
It's magic time, baby.
My aspergers life loves this.
Sick song!!
I can also make love disappear. Right Ellen ?
One of a kind. Unique. Immensely gifted. Terrifyingly talented. Handsome. Sexy. Driven.
Courageous. Quirky. Irreplaceable. Irresistible. Funny. Endearing. Human. Flawed.
You could empty Webster's Unabridged Dictionary and not fully describe nor begin to do justice to Warren Zevon. And there's no fathoming the lack of appreciation for all that he is, and the fact that the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame has not inducted him only proves that they aren't fit to have him in it. Rock god? Nah. Zevon is so much more than that. Zevon is eternal. Rock the Pillars of Heaven, Mr. Bad Example! My ride's here...and I'll see you again soon.
"If you believe in forever than life is just a one night stand "AND THEN WARREN STRIKES UP THE BAND SCREW THE R&R hof
GOD BLESS YOU & TAKE GOOD CARE
Although I agree with you, I feel like Zevon would hate your way of going about it. Like an English teacher that only reads a book one way.
This song is modern Beethoven!
Wow! I was thinking the same thing. There are some definite Beethoven like chord progressions and dynamics.
WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Better 'Hair'..........
;)
@Krista Harris I came across your very sagacious comment tonite while listening to my personal God of Music. You have a musician's finely-tuned (you should pardon the unintentional pun!) ear; and your observations of Warren's subtle usage of classical dynamics woven into his music is spot-on. Of course you know he studied BRIEFLY with the great Neo-Classicist, Oleg. Stravinsky; but perhaps you AREN'T aware that he wrote a SYMPHONY. ..It has been perused and analyzed by composers and experts in music theory and structure, and the consensus is that, unfinished though it is, Warren's symphony is the work of a master composer. Now, is it unfinished, and disjointed in some parts? Yes. But these appear to be more a case of the composer (Warren) not being completely sure where he wanted to go with a musical phrase than any lack of knowledge or talent. Imagine if Amadeus had a SCREAMING Obsessive-Compulsive disorder he had to work around. Given that Warren fought a powerful psychological drive , one which often intruded itself upon his genius, Orpheus alone knows what heights he might have achieved, had he not had to fight such an obstacle. As it is, he remains an unparalleled composer/lyricist...an Absolute. Irreplaceable.
Astounding.
"No Spell for a broken heart "
the best
Zevon was perhaps America's most original and truely unique songwriter and best kept secret.
I think guitar or piano-based musicians feel deeply broken, and robbed. I do. But we won't let it die.
I agree with Brenda Harper's comments glad someone got it the untouchable Warren Zevon and so few realized he was the the greatest of the great one that ever graced planet earth and yes I know one day I'll see him again and if this world stands one day they'll realize what came and went silently into the night but his music dreams out to my soul ,never be again thank God he left this legacy of treasure.
EASILY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
♥
Wow, you said it best! Zevon is one of a kind, truly brilliant man.
Delicious irony, Warren! Being your own carnival sideshow barker: "Step right up!" Selling your extraordinary magic as third-rate, blundering, and more than apt to go wrong: "...better not wait up, cuz I might be late!" In "Life'll Kill Ya" Warren addressed the subject of his much-discussed rapacious sexuality with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. I think he was often baffled by the fact that what was unquestionably his business was so often questioned and criticized. HIS business. So he gave it to the snoops, both barrels: "You wanna know? Sure!" Hostage-O; Dirty Little Religion; For My Next Trick. Those songs were his wink at people's prurient interest in his personal life. But if Warren could wallow in the mud, he most assuredly could soar in the ionosphere: Ourselves To Know; Don't Let Us Get Sick; Fistful Of Rain. I hope the puritans who judge this unique man get their money's worth. He gave us his whole self in Life'll Kill Ya, and with his usual optimism, hoped the wise amongst us would understand. I like to think I do...
+Kat Harper I Think " My Ride's here " is Warren at his very best thats just me .You have great insight . Something hard to come by . Take good care of yourself . no need to respond i'm not trolling however one more thing you write very very well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Brian Grant Brian...I know you're with Warren now... ROCKIN' it like nobody's business. I'm sorry I took so long to see beneath your jocularity until it was too late. I came across this early communique' .....one I missed in the flurry of Zevon-based friendship that followed. Thanks, Bri...for the good laughs until it all went South. Give Warren my humblest regards...and I miss you, buddy...
both tornado's and fire love this song. logic dictates that a tornado of fire would love it too. logic is right! twenty seven thumbs up.
@Bob Dylan I home
There only one Robert Bird
"I can saw a woman in two,
But you won't want to look in the box when I'm through"
How come?
Just sayin' that's one of the best, classiest, worst, most vulgar couplet ever to hang an entire song on.
That's true.
And in the same song as "There's no magic spell for a broken heart." What a treasure this man was.
+Max William Lauf yes he was and that thread ran through most of his work, I believe that's how he dealt with the anguish he endured although sometimes self inflicted but he didn't hide that either maybe that's he was revered by so many artists in the industry but the masses just aren't used to looking in the mirror or dealing with that much honesty.
Love him, miss him...nobody can write em like WZ
me like magic clowns and bubbles....
I would like to see the lyrics to this song written down.

Your are so right.
same here 2019
Perfectly true and accurate..I think the 140 may be a little low...Remember The masses allowed George Bush to be "elected" twice?
**did not bring
* did not
Californication do not brought me here
Why do people keep mentioning that show? It wasn't any good!
I forgot best senses of humor. Sorry for the omission.
Warren Zevon undeniably had one of the senses of humor of any pop song writer. His songs about death, were, "Tongue-in-Cheek" humor. Like the song "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead". Or "Poor,Poor Pitiful Me". Warren's songs encompassed more subject matter and scope than any other rock lyricist. He could write a song like "Hasten Down The Wind" and then "Hit Somebody". A talented Genius.
Californication brings us ALL here.
:)
1958Shemp What does this have to do with that show?
Love this song! Wish there were a few power chords in it tho.
Californication brought me here.
Whatever it takes. Warren is far better than that show! Have you listened to more since that time?
CALIFORNICATION !
Weed, whiskey and Warren Zevon.
One of the first artists to mould my listening habits. What a down to earth guy. He had me hooked from age 10!
Well, that does not sound very surprising to me, since I've read Crystal's book. Still, much appreciate for the sharing you did. Warren's personality has been fascinating me ever since I started to get into his music. I can relate to him in every way, except - of course - for his talent. And intelligence. And the fact that he lived in LA. Join in my friend, to live to be a hundred and go down in infamy. It doesn't matter if we dream up things to do in Denver when you're dead once in a while!
You did? Lucky bastard. How would you describe his persona? He did enjoy, although you probably know he was sober for nearly 16 years, at least from 86 until his last few months. If it were me, I don't know but I probably would've done the exact same thing.
Absolutely.
no shit Derek, funny, irony ,all the shit in the world, everything that makes the world go by
JEEzuss, man, do i miss THAT man...
GOD, how I miss Warren...
So sad that I'm not born during his life-time
story of our lives, musically at least
Waren Zevon is the guy(or was) the one who said"give your fucking head a shake" the pea is Stuck
only this mans imagination, and sense of the macabre could produce such a tongue-in cheek
statement
I just realized why I like Warren Zevon, he reminds me of the deadpan humor of my cynical best friend... I have to quote the title of this one sometime, like when I actually do a solo (I'm a songwriter not a soloist)...
Yeah, I've had a couple of ex's who ( then ) I might of thought about it too. lol Trouble ((especially one of them) would've been getting her into the box!! Ha-Ha! Just kidding....sorta. : ) :D
I want my wife to volunteer for this part when I try it! Easy, easy, I'm only kidding.........
why does youtube suck so hard? and Warren Zevon was SO great.
Actually his first album did have a title. It was called "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Always a favorite, thanks
I always liked Warren Zevon and am proud to say I was around when he was first 'discovered' and his first album came out --- the late 70's -- no title, but his name was the biggie. On that album were some of songs the old hippies can recall...........
this song has been growing on me really hard lately for ome reason, i used to just listen to my shits fucked up
"Well I can saw a woman in two, but you won't want to look in the box when I'm through"....lol. Only Warren could grab ya with such a catchy opening line. : ) Naturally... it gets better. lol Thanks, appreciate your upload.
Franz Nicolay's version shits all over this song....Yeah ok.......IM SURE FRANZ FEELS THE SAME...ASSWIPE
Franz Nicolay's version shits all over this song...
Harvey Dixon
Very goddam astute, Amadeus! Like YOU are qualified to dump on Warren--Fucking--ZEVON??! Right! Rather like Helen Keller critiquing van Gogh's use of Colour and Texture!!!
This is just superb ... great song and sung in a way that really makes you really empathise with him on the failings of relationships ... Wayne
Warren, one of the all time greats
I get goosebumps when he sings 'there's no magic spell for a broken heart.'
@carrots001 ha ha thats the best explanation i have ever heard for zevon thank you.
@johnthehulk1 I once read an explanation from someone as to why Zevon was not more celebrated. It went something like: You can't write 140 IQ songs for a public that wants 40 IQ music. I think that about sums it up.
Another brilliant song by Warren. "LIfe Will Kill You" is a great CD. Zevon was brilliant through his entire song writing career. Just vastly under recognized, and not appreciated for brilliant prose. He was a story teller, as well as a composer. I consider him the "Van Gogh" of rock and roll. He wrote about his neighborhood, history, drug abuse, and love.
the audience dissappered, suddenly.
Nah my top fav of his now is My Shit's Fucked Up. I laughed so hard at that song I was crying. I hadn't heard that one and I thot I had all Warren's stuff. When my hubby and I were dating, he played me this weird looking album that had a big .45 in the middle of a plate of food. That turned me off right there to desecrate a fine piece of firepower. That was my first introduction to Warren Zevon I was hooked LOL!
@overzealousdump @mrtyuil Yeah, and Neil Young made contributions to two of Warren's albums.
This song is just unreal! what a genius
"I can saw a woman in two, but you wont want to look in the box when I'm through"
classic
Who the eff disliked this song??!
To me, along with Robert Allen Zimmerman, the best songwriters I've heard in my life!!! Too bad he will only write songs in Heaven now! R.I.P. Mr. Zevon!
To me, along with Robert Allen Zimmerman, the best songwriters I've heard in my life!
he is so missed the wonder of what incredible song is coming next is gone :(
Dear Warren, I never heard you play but I miss your music and words so much.
Truly. Even down to WZ writing a song called "Genius" ("He was makin' out like Charlie Sheen/He was a genius")...
leslie! you ain't kiddin!
"I can make love disappear/For my next trick I'll need a volunteer..." Wouldn't you die happy to have written that?
I can't get enough of this tune! heard it for first time 3 weeks ago. Always like Zevon and saw in Buffalo NY in 1994. I am just really discovering alot more of his stuff. WOW!!
Warren is the best wordsmith of all time.
