Zevon, Warren - Don't Let Us Get Sick Lyrics

Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight

The sky was on fire
When I walked to the mill
To take up the slack in the line
I thought of my friends
And the troubles they've had
To keep me from thinking of mine

Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight

The moon has a face
And it smiles on the lake
And causes the ripples in Time
I'm lucky to be here
With someone I like
Who maketh my spirit to shine

Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight

    "- Hey Mom!
    - Grace...
    - You ok? You look unhappy.
    - No! Just... nothing.
    - What?
    - I don't know. I don't like when people do bad things
    - What people?
    - Clients.
    - You know everyone's bad in some way.
    - I was bad today...
    - No Mom, you were'nt, you can't be.
    - Why? Why can't I be?
    - Because you're the best person I know!

  18. K.... F....

    Long live Californication :)

  19. L.... I....

I love this song, I just wish I didn't relate to it so much now that I'm old, sick, and I'm told that I am stupid because I feel compassion for people I've never met. I've been told 4 times just this week that I'm a "libtard" and I should kill myself. I have a disease that is causing me a slow painful death, I'm just stubborn enough that I'm going to hang on long enough to see trump removed from office. I'm sure one of his ball-suckers will respond to this by telling me to kill myself. At least come up with something original!

    L.... I....

God bless hope you get passed whatever you're going through

    L.... I....

When they call you a "libtard", just try to have some compassion for them. You can see. They can't.

    L.... I....

I've learned to feel compassion for others here lately. It's not a bad thing by any means. It's actually one of the best qualities a human can have. Be strong.

I get irritated if just one person doesn't like Warren's songs and on the other hand I feel so pleased with myself that I get it,it wasn't for the masses and there's no fix for stupid.

  22. s.... ....

"Here because *vapid media*" has to be one of the worst trends lately.

  23. G.... T....

I played this song when my golden retriever passed away..good old times we had. Got him when he was just 8 weeks old. I don't worry. I'll see him in heaven when I'm a old man not afraid of death anymore

Amazing that someone who wrote so many dark, sardonic songs also wrote one of the most elegantly beautiful songs ever done. A monstrous, complex talent. Listen often and share the word.

Kat Harper here, in spite of the name listed by my icon. So much has changed in my life since my Aug. 15 comment. But my deep love and reverence for Warren and his music-- perhaps my only constant--still burns just as brightly. This song, his humble plea for us to be blessed with the simple things in life, is all the more fitting at this time of year. Warren would never have said "Peace on earth, goodwill toward men", because, above all, Warren Zevon was a realist. And as such, he would have felt such a wish was a waste of precious breath. Rather, he prayed for the sweet, simple things. Because you wished for the real things for me, Warren, I wish the same for you. Not " Rest in peace", but instead, "Rock the pillars of heaven, Mr. Bad Example! I'll be seeing you soon! "

    B.... ....

@TristanandIsolt You are most definitely welcome! And, against all odds-- and medical predictions--I'm still here....still enjoying every sandwich to the very last crumb, and always deeply pleased to find another fan of Warren's. He is still as amazing as he ever was, isn't he? His music still as inspiring, his words still as pertinent as ever. Warren is an Absolute...they didn't break the mould when they made him; like Minerva from the forehead of Jupiter, Warren erupted, dazzlingly brilliant and utterly unique, from the very Fabric of Life itself. Irreplaceable....

    B.... ....

Hey Kat. So glad you are still with us. I miss Warren, but fortunately I did see him at First Avenue in Mpls and I think it wasn't that long before his death. First time I heard the song Don't let us get sick IIRC. I wish I had gotten to know Warren the Man, but never had a chance to hang out with him. Still I miss the man, but so happy we all have so many amazing songs to remember him by.

    B.... ....

TristanandIsolt Life is such an incredible ride! I never got to see Warren perform, but I met him...the most beautiful serendipity I have ever known. I live in So. Florida, and years ago, I was shopping at The Falls...heading for a strip mall, it started raining, so I dodged into a Borders Bookstore to stay dry. I found a book I couldn't live without, and came around another stack, and saw this guy with his back to me. Sorry....I stopped in my tracks, admiring his incredible butt, and the long blonde ponytail, running down the middle of his back like solid sunshine. I ogled a moment, then started to move past...and he.turned profile to me. Oh ye gods alive! It was Warren! I was utterly flabbergasted. My brain told me this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I approached him quietly and said, "Excuse me, Mr. Zevon. My name's Kat Thibidoux. I'm a fan and I just wanted to tell you how much I love your music." He smiled, said, "It's Warren, and thank you. " I started to leave... didn't want to seem weird, and he said, "What's that book you have?" I still have it. It was Rod McKuen. "Stanyan Street And Other Sorrows" Poetry. He generously talked with me for a nano second, it seemed, tho it was actually the better part of an hour. He said he liked my Cajun patois...liked the way I talk. A couple recognised him and came up, so I excused myself. From behind me...that wonderful voice:"Thanks, Kat. I enjoyed this."

That plays thru my mind sometimes..who am I kidding? It plays alot. I drive past there...the Borders closed long ago...I couldn't begin to say what's there now...I envy you seeing Warren perform...there can't have been anything like sharing oxygen with The Mutineer himself. It would have been magical. But I remember how his hand felt when he shook mine... strong, warm, rough...it wasn't until I read Crystal's book that I learned about the handwashing thing he had. And twice he flashed that amazing grin...made my knees weak. Oh, yeah...Life is pretty amazing...and the best, I believe, is just over the horizon, where Warren, Bowie, Glenn Frey and others jam. They're frozen at the Eternal Pinnacle of their talent...Forever young, forever gifted....Forever. I think of that....and I'm not so afraid. Enjoy every sandwich. Kat

    B.... ....

That's a cool experience. Extremely cool. They have an incident similar to that in the very first episode of Californication. Do you watch that show. It's a great show and they revere Warren.

    B.... ....

@TristanandIsolt Sad to say, I've never seen a single episode. But the mantra, "Whisky, weed and Warren Zevon" has become very well-known. My husband, Brody, ( we were married on Warren's birthday this year...my promise kept. I'd promised I'd marry him if I made it a year past my diagnosis) and I used to travel alot. Again, no time for TV. But I'm getting weaker and wimpier all the time, now...at 4'11" I weigh 84 lbs, I'm pretty much bed bound. Hate it! I love being active...but now I know a little of what Warren soldiered thru his last days...and my admiration for his strength and courage is boundless. As a professor of English...or used to be...you'd think I'd have the words to describe Warren's bravery.
    ..... But I don't....Kat

  43. J.... S....

I came here because I like Warren Zevon....?

    J.... S....

    EXACTLY! ^_^...AMEN!

    J.... S....

Not many of 'Us' ..... :/

    J.... S....

@Dazza G There are more of us Zevonites than you'd think. Warren's Legend is Eternal...he is that perfect rarity: an Absolute. Absolutely brilliant; absolutely gifted; human; talented; Irreplaceable; unique...the list could fill a Webster's Unabridged. Stephen King, Warren's good friend and no mean wordsmith himself once said of the chorus to this song: "If I could write words like that, I could die a happy man." Well said, Mr. King. Well said, indeed.

    J.... S....

    @Kat Harper
    gorgeously said!!!

    P.... T....

Sure is , it shows we are human

  47. K.... H....

Ye god's! Is this elegant song not a righteous prayer for our times? For any time? Warren's poetry set to song is a genuinely humble man's hopes for the world I believe he knew he would be leaving all too soon. What a soulful, selfless gift it was, is, and shall ever be! No words are thanks enough, Warren. You "maketh my spirit to shine."

  48. P.... W....

This song delights my heart. Rest in peace, Warren.

Such wonderful memories of this man and his talent; the music from my young, carefree
days, to the sad day I learned he had been diagnosed with cancer. How very simple he
tells us of love and things that await fo all mortals.
