Zappa, Frank - Strictly Genteel Lyrics

[Theodore Bikel:]
This, as you might have guessed, is the end of the movie. The entire cast is assembled here at the Centerville Recreational Facility to bid farewell to you, and to express thanks for your attendance at this theater. This might seem old fashioned to some of you, but I'd like to join in on this song. It's the kind of a sentimental song that you get at the end of a movie, it's the kind of a song that people might sing to let you in the audience know that we really like you and care about you, yeah . . . Understand how hard it is to laugh these days, with all the terrible problems in the world!

Lord, have mercy on the people in England
For the terrible food these people must eat
(Errrr . . . excuse me)
And may the Lord have mercy on the fate of this movie
And God bless the mind of the man in the street

Help all the rednecks and the flatfoot policemen
Through the terrible functions they all must perform
God help the winos, the junkies, and the weirdos
And every poor soul who's adrift in the storm.

Help everybody, so they all get some action
Some love on the weekend, some real satisfaction

[Phyllis Bryn-Julson:]
A room and a meal
And a garbage disposal
A lawn and a hose'll
Be strictly genteel

Reach out your hand to the girl in the dog book
The girl in the pig book, and the one with the horse
Make sure they keep all those businessmen happy
And the purple-lipped censors and the Germans of course

Help everybody, so they all get some action
Some love on the weekend, some real satisfaction

A Swedish apparatus
With a hood and a bludgeon
With a microwave oven
"Honey, how do it feel?"

Lord, have mercy on the hippies and faggots
And the dykes and the weird little children they grow

Help the black man
Help the poor man
Help the milk man
Help the door man
Help the lonely, neglected old farts that I know

[Theodore Bikel:]
It's been swell havin' you with us tonight, folks!

[Mark:]
But, don't leave the theater yet, 'cause there's still more to come, but before we go on, I want to introduce to you my friend and musical associate, Howard Kaylan, who's going to give us all a final closing benediction

    4.00minutes sublime

  2. h.... ....

    This isn't all the versions.
It's a nice idea but they all end up cancelling each other out.
Also, a lot of the Closed Caption words are wrong.

    h.... ....

... I suppose you're thinking of phase cancellation, but rest assured they don't "cancel each other out" because they're not same wave forms. They're mixed and eq'd from the 1 cd and 3 codec compressed processed mixes, not stems or tracks, as sound sources. The captions in English are correct, a friend provided the Hungarian translation, the others i did my best. The notations i wrote acknowledge they're not "all" the versions. Let me go 10 years back in time and fix that for you. Thanks for listening !

    h.... ....

@boomaga No, not phase cancellation. Are you nuts? Who said anything about stems? Each version has its own unique arrangement that stands by itself but gets nullified when bombarded with the others. They lose their impact. Your lyrics are incorrect in many places, your friend with the Hungarian translation is wrong, most likely because English isn't their main language. All you need to do is look at the mouths of the singers to see that.

    h.... ....

@horowizard this js fun. Yeah, I'm a little nuts, i got a bachelor degree in audio engineering while the independent studio system collapsed. The Hungarian translator's native language is Hungarian. So, I took him at his word when he volunteered the lyrics. The audio for the singing parts that sync with the movie are taken from the movie and the OST. As far as chorus members singing other things, well, look around, clearly not everyone even in the orchestra was on the same page. The trumpet section were drunk, he recalled. As described in the description, i ripped them up measure by measure and resyncd them in particular using singers lip movements as there were no other visual cues. As for the aesthetic objection, it's fine, it's not entirely successful, it was to see if it could be done, not to improve it, something Frank himself couldn't stop himself doing later in his career with pretty shitty results (Lumpy Money). If you think the net effect was subtractive instead of additive, you definitely won't like my next project which is to sync all Charles Ives pieces to play simultaneously (when i say all, i mean 4 of them, which themselves are comprised of disparate things played together). Thank you for being a friend !

    h.... ....

@boomaga I'm going on my 49th year in the professional Recording business. This is not a craft that is learned in school. It is an apprentice / mentor relationship. The most dangerous and damaging are the YouTube tutorials. The Trumpet section on the LSO II recordings was definitely drunk but he did release the performance to prove a point. I'm not sure what you are talking about when you say Frank couldn't stop doing later in his career, then mention Lumpy Money which was material from his 1967 - 1968 period. I don't know how or why you would sync Charles Ives pieces. There are more than 4 works in his extensive catalog of compositions and relatively few recorded performances of his Symphonies.

    h.... ....

@horowizard I'll let the Recording Industry department at the university know they're going about this all wrong. Sure mentorship is important, I'm grateful for my mentors and they're grateful for their Grammys. Personality wise, I'm not sure if I'd have thrived apprenticing to one single overbearing prick. I don't know anything about dangerous and damaging YouTube tutorials. That's someone else's axe to grind.
I was thinking of when Frank added new bass and drums to old tracks and it really ruined them. ... What else ? Oh, the Charles Ives was a joke, you know, mashups and all. I'm sorry it didn't land.
Fun pissing contest but I'm surprised I'm getting YT comments trolled, I should know better. Guess I'm just bored. Congrats on entering your 49th year of etc. ! If only we'd met ten years ago, that's one whole decade ago, when I made this, you could've dissuaded me ... My best to your padawan.

The magnificence of our beloved Frank.

  12. B.... ....

I was hoping the vocals wern't buried....

    B.... ....

but you did bury the vocals...

    B.... ....

@BopsStudios I was laying four completed and mastered mixes on top of each other, two of which did not have vocals. I didn't have access to the stems or individual tracks. But here's your money back, anyway, sorry it didn't meet your expectations... $$$$

    B.... ....

    @boomaga all good thanks

  13. N.... B....

    Amazing.

  14. A.... C....

Very cleverly done.I wish that the whole soundtrack could be tweezed.

  15. R.... F....

200 Motels is now available on DVD at Walmart of all places. You have to order online. My cost was about $21.00 with shipping.
Slightly grainy when viewed on a big screen but good sound quality. No subtitles or captions.

  16. A.... V....

Grotesque, sublime and epic: we love you Frank.

  17. t.... ....

The National Anthem for a sane world.

  18. K.... G....

Ich liebe die Musik von FRANK ZAPPA

  19. K.... ....

He was the level headed Sheriff in The Defiant Ones. He was the guy humiliated by Whitman in Sands of the Kalahari. Bikel could act.

  20. M.... ....

Great great song, great job editing this, thank you!

  21. t.... ....

    Zappa's prayer to us all.

Where is the close-up of Pamela des Barres? I know I've seen it in one version. Not a close-up, but closer than we see in this version?

  23. G.... F....

A beautiful piece of work. Thank you.

  24. R.... S....

Hey, boomaga! This was a really great audio mix you put together. Thanks, brother.

  25. R.... S....

Amazing how a composer who did not believe in any gods recorded moments of such sublime communion with The Cosmos.

  26. c.... ....

This song is more relevant now than ever. Zappa would be stoned in the street as a heretic by the 'PC' mob for these lyrics.

    c.... ....

The PC mob would be more stoned.

  27. d.... ....

The soprano is amazing. Check out "Nun Suit Painted on some Old Boxes" from the same movie.

  28. t.... ....

    this is fantastic work.

  29. M.... ....

i liked this but you should have included the closing benediction from Howard lol.

  34. M.... V....

    who's here the frogman ??

  35. N.... B....

Thank you for your hard work on this. Beuatiful.

  36. D.... ....

Nice mixing job. Been trying to lift the Flo and Eddie vocal parts for a vibes version, plus other little sneaky percussion parts which sound clearer in this version. Never actually heard the glockenspiel part during the "and may the lord have mercy" bit as clear as this before. Thanks! This version is a percussionist's delight.

  37. J.... W....

would be great if the whole movie was done with this way

  38. T.... T....

Absolutely wonderful - music and film.

    T.... T....

I think I was right when I heard - and commented - this some 8 months ago. What a fantastic piece of music.

  39. F.... ....

Keith Moon, Ringo Starr and Aynsley Dunbar in one film. And George Duke on trombone.

    F.... ....

Not to mention Jimmy Carl Black and (for a brief second or two) Ruth!!

  40. W.... M....

I love the whole movie I wish I could find it again.

    W.... M....

    It's on Amazon

  41. S.... G....

Nice video quality, none of the interlacing I remember seeing in previous versions. Great overall job in production melding these versions together!

    S.... G....

Too bad the whole film couldn't have enjoyed sound quality like this.

  42. C.... S....

Nice 'statistical density', as Frank might say. I go to pieces and say that it's up there with the greats. An unbelievable education in music in six minutes.

  43. F.... ....

    great man, thank you!

  44. A.... R....

One Of Frankie's best numbers and criminally underrated.

    A.... R....

Actually, it's pretty much not rated at all.

  45. M.... k....

why no howard kaylen final benediction?

  46. J.... T....

You couldn't use the "Orchestral Favorites" version for anything?

  47. A.... C....

    Rest easy, Mr. Bikel.

    A.... C....

  50. t.... ....

    FANTASTIC!!!

  51. M.... ....

Yo, man. one of the best versions I've heard, Frank would have patted you on the back.

  52. I.... ....

Great labour of love there! Thanks!

  53. C.... G....

this is great book only for hard core zappa fans. enjoy :)

  54. V.... ....

Excellent job on this! I don't normally like re-edits of music and film but this is awesome! Superbly Done!

  55. s.... ....

    it's a love thing.

  56. d.... ....

the bolero bit on the end of this (is it a bolero??) makes me weep like a big fat baby :')

  57. h.... ....

Where is the Harmonica from the Orchestral Favorites version? Also I'm surprised you didn't get the Trumpet Fanfare that appears after the line " .. and the one with the horse" from Make A Jazz Noise Here

  58. P.... S....

    Wonderfully re-tweezed!

  59. I.... ....

I saw them at a county fair a few years ago and got them to sign my VHS copy of 200 motels. Eddie smiled and laughed and signed it "Mothers", but Flo just kind of begrudgingly signed it "Turtles". I guess he's still upset about getting dumped by Frank after all these years.

  60. s.... ....

    Super bueno magicale

  61. F.... ....

Let's be honest, it was kind of broken. He dedicates about a page of his book to how the drunk, 400,000$ LSO couldn't play it. Plus, he has at least five different official recordings of this. He was experimenting with different instrumentations and ways of playing Strictly Genteel all the time.
I'm sure if he lived longer, he'd have recorded the definitive version sometime in the 90s as part of the hypothetical timeline where he'd have the well-deserved money, clout, and respect to do so.

  62. F.... F....

    WONDERFUL.

  63. Z.... R....

Zappateers, rise up for your national anthem! "salutes and weeps"

  64. G.... R....

This should be the internation anthem, my friend.

  65. T.... H....

Try watching 200 Motels on L.S.D. wow!

    T.... H....

Why? And it's still a WOW.

  66. E.... L....

This is fantastic. Mad props, man.

  67. F.... ....

Flo and Eddie are my personal saviors .

  68. t.... ....

So love this tune. Always have !!

  69. N.... K....

    i love you sir

  70. m.... ....

No duh, he wrote & directed 200 Motels (the movie which this is taken from).

  71. S.... ....

At 4:10, I feel how he looks.

  72. z.... ....

    great Job! thks for that

  73. s.... ....

This was fantastic! It was like a perfect trailer for the 200 Motels movie.

  74. m.... ....

I did better than that, had a nice little crying jag. Very moved.

  75. Z.... B....

    Nowhere near as productive.

  76. S.... ....

My thanks and commendation to "boomaga" for his care in assembling this mini œuvre from the major one!

  77. S.... ....

I have it on VHS and DVD and it looks better on VHS than DVD but the transfer from 35mm to VHS was very sloppy and could've been done better -- as if the engineers decided, "This just some cult crap and a joke. Let's just run it through quick because we'll have to be very careful with the real stuff like those like those late '70s, early '80s party mixes."

  78. S.... ....

The music itself is astounding but it's surprising how many people don't get it that the lyrics are tongue-in-cheek!

    S.... ....

Zappa has said on interviews that it was a prayer. Modern-day but still a prayer.

  79. B.... C....

do not understand a word you say about the making of this "film" all i know that it has turned out 100% great - nice work full marks to you ! you should get a job in the film and music game- hell they need some body how as every thing has turned out "bland "

  80. c.... s....

This really reminds me of the Art Bears, only less annoying.

  81. V.... T....

Honey, after years of delaying -- will you be my wife? And yes, of course we'll have that big church ceremony and reception! My only requirement - this HAS to be our wedding song. Oh, and your father-daughter dance must be to Uncle Remus.

    V.... T....

When I got married the groom (me) and the groomsmen walked out to Sofa#1.

  82. G.... R....

This should be the international anthem, nothing less!

  83. m.... ....

Wow the editing is so well done that i dont even notice that its different versions

by the Way this is the First time i ever heard this song and its beautiful

  84. C.... B....

    I love this!!!

  85. D.... V....

I applaud your efforts. Well done! Thanks for not forgetting Frank.

  86. D.... L....

Spectacular work. This is how it should've sounded all along.

  87. M.... F....

Absolutely amazing work, both the original composition and the post-work done by boomaga. Many thanks.

  88. B.... C....

This must be how Zappa pictured it in his head.

  89. A.... ....

Astonishing. I was damn near moved to tears.

  90. 5.... ....

As you said, the original soundtrack recording didn't sound very good, despite being well played. But this mix is incredible. The film exerpts go nicely with it too.

In a nutshell, this is really great!

  91. C.... B....

    thank you mister!

  92. M.... L....

very seriously one of the best videos i have ever seen on the internet brilliant work on the mix thank you thank you thank you

  93. r.... ....

@Jerebear57 he was a serious composer who had to show off his electric guitar skills so his music would be sold in "rock n' roll" labels, and he had to show off his ugly voice and songwriting to appear as if he had a message to sell.

In fewer words, he was a demented weirdo with strange musical tastes, he liked strange sounds he found beautiful, a truly remarkable musician and human being, wish he was still here

  94. K.... R....

    @acdcbonluver97 Hah thats great! ^_^

  95. S.... M....

@thewhitestripes13 Yep, that is Keith Moon. He plays the Hot Nun the whole movie. and ringo starr plays zappa.

  96. C.... N....

    I love you

  97. c.... ....

    Brilliant! Well done!
