Weasels is a big favourite. Wish Frank could have lingered in this phase for longer. Loved his guitar playing at this point, and Ray had a terrific voice. There was just enough great musicians to make it more than just a good rock n roll band. Add Aynsley on drums and it would have been perfect.

I remember seeing the vinyl edition in a second hand record shop and it stopping me dead in my tracks. Such an amazing image.

If more of Zappa's music was like this, I'd be ALL OVER his catalog. Unfortunately, he threw so much garbage-dogshit into the mix that it's a treacherous terrain to mine. The diamonds in the rough, however, are simply amazing.

This was recorded in 1969/70, the Lennon thing was in the mid 70's.

This was recorded in 1968 at the Festival Hall London (vocal version of "Oh no" replaced the original instrumental version at the concert).

Without a doubt, this is one of Frank's greatest.

Had the pleasure of meeting Mr Zappa backstage in Athens, GA in the early 70s. Quite the gentleman. What's so awesome about this track is the tape slice from studio "Oh No" to live OC Lumber Truck.

I always thought that Ray was the best vocalist Frank ever had- his delivery and vocal style helped make Frank's lyrics even more subversive. RIP to both great men.

"You're probably out to lunch" is a clear reference to the Dolphy's album "Out to Lunch". There's actually a lot of Dolphy's references in Weasels Ripped My Flesh, just as the "Eric Dolphy memorial Barbecue"

Even though Dolphy died (June 1964) 2 years before the release of Freak Out (June, 1966), FZ has said that he was influenced by him, and with both being from the LA area might have eventually crossed paths perhaps.

M White I would say it could be both a usage of the common phrase AND a reference to Dolphy. Zappa was in love with Dolphy's concept of jazz.

Out to lunch means crazy too,the references made in this song is a dig at John Lennon.

This song was written long before FZ met Lennon and their encounter the the Fillmore East, this song has nothing to do with Lennon.

When I hear this song, I picture a fancy dinner party, with a drunk pompous rich man talking about how he is the only person who knows the meaning of love. We then observe the jazz band playing, who continue to play nice music and then start to get experimental and get more intense. When they are done, the whole party is staring at them and the band starts laughing. Zappa at his finest!

This is the essential Zappa. So many movements and bad ass guitar solos, who could ask for more?

The mothers invented some good mother loving stuff here.

These are two of my favorite songs.  I featured the tracks on a psychedelic rock mix I did a few years ago.  Great stuff!!!

I love the Beatles' ethos of love as espoused in All You Need Is Love, but I also love Zappa's hilarious savaging of its naiviete and its borderline sanctimonious pomposity. Plus the tune and time-signatures here are mindbendingly good - inventive in the extreme, but as with the best Beatles experiments, still organic and natural-sounding, not always a feature of Zappa.

CultureJudge Yes, it would be hard to find a single leaf or bird in Zappa's music. I've always loved both the Beatles and Zappa too though.

We need to love us first.  Another person is not necessary.".....Orange County Lumber Truck=  Lumber trucks hauling fecal shaped wood (lies) from where the Lorene was generated since the mid-late 60's............  Was the frequency 750, turned up 50-100 times too high, to blanket the natural frequency of Gaia?  Duh, maybe that's why almost all the birds terminated.  Or, did they just digest too much Dickweed and die gagging and laughing ?   Love, mox.  P.S.
