Zappa, Frank - How Could I Be Such A Fool? Lyrics

When I won your love
I was very glad
Every happiness in the world
Belonged to me
Then our love was lost
And you went away
Now I shed my tears
In lonely misery

I know now that you never ever
Really loved me
It hurts me now to think you never ever
Really cared
I sit and ask myself a thousand times
To try and find
What really happened
To the love
That we shared

How could I be such a fool
How could I believe
All those lies you told me
How could I be taken in
By your sweet face
You spoiled our love
You ruined my life
I'm so tore down
I'm a terrible disgrace

But there will come a time
And you'll regret the way
You treated me
As if I was a fool
And didn't know
The many times you lied
About your love for me
Someone else is gonna know
That your love was just a show

How could I be such a fool
How could I believe
All those lies you told me
How could I be taken in
By your sweet face
You spoiled our love
You ruined my life
I'm so tore down
I'm a terrible disgrace

But there will come a time
And you'll regret the way
You treated me
As if I was a fool
And didn't know
The many times you lied
About your love for me
Someone else is gonna know
That your love was just a show

How could I be such a fool?

Despite Zappa who was underappreciated during his lifetime, he was one heckuva composer and was not afraid to voice his opinions to the public. There will never be another one like him.

    Carolyn Zaremba

He wasn't underappreciated during his lifetime. He was a known genius.

  5. Rui Tavares

What a great song this one is.

Heard this life in colone long time ago. Thank you Mr. Zappa!

    Don Robinson

Is that Brut Co-log-nay? (The Blue Light final lines)

  8. Mama Clack

Love songs are total bullshit. My fav bands are the ones that don't write bullshit love songs. Zappas good but not the greatest ever or anything.

    Alex Hicks

This is a love song parody. Zappa hated love songs, too.

    QuangThichDuc

    Not the greatest ever? Bullshit.

    Christian Cristof

It's ok, someday you'll get out of you edgy phase.

  9. Liliane Beeckman

    😨😭

  10. Phil mole

In the process right now of overcoming of lifetime of unfounded prejudice toward Zappa. I always assumed he as an an unmusical goofus who was more of a provocateur than an artist. Wow, was I ever wrong. Better late than never though. The good news is that it looks like I have a lot of listening to do.

    John Rodriguez

SAME I was always more fond of beefheart and it provided so much unwarranted bias lmao

  11. Michael Lantz

Did you know that Frank knew how to conduct an orchestra?Frank Zappa came back to Baltimore, Maryland for a visit (That was where both of us were born) back in the late 1980's and David Zinman who was a Conductor of The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the time handed the baton over to Frank Zappa and let him conduct the Orchestra.I would say Frank was on top of his game.

    Carolyn Zaremba

Of course! He composed many pieces for orchestra. I thought everybody knew that.

  12. Erwin Woodedge

    Hell yes!

  13. melvin shermen

All the sjw in the nutshell

    John Rodriguez

    melvin shermen incel anthem

  14. Kidd Oldman

    Robert Ommundsen

because it was not a single?it cant happen here was.strange?

    x yz

    Because no-one bought it.

    Robert Ommundsen

@x yz it was not a single.

  15. colinmcom14

The chorus sounds like the song The Edge by David McCallum

    Thomas

Don't you mean that The Edge by Dave McCallum sounds like the chorus in this song?

  16. procious

what can I say. Zappa, historically great.

  17. Stefano Strada

    Mmmmuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaahhhhh!!!!!! EPICO !!!!!!!!! :)

  18. villaparis2

Someone else is going to know that your love was just a show

    1966:
I play "Who Are the Brain Police," off this same LP, for my mother, and she is almost nauseated;  I play this cut, and she is totally enthralled.
Incidentally, FZ rearranged, actually re-imagined, this little pop masterpiece scarcely two years later, on another prophetic, brilliant LP, and you can find that here:

I think many people often forget that Frank Zappa was not only a seasoned 20th century composer but he could also write a damn catchy pop song.

    Skizzo Frenetik

+Rowan Carlyle then u need to hear moar music

    crescentfreshbret

What you said is very true, but to the best of my knowledge, Ray Collins wrote this song.

    Jake Fettes

Ray Collins I'm sure wrote tge lyrics but I'm certain Zapoa was the one who arranged the instrumentation

    Michel Hebert

    No. It's all Frank.

    nedped

Not so. The one songwriting credit for Collins (shared with Zappa) on the Freak Out album is for "Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder."  Collins wrote songs that were on "Cruisin' With Ruben and the Jets," an album that includes another splendid version of How Could I Be Such a Fool?

  21. Alan C

If I ever get married again, I'm playing this at our wedding. Maybe the song that the new b&g dance to at the reception after everyone is really toasted.

    Frick

Alan C what a stupid idea, feel embarrassed.

    vaguelyhuman

    ...it's a breakup song tho

    William L.

if you want your new wife to be mortified, then by all means, play this in front of the entire wedding assemblage

  22. Thomas Payne

    Genius.

  23. Bruce Stoller

Along with a few other artists in 1968 - Mr. Zappa's work was in my ears-
Love the trumpet as well as how different beats get emphasized at each chorus-
    r.i.p. Frank-

    This was released in 1966
