Zappa, Frank - Florentine Pogen Lyrics

[includes a quote from Louie Louie (Richard Berry)]

Ah-oh-oh-oh ah-oh-oh-oh ah-oh-oh-oh oh-oh

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Yow-ooh
Yow-yoo-yow
La-la la-la la-la la-la
Ba-la ba-la na-la

She was the daughter of a wealthy
Florentine Pogen
(You-ooh)
Read 'em 'n weep
Was here adjustable slogan
(Ah-ah-ah-ah-ahh)

She was a debutante daisy
With a color-note organ
Deep in the street
She drove a '59 Morgan

WOO-LAH!

That's the kinda step she takes
When her hot breaks hot brakes
That's the kinda sound she makes
(ooh, let go uh me)
When her crab cakes
(Arf arf arf)

She didn't like it when her fan belt
Shrunk & got shorter
(Ointment)
Battery leaks could nearly cost her a quarter

She didn't want to go home
An' watch the pestle go mortar
Later she speaks
On how Perellis might court her

Na-na-na, na-na-noo
Na-na-na, yah-ah-hoo
Na-na-na, na-na-noo
Na-na-na, yah-ah-hoo

She was the daughter
Ah-ah-ahhh
Of a wealthy
Florentine Pogen
Po-oh-wo-oh-oh
Po-oh-wo-oh-oh
Po-oh-wo-oh-oh
Ga-ya-ee-annnn

Read 'em 'n weep
Read 'em 'n weep
(Take a booger home with you to)
Read 'em 'n weep

Ay-ay-ay-ay-ay-ay
Ah-ooh-ah-ooh-ah-ooh-ah-HAH
Ah-ooh-ah-ooh-ah-ooh-ah-HAH

Chester's go-rilla
She go oink
Chester's go-rilla
She go quack
Chester's go-rilla
She go moo
Chester's go-rilla
She go
Hratche-plche
Hratche-plche

I'm a prog fan, and I've NEVER heard synths like the passage at 4:04 and throughout this whole album. I can't wait to explore Frank Zappa for the first time!

As much as I love prog too, Zappa's material tends to leave Yes, King Crimson, et. al. in the dust. He was a prolific writer, guitarist and employed the best of the best. No one else compares to his output/catalogue...

    T.... ....

Crimson and Zappa shared at least 2 musicians in common; Jobson and Belew...Chester Thompson played with Genesis and One of Frank’s drummers was in the band UK. Keff Berlin who Zappa used much later...was a Brit Prog maven who played with Bruford, etc.
If Zappa left prog in the dust he had to have prog players to do it...

  29. L.... A....

Frank , Mr Frank Zappa thought us without -stiff!

  30. I.... ....

Rip George Duke, you will be missed

  31. p.... ....

Frank wouldnt use a videoserver to hear a song without seeing it. He would use Spotify or download the song :)
But oke, 5 years later I realize this is a battle lost, people keep playlisst on youtube for their music (not for video).

  32. .... L....

Of course it was - he even talks about it in his book the Real Frank Zappa Book.

  33. z.... ....

I can't believe you're cool enough to be looking up zappa and lame enough to say something like that

  34. L.... G....

Does anyone think that one of his influences was Spike Jones?

    L.... G....

I've often wondered. But once you listen to Varese, you realize that Jones probably was influenced by Varese as much as Frank was.

    L.... G....

Larry Gregersen:He says as much in the Real FZ Book.

  35. j.... b....

Great drumming by Chester Thompson. That 73 to 76 Mothers was the most musically cohesive line-up he ever had. Set some great standards now unfortunatly obscured by all the symphony rock that was going on at the same time.

  36. T.... U....

    Florence boy.

  37. T.... ....

Frank Zappa is so inspirational and amazing to me as a fellow musician. I'm a young and up-and-coming guitarist/singer from Connecticut. Check out my newest video on my Youtube page, Blues Jams, and I promise, I swear, you will NOT be disappointed. I hope I can be the generation of music that brings back real talent. PLEASE help me, yes I'm desperate for an audience, but I'm NOT a fake. I play rock and blues, and I'm ready for my shot. Good people of Youtube, help me out! <3

  38. j.... ....

Me too. My first summer in So Cal back in 81. My buddy was a Zappa fan, thank God. 20 yrs old, not a care in the world...shroom'n with Zappa!

  39. R.... P....

Great tunes and cool album cover.

    Thanks You tube/Zappa/Friends

  41. k.... ....

that last few seconds of the song just blows my mind..u could make that into a whole new song.

  42. T.... ....

Top-notch production! Does Chester’s drum set ever sound amazing?!? :^D

  43. C.... ....

its not. many older artists are an inspiration to modern musicians.

  44. a.... ....

Wow! All these years of music, and still nobody makes it like Frank.

  45. C.... ....

i have a weird feeling that groove armada ripped parts of this song and placed them into theirs. check groove armada - at the river.

    xD

  46. 6.... ....

Weezles ripped my Flesh and Live at The Filmore were my two first albums. Like to find them now.

  47. 6.... ....

Brings back amazing memories. RIP FZ

  48. n.... ....

I believe that apostrophe (') came out just after Xmas of 1973 and then Roxy was released in Sept 1974 so they were the two Frank albums getting play that fall. They also were touring during that time frame. It was a great time to be alive.

  49. f.... ....

    iu...your sister is really...xO

  50. P.... ....

    Dreamworthy, quite dreamworthy.=|)

  51. f.... ....

I first got hooked on frank when I first heard apostraphe in 74,actually i do recall hearing roxy maybe a month after. Were they released about the same time frame?????Anyone know???

  52. D.... ....

This was the first Zappa album I bought in 75-76 Hooked ever since! Luv It he was a Genius!

  53. k.... ....

Anyway the Wind Blows (Frank Live in Paris) has the best version of this song I've heard.

  54. u.... ....

OH NO!!! SOMEBODY IS USING CAPS!!! WHAT NONSENSE!!!

And...help, help! I can't find any videos on youtube! Duh, where did all the videos go?

But seriously, naive pseudo-intellectuals, the only real issue here is: How does the Zappa Family Trust feel about having its recordings posted? My guess is that they're not overly enthusiastic about it. But, again, at least more people will get to appreciate Frank Zappa's superb music, and that can't be all bad.

    Get a life! See ya.

  55. p.... ....

So you suggest that it would only be me, who visits youtube to find and watch nice videos or live footage with good music. You're saying, that was not the original youtube plan? I would rephrase myself if I were you. Talking nonsense with CAPS never made a strong impression.

  56. p.... ....

Oke smart guys, now search any video. More and more you will find that the search results are spoiled by finding non videos. It will end up being impossible to find a video, because most of it is audio. Just because of your stubborn stupid abuse of IT resources. Come with something nice and people will always fuck it up. And there is no need at all, all music is downloadable in multiple ways. Needless to say, this song rocks.

  57. u.... ....

Ha ha ha. What a pathetically pseudo-intellectual comment. Why not use a video server to deliver just music? So what? You don't like it? MOVE ON... It downloads smoothly, good folks (some of which may never have appreciated Zappa) get to enjoy a superb song...and the cover looks cool, too.

Wait a secong. Huh? What? Oh noooo!!! This musical post isn't "contributing to the function of" some dummy's singular quest for video, video, VIDEO!!! Oh NOOOOO!!!!! What a world!!!!

  58. J.... A....

thank you so much for uploading this, im so pleased there is still a strong fan base and community for zappa after all the years. a true genius in music. thanks man ;)

  59. H.... S....

Good! Couldja post a "video" of Zappa's "Advance Romance"? I love the album Bongo Fury, and Denny Walley's slide guitar work on that cut is perhaps the greatest slide solo in the history of rock-n-roll! Thanx!

  60. p.... ....

Don't make me register complaints about your offensive language. Wether you like it or not, my point is true. Posting nonvideo on a videoserver spoils the function of the videoserver. If that's your ultimate goal or not, I dont mind, but I've stated the fact. Those that can understand it, will understand it.

  61. p.... ....

Ive seen Baby Snakes. And there is no doubt about Zappa's music. However using a videoserver for just music is not smart, not contributing to the function of sharing, seeking, finding video!

  62. H.... S....

Perhaps there are people like myself who do not have this album anymore and appreciate the studio version...fuck a video! Zappa didn't make many cinematic shorts because there wasn't video back in the day, just film! You wanna look at Baby Snakes for three hours, be my guest!

  63. p.... ....

This can never be intended for this great videoserver. Uploading non-video is simply the wrong kind of Youtube use. No matter how good or bad your intentions are, you are making it harder to find video, and that's what Youtube should be good at.

  64. p.... ....

In respond to your private mail stating I should keep my negative comments: Hey wake up, its comments, not all comments are positive. Negative comments should make you think!
Youtube is a videoserver. A great place to seek and find videos of your favorite artist. But more and more people place nonvideos, just music. The result is: when looking for zappa videos, the search results show more and more non-videos, making it harder to find real videos.

  65. p.... ....

No video, just music, which we can get from anywhere. Adding this, spoils search results looking for zappa videos.
