Youngbloods, The - Darkness, Darkness Lyrics
Darkness, darkness
Be my pillow
Take my hand
And let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow
Darkness, darkness
Hide my yearning
For the things I cannot be
Keep my mind from constant turning
Toward the things I cannot see now
Things I cannot see now
Things I cannot see
Darkness, darkness
Ease the day that brings me pain
I have felt the edge of sadness
I have known the depth of fear
Darkness, darkness, be my blanket
Cover me with the endless night
Take away, take away the pain of knowing
Fill the emptiness of right now
Emptiness of right now, now, now
Emptiness of right now
Darkness, darkness, be my pillow
Take my hand, and let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow
In the silence, the silence of your deep
Darkness, darkness, be my blanket
Cover me with the endless night
Take away, take away the pain of knowing
Fill the emptiness of right now
Emptiness of right now now now
Emptiness of right...
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Emptiness, emptiness
Oh yeah

Masterpiece.
I have seen the darkness Vietnam nuff said
I Love this song
This is Marin's tune. We sang a J.C.Y. tune at our Ross School, CA 1971 graduation at the Art & Garden Center! * Cav *
I found this song 6 months ago, i am obsessed now
I was fortunate to have met Jesse and made some ‘Songbird’ t shirts for the whole Youngblood’s family.
And of course saw them play a few times.
❤️always❤️
Escaping the heaviness at the end of the 60’s in 1971 in Captain Cook, Hawaii. I’d become weary of the sadness of war and heavy drugs. I happened to meet a fellow traveler beginning a small coffee plantation who generously offered modest shelter. Much like this song, that memory is what has kept me focused on kindness and understanding towards those who are suffering.
What a great song. Heavy vibes, ma'aaan.
This song sent to me by an ol' Hippie friend from "back in the day". I'm stunned I never heard this song before....glad I got to hear it now.
This is a very dark song! I think Jesse is asking for the ending of life? For himself? Darkness darkness?
An anthem for that time. I was 24 mediating in an abandoned copper mine. I went from darkness to light. But many of my generation took the darkness. They destroyed the soul of California. They will have to atone.
That's amazing I got a hold of this album about 1972 I think! But it was another musician having a spiritual experience! Like George Harrison Eric Clapton even Bob Dylan! I heard he was living in a van going to become a Hari Krishna but became great Christian! That's speculation on my part? America you could weigh in! I'm 64 from San Francisco! I was nine when I saw Carlos Santana in Hayward in 1966! I was fortunate enough to meet sal Valentino the Beau brummels! San Francisco was on fire with music! Hello Grace slick! We love you I hope you're still painting! You and Joni Mitchell!
just heard this song for first time on a episode of This Is Us .
this speaks to my damaged soul
Jessie Colin Young brings back a lot of great memories.
✌️😌✌️👍👍🌈
Thank you!!!!
This is Us S03E04
When my husband went to Vietnam in 1970 he heard this song playing when he landed. Its haunted him ever since.
To be played at my funeral.
Saw a film in high school about the danger of injecting drugs .This song was on the sound track.Thought it fit the subject.
My favorite Youngbloods song. Darkness Darkness is also one my favorite songs of all time.
I was only six.
Graduated in 1969 and then at 19 this came on KRLA 1110am radio. Lived in Glendora, CA at the time. My most favorite song, along with Sunlight.

the best song ever for me
e
I am 48 when I hear this song for the first time. Love it and the comments from those who heard it early on. Thank you for sharing. Carson stopped them from playing on the Tonight Show. Apparently, they didn't want to do one of their non commercialy known songs. Carson didn't want that. That's how I found out about them.
i bow before U..much appreciation and ♥
Jack the Bear brought me here
Another great song from Vietnam era
Eddie ottenstein rip my old friend
I think I'm the only one here because of James Cameron's Titanic documentary "Ghosts of the Abyss".
They were incredible. Jerry was my favorite but they still killed it after he left.
It's almost midnight on a Friday night, this is the perfect song now but it was Perfect 51 years ago when I was 15. We sure had a aray of music, and Woodstock that year.....still meaningful today....xoxo
Love this song xoxo
And thus "DEATH METAL" was born.
En muista koskaan kuulleeni tätä kappaletta. Eilen soitettiin Suomen radiossa ja pistin sen merkille hienona kappaleena paljolti vokalistin ansiosta.
The Man has worked hard ever since to enduce passivity. Unfortunately,
they have been far more effective at it than our generation was at
establishing peace, love, compassion, and understanding. Yet, I still
hope, and work in small ways to bring those higher qualities into
practice.
Back when music was awesome!
The year I left Ohio for LA.
Still a wonderful wonderful recording and song... several good covers are around, like Robert Plant
So glad to be alive in the 60's in L.A.
Thanks for the upload my friend.. I have always loved this since I first heard it as a little kid
This song stills so powerful
I saw them many times at Provo Park in Berkeley
Cool song
Nice touch with the record player, but I was anticipating something different, as I would have liked to have heard the hiss and crackle from the actual record. Then again, I suppose I could go play it on my own record player...
This is us!
Just playing this after a long time away from the band. I'm re-blown away by the passion of Jesse Colin Young's vocals. This is "Rockin' Blues" at it's best.
very cool...great sound ..nice product
That's why I was sad when members left a band same soup with something missing But then again new soup for you unless no soup for you
Yes back then bands were kinda like a soup , different artists moved around like gypsies

I was 9yrs old in 1969. I've loved this song from the moment I heard it nearly 50 yrs ago.
Same age but just heard it today...why did I not hear this before, should be in the classic rock pantheon
Lyndsey Buckingham must have been influenced by this masterpiece.

Me as well Jim ..can’t get enough of either 😉
I see all your bullshit comments here, my kindred souls, but the Republicans behind Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are taking away our last freedoms. Get your asses out and VOTE! The Darkness, Darkness is the Republican party.
https://youtu.be/uzFongNGuQM
Yeah, they are the ones telling you what to say and how to say it, right? You've been listening to Quotationers from Chairman Mao for far too long. (Before you get any higher on your horse, I was there my friend and I saw what they did. And they weren't republicans.)
That is some wonderful electric guitar from 2;20.does anyone know who that was?
Lowell Levinger aka Banana. Great musician. Still doing solo stuff. Check it out.

Mesmorizing.
Sounds like "Take my head and let me sleep", not "hand". And "I have found the edge of sadness", not "felt".
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 75yo Aussie fan.

Songwriters: Jesse Colin Jason Younger
Heading back to Vietnam for my second tour when this came out. The title says it all.
I just came across your comment now Chuck. Like 9 months later. Holy shit I can't imagine. You have a big set of balls man. Respect.
This was the first group I ever saw and they were playing at the Travelodge Theatre in Phoenix during 1970. I was about 15 feet away from Jessie Colon Young as he sang this song and was totally blown away. I still am. Little did I realize that my seat was the best I'd ever have at a concert.
What a great story, thank you for sharing that. I once saw Bob Seger in a high school gym, so it's fun to look back.
Interesting discovery: Young was fed up with "Get Together" which ended with the words "Right Now". The recorded version of this song, "Darkness, Darkness" ended with the words "The emptiness of right now." I didn't know that "Darkness, Darkness" was also a response to a friend getting killed in that tragic war. It makes even more sense now...perhaps he was disillusioned with the "summer of love" anthem in the context of terrible evil. BTW, I think the original studio recording of "Darkness, Darkness" by the Youngbloods was a masterpiece.
I also lived in the Haight, late 60's. Music was everywhere, great music. People that weren't there think the Dead, but there was soooo much more going on. Of course when word got out, a different breed of people showed up and things changed...moved to the country. But in the beginning, wow ! I feel so blessed to have been there at the right time....
You really have to hear on something else than a phone
Memory Lane Avalon Ballroom San Fran great show
Epic guitar break.
"Take my pillow, let me sleep"
this original killer version is the REAL DEAL! The rest are knockoffs'!
What a great song. I haven't heard this track since the early 70's. Brings back memories.
A song that had deep meaning to solders coming back from the nam. Darkness was escape. Men who hunt men, and are hunted.
First band I ever saw in concert. Had great seats and was only about 15 away from Jessie Colin Young. 45 years later I can still see it in my mind.
They called me jailbait then✌
Haven’t heard this since high school in 69.
Charlie Daniels on Violin Inspired by the Devil's Tramping Ground just up the street from Goldston, NC, his home town.
I was 17 years old when this music came in, now I am 69 years and most of my friends are gone I feel so nostalgic when I hear this music.
I still LOVE this Masterpiece +++++++++++++++

Great song
Honest to all that is holy..."our" generation was, is the best! Sure there were some truly off the walls folks (Mansons) but nothing like today IMO...this is a great example The Youngbloods gave us. Thanks to jimmytheferret for this!
Which album has this song?
Elephant Mountain
Reminds me of another underrated band...Fairport convention
Patrick Mahoney Sandy Denny was wonderful.
And Richard Thompson came out if fairport Convention he’s the British or Irish Gordon Lightfoot to me
Ditto Magnus on that one!
There were times close to self-induced death that this song went though my very being - sadness can overwhelm - but the world can be devoid of love and sense. Read Ken MacKennick on Amazon.
That is that mane tec notes well meg that backing lead duel is quite. Big very good nothin like? So far yer alone ...sory usta sing this number
