There a special riff in here that is very much like another riff in a Cars song, namely Moving in Stereo. Also I think Steve Hunter coined a similar sort of riff on a Lou Reed album about forty years ago.

So I'm thinkin hey I got that tape somewhere. Then I'm thinkin tape? What? Tape? What would I play it on? Tape is like dinosaur stuff man. Like play it on some rocks and sticks. You know? No its true. There's a little machine, right? The tape goes in there and goes on some rubber rollers and all kinds of little levers and shit. And them the tune comes out.. but's it all tinny. Really tinny. From one tiny little speaker. Ha ha ha!Oh yeah. The good old days. You try driving from one end of the country to the other in an old beater with nothing but a crummy little tape machine and one only tape. And it's this Neil Young tape. Over and over and over.

It's the interval. Same interval that Rick O. used on Moving In Stereo. Off hand only two songs I can think of that use it.

Steve Hunter used it on a Lou Reed album about 40 years ago. I think. Just can't remember which one.

Neil Young is certainly one of the greatest. No question there.

I don't think there are any as obvious ties between Kurt and Neil, but really, Neil's way of playing can sometimes be recognized in Nirvana's body of work. Not to mention the sound! Neil had the grunge sound before there were grunge. A lot of bands in the 90's were inspired by him (noteably Pearl Jam) and I'm pretty sure Nirvana were too

Amongst a few other things Kurt quoted Neil in his suicide letter, which indicates he had at least heard some of Neils music and appreciated it.

@cobain0420 Just listen to this. Then listen to Young's other work - can you tell how this is written for Kurt? This is a song honoring him and his music, just the look and sound is giving it away. Look up the lyrics, even. It's a blatant tribute.

i like this video even though it is so rough and ragged and stark,shitty lighting. what it does well is show the pain in all these guys as they process Cobain's death, i love how neil touches the other singers arm, how the one man turns toward the camera after the song and then turns away because he doesn't want his face to be seen with emotion and i love! the other video i saw of this where the drummer sighs at the end before fade to black..it says it all

that was where he got his influence for "smells like teen spirit" but thats not his most respected band, or wasnt.
infact, R.E.M was the last album in his stereo that was on the day he was found. but the disk had ended as it was a while till he was found. sad but true :(
