Like most of you I have watched this a number of times as well as being a Huge NY fan - I have an original of the first album - first pressing! - which is still hard to beat!!
But is this truly old film found for the music? - the kid smoking in modern terms sees litigation arising in the years ahead - but I watch again and again and I am now just not sure. Someone gonna help me please?

What is this shit? This isn't even a good warmup jam in the studio. This ranks down there with Bob Dylan's cover of Big Yellow Taxi. He didn't even want that released. OK, I love Neil Young and he wouldn't be Neil if he didn't do off the wall stuff sometimes but rewriting Stephen Foster's classic tune as Shocking Blue's Venus is strange even for Neil, and not very original, just weird.  Interesting for a listen or two but just doesn't hold up for me.

Neil, didn't copy Shocking Blue's "Venus". He used Tim Rose's arrangement of "Oh Susanna" for The Big Three's "Banjo Song" (1963).
Robbie van Leeuwen also used Tim Rose's arrangement of "Oh Susanna" to "write" his blockbuster "Venus".

What that means is, Rose wrote a completely new melody, and paired it with the lyrics of an older song. An arrangement, by contrast, is a reconceptualization (but NOT a rewrite) of an existing piece of music-- for example, a Beatles song sung by an a cappella group, or an 18th Century Christmas carol done up as a pop instrumental. In instances such as those, the original composition is the same-- the melody does not change-- it's just the instrumentation and harmonization that does. In the case of Tim Rose's "Banjo Song," the melody bears absolutely no resemblance to Foster's original, and is thus a new composition, and not an arrangement.

On this day in 1847 {September 11th} Stephen Foster's "Oh! Susannah" was performed in public for the first time; it was sung by a local quintet at the Eagle Ice Cream saloon in Pittsburgh, PA
And 108 years later in 1955 the Singing Dogs entered Billboard's Top 100 chart on Dec. 10th with their covered version, eventually it peaked at #22 & spent 7 weeks on the Top 100.
It has also been covered in albums by James Taylor, Byrds, & Neil Young with Crazy Horse.

What a great tune .Neil Youngs last 2 albums are as good in my mind as anything in his catalogue of astounding albums..I remeber Mirrorball song x and recently Americana oh sussanah amongst others that the opening song was rea;;y raw and real.

The song, that the man with the banjo is actually playing, in this film is not "Oh Susannah", It is, "Going Across the Sea" which is a subtle beautiful old tune. He does it well. The film is called "And so they Live" (1940) Was on YouTube - but removed for copyright violation.
