Young, Neil - Oh Susannah Lyrics

Oh Susannah [x4 then repeated constantly throughout verses]

I had a dream the other night
Everything was still
I dreamed I saw Susannah
She was comin' down the hill

Oh, oh, oh, Susannah
Don't you cry for me (oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
'cause I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)

Buckwheat cake was in her mouth
The tear was in her eye
Says I'm comin' from the South
Susannah don't you cry

Oh, oh, oh, Susannah
Don't you cry for me (oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
'cause I come from Alabama with a B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)

Rained all night the day I left
The weather it was dry
Sun so hot I froze to death
Susannah don't you cry

Oh, oh, oh, Susannah
Don't you cry for me (oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
'cause I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)

I had a dream the other night
Everything was still
I dreamed I saw Susannah
She was comin' down the hill

Oh, oh, oh, Susannah
Don't you cry for me (oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
'cause I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)

Well I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee
I'm goin' to Louisiana
My true love for to see

Oh, oh, oh, Susannah
Don't you cry for me (oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
'cause I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
Yeah, I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
Yeah, I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee

I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee
(Oh Susannah, oh Susannah)
I come from Alabama with my B-A-N-J-O on my knee

  17. M.... A....

An American Original and even though Lynyrd Skynyrd says southern man don't need him in Sweet Home bama, he still loved for his great music from sea to shining sea! Roll On!

Yeah, and they too got it - in part - from somewhere else - that's how the music metamorphs. Doesn't it?

  22. I.... M....

The house silhouette at the end d oesn’t help either - !!

  23. I.... M....

Like most of you I have watched this a number of times as well as being a Huge NY fan - I have an original of the first album - first pressing! - which is still hard to beat!!
But is this truly old film found for the music? - the kid smoking in modern terms sees litigation arising in the years ahead - but I watch again and again and I am now just not sure. Someone gonna help me please?
The kid sets a new style in feet movement!

Ian: It is through an artist's eyes. Whatever medium, take whatever you like, or leave it. Personally, I am graced by the Soul of the interpretation and the images. That is only one opinion (obviously!). Life then was as the images shown. To wee me, the music complements those hard-life representations of flickering bygone times. Love and understanding always. 24. S.... C....

What is this shit? This isn't even a good warmup jam in the studio. This ranks down there with Bob Dylan's cover of Big Yellow Taxi. He didn't even want that released. Does Shakey have anyone left to stand up to him in the creative music making department anymore? He's reached iconic status now. Meaning everything he releases will be raved on by the same toothless hacks for Rolling Stone and publications of that ilk. Bought up by the faithful, then wind up in the $6.99 used bin six months later. Neil and Daryl have got to lay off the protest marches, stay out of the studio and hook up with the Horse and plug in.

    S.... C....

    wtf,,troll

    S.... C....

Darn, this Susanna is as good as ice cream for me... different strokes for different folks... love about half this album

  25. s.... ....

Shit. I just realized this is just the original Oh Susannah blended with Venus by Shocking Blue https://youtu.be/8LhkyyCvUHk

    s.... ....

You're wrong. Shocking Blue stole the melody from the Big 3 that included Mama Cass.

only boy and man are happy on this video

  30. A.... G....

the folk version of the Big Three is better.

  31. S.... H....

Mr Young is a hypocrite, likes to protest against pipe lines while getting paid to do so thus shutting down industries and people losing jobs. Perhaps if no one bought his music he might know how the people he has effected feel. He's a pompous ass.

    S.... H....

I take it things aren't going so good for you down at Loyd's Gas Station pumping that fine ass petrol thar Shane...?

    S.... H....

    Shane Hillstrom
No offence, Shane, but I believe - even in your State - professional help may be available for you. Ad hominem totally applied .

  34. N.... M....

    N.... M....

Smoking as a 4-year-old is what we're definitely missing.

    N.... M....

  40. S.... G....

Am reminded of the old song , Someones in the kitchen with Dinah......strummin on the ole banjo ...sounds like sexual referencing to me but don't let my obviously bent opinion ruin the song for you.

    r.... c....

    robert christensen
I am sure we all try to get a tune out of whatever accepting creation can reciprocate with love. R x

    r.... c....

Nope, Dinah's just a nick name for the train workings, and you can go make yourself a cup of coffee near the engine and strum on the ol' banjo to while away your travelling hours...

  44. P.... L....

  45. R.... ....

I think the old black & white film shown here was from a movie entitled, "The General" circa 1920-30's. Now, with my memory fading, I wouldn't bet the ranch on it!!

    R.... ....

No. The clip is from 'And so They Live" 1940.

  46. c.... p....

    my B-A-N-J-O on my knee!!!!

  47. s.... j....

    superbe ! quel clip

  48. M.... S....

Neil, we have lost a great soul in Robin Williams; we need for you to express it musically. If I could figure out how to do it myself, I would,

  49. P.... G....

This video have the aparience of the  Tarkovski films, looks amazing. The kid smoking is so bad for this times... Genius.

  50. A.... H....

Neil Young is an important part of musical history.  For many reasons.  He never fails to make the point. thanks Neil. Your creativity is genius !

    A.... H....

The point he make here is that his fucking awful.

Será que alguem  consegue reproduzir  o som original  do  bandolin  , seria   interresante.

  52. K.... L....

how scary and ominous were people in the olden days!

  53. G.... ....

OK, I love Neil Young and he wouldn't be Neil if he didn't do off the wall stuff sometimes but rewriting Stephen Foster's classic tune as Shocking Blue's Venus is strange even for Neil, and not very original, just weird.  Interesting for a listen or two but just doesn't hold up for me.

    G.... ....

Neil, didn't copy Shocking Blue's "Venus". He used Tim Rose's arrangement of "Oh Susanna" for The Big Three's "Banjo Song" (1963).
Robbie van Leeuwen also used Tim Rose's arrangement of "Oh Susanna" to "write" his blockbuster "Venus".

    Joop greets

    G.... ....

@Joop Jansen OK, interesting, I'd never heard of Tim Rose's version,  Neil's doing a cover then, still not my cup of tea but I guess he's not ripping anyone off.  Wonder if Leeuwen ever credited Rose.

    G.... ....

@Joop Jansen Tim Rose's version was not an ARRANGEMENT; it is a RE-SETTING of Stephen Foster's text. What that means is, Rose wrote a completely new melody, and paired it with the lyrics of an older song. An arrangement, by contrast, is a reconceptualization (but NOT a rewrite) of an existing piece of music-- for example, a Beatles song sung by an a cappella group, or an 18th Century Christmas carol done up as a pop instrumental. In instances such as those, the original composition is the same-- the melody does not change-- it's just the instrumentation and harmonization that does. In the case of Tim Rose's "Banjo Song," the melody bears absolutely no resemblance to Foster's original, and is thus a new composition, and not an arrangement.

    G.... ....

@GerMart And so that songs stay alive....

  54. R.... R....

    lol you remembered!

  55. J.... M....

    Rock! #RGM

  56. J.... B....

If you want my opinion, the video is symbolic of the low information voters who continue to support politicians who do not have the peoples interest in mind. If the 99% voted, the 1% wouldn't matter.
Father trying to make the best of it, the boy emulating his daddy, Mom trying to smile, and the remorseful look in the little girls face.

    J.... B....

Have another hit on that bong, John.

    J.... B....

BUT NOW WE HAVE A NEW PRESIDENT TRIUMPHENCE!!! (:D (:D (:D

    J.... B....

    This isn't a political video.

    J.... B....

WTF! These people probably were living through the Great Depression and were only looking to survive not vote. Music was one way to get away from their misery!

  57. f.... ....

    Far out!

  58. C.... H....

    Love it

  59. D.... K....

Man, did Neil Young and Crazy Horse ever kick these old tunes up a notch! Rough... raw... and REAL. Thumbs up.

  60. F.... J....

This song/interpretation/film combination is just amazing.  Whichever aspect brought you here, think about the others.  It's all of a piece.  And they're all great.

    F.... J....

Flo Jo do not Hey all good so

    F.... J....

Is there a chance that this could be Neil's own family? His father on the banjo perhaps?

  61. C.... ....

What not a million views 690k and climbing.  Rock on.

  62. a.... C....

this song is mad! but that kid is oozing cool

  63. s.... ....

On this day in 1847 {September 11th} Stephen Foster's "Oh! Susannah" was performed in public for the first time; it was sung by a local quintet at the Eagle Ice Cream saloon in Pittsburgh, PA
And 108 years later in 1955 the Singing Dogs entered Billboard's Top 100 chart on Dec. 10th with their covered version, eventually it peaked at #22 & spent 7 weeks on the Top 100.
It has also been covered in albums by James Taylor, Byrds, & Neil Young with Crazy Horse.
    Mr. Foster died at 37 {from a fall}

  64. I.... ....

    KEY OF A MINOR

  65. i.... ....

with my B.I.&G.O on mu knee .. nice

  66. S.... ....

What a great tune .Neil Youngs last 2 albums are as good in my mind as anything in his catalogue of astounding albums..I remeber Mirrorball song x and recently Americana oh sussanah amongst others that the opening song was rea;;y raw and real.

    S.... ....

Neil you are the greatest of all time thankyou for all your fantastic songs

  67. d.... ....

This resonates on quite a few levels - what video today has a child smoking?....brilliant.
Secondly -Yo La Tango is the first band that comes to mind when I watch this - I have no idea why....
And thanks to Chris Bailey for picking this....

  68. H.... S....

The song, that the man with the banjo is actually playing, in this film is not "Oh Susannah", It is, "Going Across the Sea" which is a subtle beautiful old tune. He does it well. The film is called "And so they Live" (1940) Was on YouTube - but removed for copyright violation.
(I really love this version of Oh Susannah)

  69. s.... b....

i left my alabama home in 1976 and acholee went to ca. with a banjo

  70. G.... P....

Uh no; no need to reevaluate anything. It is an opinion queenie.

  71. U.... R....

So true bro' , its me desperate...

  72. U.... R....

I'm an addict of this. So pleasant... Thanks Neil !

  73. I.... ....

Neil is fantastic! He can sing anything and it will be great. Same goes for Bob Dylan (look at Self Portrait for many examples with Dylan).

  74. k.... ....

fuck gangname style, its just fucking noying music, noo soul in it... i hate to hear gangnamestyle on the radio fucking everyday.. most of people who listen to that are just soo stereotypes and typicall stylish.. if you ask them what they like to listen to , theyll say " pop is good, i like that" - wtf! ? - keep it up , neil, hope to see you on another europe tour soon.. when you was around in 08 id saw you twice.. dig it!! you blowd the roskilde-festival faaraway with those crookedfingers!!!

  75. 1.... ....

    Neil is keepin it so trill{ =Þ \/\/\/\/\/\}

  76. K.... J....

Hey guys, I don't want to sound annoying but I really need some positive feedback and healthy criticism on my cover of Bob Dylan's song I shall be released, I am 14 and recorded this when I turned 13... I am not using Neils songs just to get views, he is one of my idols and one of my biggest influences and people who like 70s folk music are my target audience and the best people to get criticism off of just type in ''Bob Dylan I shall be released by Kai Johnson''

  77. M.... D....

Mmmmm....sounds a lot like Venus by Shocking Blue.

  78. c.... ....

Well...God bless Neil for bringing up the b-a-n-j-o but...where IS the b-a-n-j-o in the music?

  79. E.... ....

Glad to see Neil together with Crazy Horse again. :)

  80. G.... ....

Wow, you think Macklemore is horrible? You need to reevaluate what you call music.

  81. G.... P....

Even the worse Neil Young song is better than the nonsense being passed off as musi today. I am listening to the top twelve songs of the year as selected by a writer with MSN and each song is worse than the one before. At least this one is actually listenable.

  82. M.... T....

30 sec long ADs, we met again.

  83. M.... L....

    That little shit can dance.

  84. d.... ....

This song mades me remind of Suits (TV SERIES).
    Dont know why.

  85. c.... ....

I came in Alabama with no C-O-N-D-O-M on my meat

  86. G.... B....

How HOT is that opening 50+ seconds of geetar..!!!??? Brilliant.
Wannabe 'Musicians' with their hair gelled in a sideways swipe - take note. THAT's how it's done.
On another matter, is it true the dancing boy grew up to become "The Marlboro Man"...???

  87. O.... ....

    The song gives me a 𝄞 ♬ ♩ B.O. - N. - E.R. ♬♮ ♪ ♩♪ on my knee!

  88. O.... ....

The sound of the vinyl is very interesting - subdued w/no boost at all and layered with plenty of air. The choir part at the end is incredible. And the etching on side 4 is very sweet indeet

  89. S.... I....

A great rendition of this song and a very fitting video!

  90. h.... ....

this album really rocks. Ladies and Gentlemen Crazy horse is back

I can't wait to rock with Neil again!

  98. d.... ....
