Young, Neil - Mr. Soul Lyrics

Oh, hello Mr. Soul,
I dropped by
to pick up a reason
For the thought that I caught
that my head
is the event of the season
Why in crowds just a trace
of my face
could seem so pleasin'
I'll cop out to the change,
but a stranger
is putting the tease on.

I was down on a frown
when the messenger
brought me a letter
I was raised by the praise
of a fan
who said I upset her
Any girl in the world
could have easily
known me better
She said, You're strange,
but don't change,
and I let her.

In a while will the smile
on my face
turn to plaster?
Stick around while the clown
who is sick
does the trick of disaster
For the race of my head
and my face
is moving much faster
Is it strange I should change?
I don't know,
why don't you ask her?

    Hello Mr Young

  5. W.... L....

I never like Neil Young when he played the harmonica. Theee can only be one Bob Dylan. I don't care for Dylan at all and believe he go real lucky. But lucky is always better than good.

Ever see The Prophecy Neil? We all connect, all of life, God and this dream that is the reality that your dreams reflect. It is not through me nor you that the connection is made (which is why you have such little awareness and think things are completely unrelated and can't even get the Prophecy even if you did prophecize it), but God itself- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CiuSr-6xP4

  20. T.... B....

Ever see Albino Alligator Neil? For years before I wrote to Bob Weir (also for years) I tried to also get help from Viggo Mortensen- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA_ESgPMHtk That was all hand written pages, mostly lost now because they were sent in the mail and to his book publishing company. They just ignored me and then they sent a packet of writings back. That weekend that I finally got a response, some kind of movement from their party, the Joker played by Holmes shot a bunch of people in the movie theater. No shit Sherlock.

  21. B.... J....

    The genius of Neil Young.
50+ years of incredible, unforgettable music and lyrics.
So many "modern artists" these days could only wish and pray for even just a sliver of Neil's natural talent.

  22. T.... B....

...And you just think I'm talking smack when you are out there in your power boats making as much noise as humanly possible and going by it all so fast...

  23. T.... B....

Actually I've seen the Monster of the River- which I've also called Gongadeet because I couldn't remember or say the Indian name correctly- three times perhaps. On my way back from Mount Lassen where I spent my first summer as a volunteer biological technician I put my boat in a lagoon off the side of Klamath Lake. That was the clearest pool that you could see all the way to the bottom of, perhaps the start of a natural spring and beautiful just to float on, but underneath a log that was suspended over the water there were two large eggs just sitting there on the sandy bottom together. All I could think was that the eggs were a goose's on the log and that they rolled off into the water, but there was no remnants of a nest there on the log which would have been a weird place anyway. After looking at it for a while in my kayak I began to feel very uneasy about the situation. If I was The Crocodile Hunter I would have jumped into that pool in a flash and checked those eggs out closer, but instead I made my way to shore as quickly as possible. They were big eggs. Canadian goose sized eggs. Anyway, its kind of a big animal to miss for over 100 years, isn't it? I wonder what else you are missing that is out there if that is the case.

  24. T.... B....

What I call "The Peaceful Dragon" appears to be a form of an alligator or crocodile that doesn't have to breathe air nor have the ability to walk on land. I've seen it twice, once in my kayak and once when I was on the shore of the river several years apart. The animal also may have had a counterpart in China long ago- but perhaps they've hunted it to extinction. There are ancient ceremonial drums that they uncovered which are supposedly covered in alligator skin- they've tested it scientifically- which in fact could be dragon skin, or at least this closely related species and/or genus of more temperate climates. Researchers may have just concluded it was alligator skin because they are so similar and closely related genetically, and not realized there were other possibilities. Like myths being true. The latitude here and in China is very similar, and perhaps they have some specialized adaptations that enable them to survive cold conditions that their southern brothers do not share. Just saying. Its not everyday you meet the Emperor of China and their dragon is it? And kneel you cannot still? I see...

  25. T.... B....

Near the end of my career as a botanist I was on the road and traveling between crews and was supposed to just go from point A from point B, but I always wandered a bit because it was the only chance I got to see the country and no one was with me or keeping track of my time. When I would go to check on crews I was their boss, and they just always wondered what I was doing there, and often I had to wait for them to come in from the field in the evening anyway. Out in Idaho I drove a ways out into Shoshone Basin and the moment I put my foot down on the dirt it was bad news. Pissed. Angry. Resentful. I'm-Going-To-Kill-You-And-Your-Family young Indian brave I became, yelling at every single cloud in the sky and cursing my own name. Afterwards I really felt like I needed a drink. Idaho is special. But sometimes not in such a good way.

  26. T.... B....

Welcome to the land of the last of the peacekeepers as well as the Peaceful Dragon (aka Monster of the Columbia River which coincidentally looks just like an alligator). We do not shoot the white man, though he takes our land . Beside the river we dream all day. The bluebird sits upon the pole as reeds become our home. Rattlesnakes we pet while coyote sings to us songs about when it made the world.

  27. T.... B....

    Ok, now I'm upset.

  28. T.... B....

After years of listening to Neil and reading about him, here are some things he does to get his sound. His guitar tech says sets the action somewhat low as to get a very slight buzz to help get his sound that he likes. Second, he sings very slightly under key to get his type of emotional feel on most of his songs.

    K.... A....

Thanks for the under key singing tip!

  63. N.... V....

I'd like to have seen Hendrix do a version of this song !!!

  64. B.... S....

All Neil ever cared about was the music . his views and mine may not be the same . but all I care about is his music , fantastic

  71. j.... b....

Does anyone know what key harmonica he used on this song?  It's not a D, and not a G.

    j.... b....

A perhaps. But you know Neil;, he tunes down, hard to replicate.

    j.... b....

Pretty sure it's a G harp. Most of the notes though he seems to draw.

  77. E.... C....

    this gives me goosebumps

    E.... C....

    @Ric Room 90s i think

    E.... C....

Think it's  his  unplugged performance in 1993

    E.... C....

i got to listen to Niel Young live a couple years back in Winnipeg, at the concert hall (across the street from City Hall). it was just him playing alone and was very quiet..didnt speak to the aundience much, just sat there and played, very laid back. However, when he played this song, he used an organ instead of the guitar. Now Niel had his back to the crowd; so all i could was his big shoulders coverd with his long silvery hair, wearing that hat he likes put on nowaday as he played "Mr. Soul". he sat there in silence for about a minute, and began playing the harmonica to kick off the song. It gave this very kryptic feel that i'll never forget.. it was my first time my ears got to listen to this subtle but heavy song.

    E.... C....

My favorite next to his acoustic The Loner.

    E.... C....

    and that it should

  78. J.... P....

  81. c.... ....

Hard to improve on this song in its original state. But he did it.

    c.... ....

cdviolet20 --Yeah, I never would have guessed he could have pulled off such a supernatural-good rendition of a song that's legendary as a hard, electric rocker. Amazing!

    c.... ....

This might have been the original state

    c.... ....

I still think Trans is the best

  82. B.... ....

Neil Young reinvents Neil Young yet again. Spellbinding.

  88. M.... R....

    Happy Birthday, Neil.

  89. K.... R....

    Amazing talent.

  90. B.... W....

What key is this harmonica in? Appreciate any links to the tab.

    B.... W....

there's no tabs anywhere. you gotta do it by ear. and I believe it's the key of d but I may be wrong.

    B.... W....

pretty basic rendition of the song. really easy to play. it's in double drop D (drop both low and high E strings down to D). it's pretty much D, F, E in power chord versions for the verses and he hits the odd C and G/B chords for the ends of the verses. it's basic i tell ya.

    B.... W....

    G harp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-qJdnntmSM

  91. I.... ....

The artistry of poetry, or vice a versa.

  92. a.... r....

The dropped tuning really suits this song, and Neil's voice, which is more haunting in this version - more so than when he sings it with Crazy Horse.

    a.... r....

As soon as he hits that first note with the harp, man the whole song hits the stratosphere.

  93. A.... H....

soul is soul but the soul that Neil brings out there is sooouuullllllll of his own. if everyone knew the real life Neil lived through over the years while he was making all of his amazing music, you would never have thought he would have made it this far and still believe he would still be making it today. Neil is not only a genius when it comes to his music and maintaining an original sound far from the average bands that so many sound the same but as a survivor of many nightmares and torment (self inflicted maybe) but still the same a real survivor where so many others would have jut given up, he carried on and gave the world the best music it's had from this day back to the 1960's. my fellow Canadian, my Mr. Music who i respect in a way there are no words for...... thanks Neil for all the moods you put me into and all the moods you got me out of....

    A.... H....

+Al Huggins Nice comment and I can only second that. I love Neil, he is a beautiful, honest, strong, complete human soul and I feel like I know him personally but I never even met him. His music and live-performances hits you like a hammer in your emotional system. He is a 100% present and direct.
It's kind of funny, that, when I was younger - 25-30 years ago - I was not a big fan of Neil, I didn't "get" his lyrics and thought that he was a strange hillbilly person, maybe a little whiny. I thought I was too cool to be listening Neil Young records. Pretty funny, ey? :D

    A.... H....

+JonBenait06 And by the way: Fuck you, Mr. Bitchy Wiseass! - Was that enough words or too many? -

    A.... H....

Al Huggins sounds like your allmost as big of a fan as I am

    A.... H....

I`ve been to Winnipeg. Neil is an old soul, that is why!
When I was in Mesa Verde, a medicine man told me I was an old trunk, years past.

  99. m.... p....

I love this version , when i hear this im not constantly reminded of the rolling stones satisfaction bass, which is a shame

    m.... p....

    That the original does

    m.... p....

@Jack Hamilton a shame ? All those musicians were much more tolerant than you are now with them. They shared the same influences, that's all. And they influenced each other mutually too. This is how rock'n roll was born. What do you think about techno music now, always the same rythm, that's a shame!
Well, I agree with you : I love this version too ( well I love both in fact, each one belongs to a period ) And I like your vids too.

    m.... p....

Man trust me i understand alot about old music i listen to all the greats from 40s/50s/60s etc all im saying is that the song takes a whole new life of its own when young changes the instrumental on it ... and thanks alot for checking my vids much appreciated

    m.... p....

@Jack Hamilton That's true. The notes and the voice seems to turn around us, as if it was going on and on ,again and again... and the clown is sick of it. It's really great.
The story about Mr Soul tells that Neil wrote it in 10 min, after he was arrested for public disturbances, because of the fans around him.

  100. b.... ....

Go on Neil, change it one more time ... just to show her ! :D

    change your mind ...magic.
