Young, Neil - I Wonder Why Lyrics

For the love of man
Who could understand
What goes on
What is right
and what is wrong
Why the angels cry
And the heaven's sigh
When a child is born to live
But not like you and I.

Let the angels ring the bells
In the holy hall
May they hear the voice
That calls to them
For the love of man
Who will understand
It's alright
I know it's alright.

Down the dusty road
To the forest church
Let wander there
Let me wonder why
On the ocean wave
In the billowing sky
Let wander there
Let me wonder why.

Let the angels ring the bells
In the holy hall
Let them hear
the voice that calls.
For the love of man
Who will understand
It's alright
But I wonder why.

I wonder why.
I wonder why.
I wonder why.
I wonder why.

  5. P.... J....

my daughter had triplets 2 years ago....twin girls and a boy. I love 'em more than anything. My grandson has CP.......it just tears me up, but he is a happy kid, always smiling and laughing and trying to get everyone else to laugh....still, it's hard.

I Thought this was one of Neil's first songs he wrote? Maybe with a change in some lyrics anyway

  7. K.... G....

I agree with the writer below who said this would not have fit with the other songs on Reactor, but this would have been the best song on that forgettable album ("Shots" was a great song, but ruined by the overproduction).

Neil put a lot of unreleased tracks on albums, that didn’t make it.this song eventually found its way to psychedelic pill somehow, Neil has a lot of amazing material that gets released and some stays unreleased song is interstate it never made it to an album if I’m correct.

I love the entire record. and "overproduced" is perhaps the last word I would use to describe it. the rawness, quirky humor and complete disregard for commercial appeal is a big part of the charm.

    K.... G....

@kissmabass Interstate is on the Broken Arrow LP as a bonus track. all alone on side 4

    K.... G....

Patrick Jennings you’re right I just saw it is after track eight,

  9. C.... T....

i wonder as well. Why was my son born this way?

  10. B.... B....

the version he released officially is overproduced garbage...unfortunately he does that to a lot of his folk music...sigh.

    B.... B....

Eh, I"m a huge neil fan...when you've heard every version of every song as many times as I do...you start to get annoyed by what he actually officially releases. He's stubborn as hell and releases shitty version of his material...it's kind of funny in an aggravating way.

I have a theory that the stuff that is Neil at his most personal and vulnerable is the stuff that he often really overdoes, perhaps to try and obscure the lyrics and vulnerability somewhat. The album Homegrown is supposedly a really bare acoustic affair, but some of the tracks from that appear on other albums all hammed up. And Storytone is a more recent example aswell where I think the orchestral and big band themes are used to overly embellish the instrumentation and detract from the deeply personal lyrics. The stripped back acoustic versions of those songs are far better in my opinion
