Young, Neil - Country Girl (Medley) Lyrics

Winding paths
through tables and glass
First fall was new
Now watch the summer pass
So close to you.

Too late to keep the change,
Too late to pay,
No time to stay the same
Too young to leave.

No pass out sign on the door
set me thinking
Are waitresses paying the price
of their winking?
While stars sit in bars and decide
what their drinking,
They drop by to die 'cause it's
faster than sinking.

Too late to keep the change,
Too late to pay,
No time to stay the same
Too late to keep the change,
Too late to pay,
No time to stay the same
Too young to leave.

Find out that now was the answer
To answers that you gave later
She did the things
that we both did before, now,
But who forgave her.

If I could stand to see her crying
I would tell her not to care.
When she learns of all your lyin'
Will she join you there?

Country girl I think you're pretty,
Got to make you understand,
Have no lovers in the city,
Let me be your country man.
Got to make you understand.

    Fucking tears in my eyes
This song is epic. 28 years old and I’ve know this album my whole life thanks to my cool as Dad. rip dad

  3. C.... t....

Croz may have turned into a major (bleep) hole over the years, but his low harmony during the last verse is one of the highlights of the song.

    C.... t....

He's my favourite vocalist in CSNY. Always has been. And I wrestle with the bleep as well.

  4. S.... B....

    apocalyptic

"While stars sit at bars and decide what they're drinking

Its the organ and harmonica combo at the finale that does it for me...

  12. K.... P....

Growing up, My mom and dad listened to CSN, CSNY, Neil Young my whole life. Now I do. The harmony, the key change. Just love this.

  21. M.... S....

50K views? Shameful. I guess it needs to be shite to get views.

  22. D.... M....

Their most underrated track in my opinion. Could have adorned Buffalo Springfield Again easily.

  23. a.... v....

this song is apocalyptic, somehow creepy sad melancholy and then just blows you away, one of my fave songs involving Young

    a.... v....

Neil always rips my heart out and stomps on it. He's that good!

  24. G.... S....

A foreshadowing of great things to come from Neil (Gold Rush, then Harvest).

  25. d.... s....

there are some musicians who play good, and theres some musicians that write well.
then theres Neil. Ive read these lyrics and listened to this a 100 times, and still get chills. unbelievable imagery, great arrangement, you name it. ...how does he do it ?

  26. D.... E....

Amazing piece. Never heard anything like it. 3/4 time for goodness sake. All kinds of themes and movements. Brilliant.

  27. P.... B....

When the 3 part harmonies come in they send a shiver down my spine. Glad to know I can still feel this way 49 years after the album was released. There's life in this old fella yet!

    P.... B....

A song never breaks your heart. A song never lies to you. A song is there for you when you're down, or happy, it's there for you and remains what it was when you first found it. The meaning of it can change for you a thousand times over your life, but as that band said, the song remains the same. (my god, I quoted Led Zeppelin. Not a thing I'd usually do. I don't dislike them. I've just figured out what they meant by it. It now rings true.)

Your heart is yours, the song remains the same. Once a song gets into your heart, no matter what you go through in those 49 years, that song is going to mean to you what it meant to you the first time you heard it. The hundredth time you heard it. And it will remain that song until you listen no more.

Let's hope we bring those good feelings with us into the next world, or wherever we go. Better to bring the good, and just leave all that bad behind. Because a song helps you get through that bad. The feeling should survive, if it can defeat something that's trying to end you.

    The song remains the same.
(unless you find out the song was actually meant about doing underage kids, or racist, or .... you get me. You want the intent to be pure and not tainted by some nastiness underneath, or finding out how much of an asshole the writer was. ) ;)

  28. R.... C....

This tune BLEW MY MIND IN THE EARLY 1970S! To quote from The Monkees: "I'm a believer!" * CAV *

  29. M.... S....

Brilliant songwriting, performance and recording. A masterpiece.

Smoked my first doobie to this album.

    D.... G....

so you were the guy in the corner that nobody knew....next time, come up and sit with us (and it's puff, puff, pass) always to the left

  32. j.... h....

These guys were UNBELIEVABLE. So glad I grew up with incredible music like this to listen to.

  33. D.... N....

    Nice to hear those harmonies!

  34. C.... W....

Good to the hear the crackles in the background. Like listening to music used to be.

  35. B.... G....

The best CNS&Y stuff sounds like Buffalo Springfield partII

  36. p.... ....

Is it just me or does
    Listening to this
    Actually hurt
    To think that I
    Lived in the greatest
    Time to be a teenager.
Was it a dream or was
    I sleeping?
    I awaken and realize
    It will never come again
I close my eyes and begin weeping

    p.... ....

I can definitely relate. I'm 61 and too often reflect about how "cool" it was growing up in the 70's. It DOES seem like a good dream that passed far too fast.

    p.... ....

@Gary Zajdel mid 60s early 70s were music's best era.

    p.... ....

Pigurine, I feel you, brother, I feel you.

    p.... ....

I had the same thoughts but I am REJOICING!

    p.... ....

@Jeff Cory a lot about which to be joyful from that era of the greatest music and musicians

  37. J.... R....

Neil Young an accomplished person for sure... this guy's done alot of livin. I always loved this one and it really fit in with the 1970 scene.

  38. J.... L....

"will she join you there" is the perfect harmony in any song in music history in telling a story. you can't change my mind

    This came out fine.

  41. S.... H....

Well done. Good video and sound. Thanks for posting. I like the fade out at the end where the album cover fades away and Country Girl is left.

    S.... H....

Thanks, I have a better version of it now, but I leave this up as it stands

  44. B.... B....

This is certainly one of the best albums ever made, each track perfect in its own unique way. This song moves me like no other on the album.

    B.... B....

I think part of that is that each artist got to showcase his unique talents in at least one song. Yes, they collaborated, but first in one direction, then the other, then the other. (The Beatles sort of did the same to an extent, but Ringo would get his 1 and George his 2). I think this one is really like 4 equally-divided mini-albums in one, with each one having their own name on each album. Just my take on it. And, yes, when put together, it's one really great album. (Oh, ignore me man, I just make this stuff up as I go along).

  45. A.... ....

I always sing the chorus when I meet a country girl and I think she's pretty...it's a pretty good icebreaker actually...

  46. W.... P....

    My all time favorite song

  47. S.... R....

Stellar track -- appreciate hearing the pops & clicks in the vinyl at the end

  48. J.... W....

    P.... M....

the bankers and monopolists who did this to us.

  50. R.... M....

Like a shy lover, the song builds through several passages before finally arriving at what sounds more like its true chorus. Brilliant, surprising, and ultimately satisfying and successful songwriting.

  51. T.... P....

this is the best cut on album that was perfect start to finish
always liked listening to the distinctive vocals of the composer/lead vocal
when music had these harmonies and melodies it was given the power to transcend time and place a rare feat in the disco era and the schlock that has passed for music, with rare exception, from the 80s until present day
80s music is an oxymoron and black eyed peas are evidence of what good audio engineers can do with 3rd hack jobs posing as artists

  52. J.... T....

    Brilliant

  53. R.... P....

Neil Young's lyrics turn life 'inside out' and expose the true beauty within.
    This is a masterpiece!

    R.... P....

    Well said

    R.... P....

are waitresses paying the price of their winking ? hmm

    R.... P....

@David Pancerev Unfortunately and apparently, "Yes". Feminism has deteriorated romance the same way opinions have replaced objectivity and destroyed journalism and humor has been ruined by political correctness. Please forgive my negative but honest assessment of the status quo of the social human condition. I do wish I was joking and pity the millennials.

    R.... P....

@Richard Picone sad but true Richard

Always has been my favorite track from this album. The transition into the final section is so brilliant. Just stunning, even after all these years. One of Neil Young's best!

    C.... S....

@Timothy Abbott Oh, yeah for sure! I also love the organ work on this album. Which is why it's so cool that these guys were given the special recognition they received. Really a very nice gesture, acknowledging the importance of their contributions.

    C.... S....

I wholeheartedly agree Conrad Sabatier!! It's a real gem!!

    C.... S....

    Just past midnight, pissed, bliss.

    C.... S....

@Conrad Sabatier - I'm thinking this generation would hear this and it would sound to them like their 'music' sounds to us.

    C.... S....

This song plays almost as a reprise, or a continuation, of Young's incredible Buffalo Springfield opus, Broken Arrow. Masterful!
