Young, Neil - Clementine Lyrics

In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner forty niner,
And his daughter Clementine

Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Herring boxes, without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.

[Chorus:]
Clementine! Clementine!
Oh my darling, Clementine!

Drove she ducklings to the water
Ev'ry morning just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.

[Chorus]

Then the miner forty niner
Soon began to peak and pine.
Thought he ought'er join his daughter,
Now he's with his Clementine.

In my dreams she still does haunt me,
Robed in garments soaked in brine.
Though in life I used to hug her,
In death I draw the line.

[Chorus]

How I missed her! How I missed her,
How I missed my Clementine,
So I kissed her little sister,
I forgot my Clementine.

[Chorus]

Psychedelic Pill, Neil Young and Crazy Horse's last great album, now all we get is utter garbage, with him playing with crap bands or trash solo albums.

WHY is this not on the f...n radio? Sure sounds good with headphones ! Is this the last album he did with Crazy H ?

Neil always finds these cool pictures to complement his tunes!
The "panning for gold" stuff goes great with the punky tempo of "Clementine"!!!

  11. J.... H....

    It's all about the "Gold".....

  12. k.... ....

Why does my blood run cold everytime I hear the "So I kissed her little sister and forgot my Clementine" line?

    k.... ....

The miner had two daughters whom he loved as a father. The little sister was his younger daughter. He had to keep on living for her after he lost Clementine.

WILD and about as dark as the song is... there was a first Rock and Roll version of this in 1959 by Jan and Dean ... Jan Berry of Jan and Dean was Bruce Berry's oldest brother, if you are a Neil Young fan you know who Bruce Berry is... Jan Berry was the first real genius of rock and roll with an IQ over 185...

    G.... M....

Thanks for the tip... Wow how the conception of this song and instrumental style changed since 59' and that was the time of the great electric guitar designs and amps.

    G.... M....

Man, that is absolutely fascinating! Thanks for that knowledge/trivia which is all news to me. I love learning any tidbits about one of my all-time heroes. I really dig this punky rendition!... Just to clarify, I was aware that "Bruce Berry was a workin' man" & "he used to load that Econoline van." and that "a sparkle was in his eye but his life was in his hands" etc., but I had no idea that Jan Berry was his bro. So thanks for that sad but cool factoid.

    G.... M....

it is not that changed, it is what it is, In this case is Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and that has to have a particular character because they are titans of a tradition, The original tune mention here, is the original and it is still there

  50. K.... G....

Neil Young is amazing. Yes, there are still a few 65-year-old rock stars out there who are still active, who still tour, and who still (try to) make new music. Only one continues to make music that is relevant. Without a doubt, Neil Young has taken a few strange detours over the years, but, every time you count him out and think that, perhaps, his time is finally past, he shocks you with something amazing. I defy you to find me someone half Mr. Young's age making music this good today.

  51. D.... B....

When I first heard Neil was releasing this album, I thought, "Oh, great. Crazy Horse is doing the classics. Ho-hum."
But Americana just blew me the F away. This is just great, great rock and roll. Wow. WOW.
Neil and Crazy Horse truly are like fine wine. They just keep getting better.

Only good song on the album, but it alone is worth the purchase price!

  61. D.... ....

Let's be honest. Only Neil Young can do this. He could sind the books of the Bible and it would still be the shit.
Because anything he does is the shit.

Neil is the man. The Keeper of the Flame. Long may you run Neil, there ain't no one like you, not even Mr. Gilmour.

Hey Hey. Rock and Roll is here to stay.

  70. o.... ....

Terrible! The whole album is this unlistenable, too. I've heard better singing and playing from the middle-school kids in my neighborhood, who are getting their garage band going.

  71. d.... ....

Most of todays 'rock bands' would benefit from locking themselves in a listening chamber with this album on repeat. The emotion, the camaraderie, the community that Neil and Crazy Horse bring to this album(like all their albums) is so inspiring. I love the imperfections, the honesty, the places you go when you listen. Thanks Neil and Crazy Horse for another gem!

To the haters that do not get this album, you must understand that these are songs from an age of innocence when our great nations were still under construction. In today's fast paced world, these traditional songs were on the abyss of becoming lost forever on the current generation. Neil young aims to bring some life back to the songs that our grandparents grew up singing as children!

CRAZY GOOD! When I first saw the track listing for "Americana", I thought that this could be a disaster. Then I bought the album and was inspired from the first to the last note. Only Neil could take this group of traditional songs and pull the true soul out of every one. I'm so inspired that I'm going camping up in the mountains this weekend. A perfect spot I know near Banff, Alberta where I can camp without anybody else within 10 miles. While, almost alone...Neil Young, Pocohantas and me.
