Young, Neil - Changes Lyrics
Sit by my side, come as close as the air
And share in a memory of gray
And wander in my words
Dream about the pictures that I play of changes
To brown and to yellow, they fade
And then they have to die
Trapped within the circle time parade of changes
Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind
Visions of shadows that shine
One day I returned and found they were
The victims of the vines of changes
The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark
A race around the stars
A journey through the universe ablaze with changes
Moments of magic will glow in the night
All fears of the forest are gone
But when the morning breaks
They're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes
Passions will part to a strange melody
As fires will sometimes burn cold
Like petals in the wind
We're puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes
Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else
One last cup of wine we will pour
And I'll kiss you one more time
And leave you on the rolling river shore of changes

Young, Neil Changes Comments
One word: breathtaking.
I believe he plays Hank William's guitar here and Phil Ochs would have so loved that!
I like when Neil gets all glary with somebody in the place. Then he's playing with that edge we all like. Neil.
Neil young is a big inspiration to me. Let em av it buddy. Check out Ross Heathorn I got some ruff acoustic tunes on there. Peace world x
Talking about Curt Cobain. We’re on Neil time! Take your time. My great grandfather blue his brains out in the cellar in 1927. . .
Fkcn cable anyhow!
what a beautiful song.....
He's wrong about Carnegie being the last gig AND really wrong about Phil being distracted by showbiz and fame.
Phil was a romantic, a patriot, an activist, and bipolar & his body of work is a triumph that endures.
If you remember Phil and recall a younger Neil, you're probably crying just a little bit, but don't want the Mrs. to notice.
So simple so pure notes as clear as a cloudless sky
He sings this with such tenderness. And the guitar ...
Wow brother, that was beautiful, I am proud to have walked this planet, as your legendary music, all of it shaped my soul, SIMPLY AWESOME THANK YOU NEIL YOUNG**********
Love Is The Answer
Allways ✌️❣️🌟🍃🌺🍃
There is always a muppet that will make a fool of himself Neil sure did deal with him
Have loved Phil for decades now... thank you for posting this
I come back to this video frequently, and most of the time I just want to hear the song, but I always feel bad for skipping to it. lol
This is great. Such an awesome song...
Can't believe this just now popped up on my YouTube in June 2019. I've been collecting all the YouTube videos of Phil's songs for a bunch of years. I'm of that age (70), that grew up on Phil Ochs (and all the rest of the great 'topical' (protest) music singers, writers etc.
I always thought Phil was better then Dylan. I was very lucky to see him perform many times in the 60's and early 70's. later.
His lyrics were profound, even more so, now 50-60 yrs later when one takes a look at the US and the state of the world overall.
I strongly encourage those not familiar with him, to Google him and pull up YouTube songs here.
Thanks Neil Young for the song and words about Phil.
So envy anyone who saw Phil Ochs perform live. I've admired him for 54 years since first hearing him on my radio. Listen to these amazing words! A glimpse into his heart.
I love Neil...
And, of course, I love Phil...
In 2013, at the end of Changes, he said STOP CLIMATE CHANGE. It's 2019 now and the fossil fuel industry, the Koch brothers, Exxon Mobile, BP, and others are still fast-tracking oil exploration and production for our combustion engine dependent travel and just letting the exorbitant profits roll in while our planet is in a state of destruction. This is the dawn of changes.
What did he say at 1-43 ? I work for me ?
Karol King wrote that song ;-) I learned that song from the debut album of Gordon Lightfoot! ;-)
Schraube200 no
Phil Ochs wrote it
Neil during the Dec. 12th 1969 show Public Hall Cleve., Oh stopped in the middle of a song walked down to the 12th row & broke up a fight between the Hells Angel's & unknown, but peace was had immediately. Doubtful if that will ever be seen again,
Thanks Neil.. " LEGEND"💗
🌹🥰❤️
Yes, life is short Neil but your song will be forever
LA MAS HERMOSA Y TRISTE CANCIÓN.......DE UN POETA-CANTOR AMIGO DE VICTOR JARA, AMBOS CON UN FINAL TRÁGICO Y TRISTE: COMO ESTA CANCIÓN.
Love Neil and Phil.
A nice tribute to Phil Ochs
Born To Rock
Who yells out, "come on let's go" when a great musician is sharing a story.
No one is going to ""mute"" Neil, he is outspoken , and that,s the way we like him, we need more like him.
Neil young,excelente
Tell em Neil .......to kiss ya ass! HAVE A LITTLE RESPECT FOR GREATNESS! wow what's the world now ? Its 2019 now, less less respect?
I HUGGED A BUTTERFLY, IT GOT ALL OVER ME!

"I work for me"
Phil Ochs , I will always admiré you, you will be always on my mind. Lots of love for you my friend.
Love this 💕
stunning
January 5th 2019,the song that I never forgot
Gotta love Neil Young...my fav..
gotta love Neil Young! and the respect, honor to his friend Phil Ocho. Did he say his last performance was at Carnegie Mellon?
Neil Young is the man. Listen to his i find myself either floating down a stream relaxed, or grabbed by the ears and shown what Rock 'N Roll is all about.
Seems to me Neil is doing more an echo of Ian & Sylvia's insightful 1960s cover of Phil's "Changes"...
Goes to show Neil cares about others and they're pain.
Uncle Neil has got me thru some pretty rough times. Much Love & Peace ☮
Neil has always gone the other way... his way. Phil was truly a great talent who wrote of life but couldn't handle it. So many have gone before and since.
NO one has ever written a better song than this, and it might be the best poetic lyrics ever. So deep, so uncompromizingly deep.
Can't help but thinks of C Hitchens when I hear this.
Thanks Neil Young for all the beautiful songs and music you give to us.
Changes ♡
I work for me!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you
RIP Phil Ochs. We need you today. You were right. Fascism has come to the USA.
"I work for myself" that is so Neil Young. Got to admire this man he is a true legend. I grew up listening to him from Buffalo Springfield, CSYN, and with Crazy Horse. I had several of his albums.
Mr Neil Young is so humble and simple in his approach of any songs even his own songs. Respects Mr Neil Young. He has a great respect for everyone.
Under The Lime
(Sublime)
Saw Phil sing this in Carnegie Hall 1966 - deep love song for 15 year old kid...also caught the Gold Lame suit night Neil mentioned and that was a crazy sad night (bomb scare emptied first show) watching Phil on downward drift.
' I work for myself ' That told him Neil! Brilliant song. Thanks Phil and Neil.
The song begins at 3:26 Good introduction, although I think Phil wearing the lame suit at his last concert was ironic , joking on Elvis who had worn same suit in the 50s.... his chords of fame song shows he was not really trying that route..(I think). Great version by Neil. Love it even more than Phil's original version.
I work for myself!
"I work for myself"
Sit by my side, come as close as the air
Share in a memory of gray
And wander in my words
Dream about the pictures that I play of changes
Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall
To brown and to yellow, they fade
And then they have to die
Trapped within the circle time parade of changes
Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind
Visions of shadows that shine
One day I returned and found they were
Victims of the vines of changes
The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark
It swings through a hollow of haze
A race around the stars
A journey through the universe ablaze with changes
Moments of magic will glow in the night
Fears of the forest are all gone
But when the morning breaks
They're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes
Passions will part to a strange melody
As fires will sometimes burn cold
Like petals in the wind
We're puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes
Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else
One last cup of wine we will pour
And I'll kiss you one more time
And leave you on the rolling river shore
Great respect given here to Phil by Neil!!!!!!!
Neil Young alone on an acoustic Martin...ahhh, doesn't get better than that.
The Master Class.
Respect Mister Neil
I love Neil
I actually thought he was referring to Kurt Cobain at first ("blew his head off", Cobain had referenced a Neil song in his suicide note). Ochs hanged himself rather than shot.
Armentitron he was also talking about his friend Kurt kobin who blew his head of sadly
Go Neil.
If you're being self indulgent and your paying customer calls you out on it, you don't double down and get snippy.
Funny how Phil Ochs never leaves my mind. I dance to his tunes and sing them in the shower, especially Draft Dodgers Rag and Small Circle of Friends.
Netflix presented a documentary of his life including reminiscences by his friends and family. His sister said that Phil would casually sit in the living room chair reading the newspaper. As he sat he would instantly write songs based on the news. He was a genius. He used to talk about suicide and his friends did everything they could to save him. Don’t quote me but I believe he took his life when Nixon declared the war was over.
The “come on let’s go!” Guy in the audience probably got punched in the face.
Great job Neil, my first listen to Changes, the poetic lyrics in this masterpiece by the late Phil Ochs certainly hit home with great emotion.
There is an outstanding documentary film about Phil Ochs that was produced by his brother. For many years, his sister organized annual tribute concerts around the country, in large part to help people come to terms with his passing. It took me years, and encouragement from her, to finally attend one.
Although he was a founding member of the Yippies, Phil always dressed conservatively. He understood that if you wanted people to take you seriously, you had to act seriously. He was the only hero I've had, and this song is the reason I bought a guitar and a little book of Phil Ochs songs when I was 14. I was fortunate to see him in concert, at Mandel Hall on the campus of the University of Chicago when I was in high school.
When the Yippies nominated a pig (Pigasus) for president in 1968, it was Phil who INSISTED that they pay the farmer for the pig. Hoffman and Rubin wanted to just steal it. Phil Ochs was a true mensch.
These words bring a tear ,,,,great cover Neil your the best ,!
You'll always be my hero Neil
One of Phil's best, r.i.p
Lightfoot did a great version of this song as well. Very beautiful piece of music.
Gary Davison
Gary. Did you hear Neil just Cover.
If U could read my Mind from Lightfoot.
Video is on here but he just recorded it in the Studio. Incredible
Peace !
What's up with that cigar store Indian, Neil? I guess you take it on the road with you? I thought you were better than that.
OK Neil this is one of the greatest songs ever written but your version sucks and I love you and Phil both.
Love you Neil Young and believe that my children and their children will too.
Oh yeah, my parents were at this show, unfortunately I couldn't be there. I am so glad and grateful to see this on YouTube, I've probably watched this 100 times in the last few years. Please come back to upstate NY for a real good time, bring Willie too 😍
Lucky snuff to see Phil in Madison in YUGE anti-war benefit. Paul Butterfield opened.
I saw Neil Young in late 1967 or early 1968, in Buffalo, New York, when he was in Buffalo Springfield, who were on a bill with the Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Beach Boys. The Springfield were playing first and something didn't sound right, either a sound check moment or the first song - I can't remember. What I do remember is that someone in the crowd started booing, and even then, even though he was only 21 or 22, Neil had total confidence and a bit of an attitude on stage, because as soon as he heard the booing, he stepped up to the mike and started booing right back, then said "Boo to you, with this crappy sound system!" The only performer I ever heard boo the crowd!
what does he say at the end ? "some changes can't be stopped.. but ?????
Neil if someone can help you with your concert for the kids every year it might be Eddie Vedder he would love to take over for you
We all love you very much and hope and pray that you are well. God bless you brother.
hermosa canción!
Much Love to Neil Young, Phil Ochs. I love you both so very much
Neil does a great lo-fi version of this song on his album "A letter home".
