Young, Neil - Borrowed Tune Lyrics

I'm climbin' this ladder,
My head in the clouds
I hope that it matters,
I'm havin' my doubts.

I'm watchin' the skaters
Fly by on the lake.
Ice frozen six feet deep,
How long does it take?

I look out on peaceful lands
With no war nearby,
An ocean of shakin' hands
That grab at the sky.

I'm singin' this borrowed tune
I took from the Rolling Stones,
Alone in this empty room
Too wasted to write my own.

I'm climbin' this ladder,
My heads in the clouds
I hope that it matters.

  10. J.... R....

I bought this album when I was just 15 years old. Aside from After the Gold Rush, my fave Neil Young album.

    Sheer brilliance

  15. N.... O....

Thanks Neil, this seems to encapsulate my life. A lot of climbing, with frozen ice. I wish there were peaceful lands that grabbed at the sky. I only hope that it matters!

  16. K.... D....

Does this song sound just a tad like Mercury Revs epic "The Dark is Rising"? It gives me kinda the same vibe in a way.

    K.... D....

I think Mercury Rev take a lot of inspiration from Neil Young, more than they let on... Even Jonathan Donahue sounds just like Neil!

  17. H.... D....

    Ain't too proud to steal.

  18. D.... G....

I hope that it matters. ice frozen 6 feet deep, how long does it take?

  19. N.... S....

The ice is now frozen more than six feet deep, even though our current
government does not believe in global warming! Such a sad situation
with all eyes turned in. So, I'm still I'm climbin' this ladder,
    My heads in the clouds
    I hope that it matters.

  20. a.... b....

For Neil Young to humbly acknowledge the Rolling Stones in what is one of his most personal , touching, beautiful songs , is testimony to the man and the artist.

    a.... b....

Why wouldn't he acknowledge them? The tune is a blatant ripoff of the Stones' *Lady Jane*

    a.... b....

    andy bangs
    I'm with you. Awesome work.

  21. C.... ....

Masterpiece of an album, never gets old.

    C.... ....

His last truly great album in my book.

    C.... ....

DAYHOMEONE Zuma? American Stars n Bars?

    C.... ....

I know its all up to opinion but I love Trans,Harvest Moon and Ragged Glory just as much as this

    C.... ....

    Neil Young nevever gets old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. n.... ....

He's singing this stolen tune, which he stole from The Rolling Stones.

    n.... ....

no he isnt. its not stolen but borrowed. and its only a slight similarity to Lady Jane, but Neil has the decency to acknowledge them in the song, its humility and genius all in one

    n.... ....

    AMEN Bro!

    n.... ....

Just made a song better, really

  23. M.... D....

    It does matter.

  24. A.... I....

I hope for a peaceful land too

  25. M.... J....

    my dear lady jane,

  26. M.... F....

    Again Timeless

  27. T.... T....

this song is deep love it!

  28. A.... I....

Seul un statisticien peut lire derrière les nombres

  29. A.... I....

    We need a peaceful world
    Yes we do

  30. A.... I....

    We need a peaceful world

  31. G.... W....

Pitchfork told me this album was good, so I can like it now.

  32. M.... P....

Check out 54 40's version of this (no disrespect to Neil).

  33. t.... b....

Hahahah! I actually love this. An actual wah, made by an actual player. Actually.

  34. N.... E....

Can't get enough of this tune.

  35. D.... A....

    from desperation comes inspiration.

  36. T.... G....

    My favorite Neil song.

    T.... G....

+Thomas Garrity Would have to be a top contender for my favorite. I'd never be able to make up my mind, though. I used to tell people Thrasher, but then there was this and Look Out For My Love and...

  37. A.... I....

    Arrêtons le massacre des abeilles

  38. K.... T....

Played this so much wore out a very thick album & 2 8 track tapes

  39. A.... I....

    where no war nearby

    A.... I....

Haunting, but the very title of BORROWED TUNE reveals, to those who remember, the fact that Neil Young "stole" the melody from a monster hit by the Rolling Styones, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, which Brian Jones, about to meet his death, played dulcimer on. The Stones never have performed LADY JANE live since the death of Jones. Personally, I read a little GLOOMY SUNDAY in this entire matter?

  40. A.... I....

I'm looking for this world too

  41. M.... ....

    Beautiful!

  42. r.... c....

If memory serves the next song on the album was Come on Baby Lets go Downtown.....remember thinking..wtf...was almost asleep , jumped out of bed ran into the wall...

    r.... c....

It's a really awesome jolt. The whole album is pretty sobering, especially playing Downtown right after this tune.

  43. d.... y....

1st thanks CosmosOfBeauty for post , a great Canadian , never fails to move deeply

    d.... y....

I like his "Searching for a Heart of Gold"

    and I'm getting old...

    Good words

and I'll listen to yours now...

    ...

like his harmonic work in his songs

yes, seems we're all singing "borrowed tunes.."

but in Heaven, mate, There will be a New song continually

where we'll know all things and if you are there, we'll be best of buds for eternity.

    No more tears

    No more sorrows

    No more Faith

    No more Hope

    Just LOVE

    Peace

    out

    d.... y....

it matters and He; our Lord Jesus is Altogether Worthy...

  44. s.... s....

    1969 me

  45. A.... ....

I am a fan, I have been listining to Neil since 1973 Ihave seen him at least 27 times and this is my favorite Neil Young song, its right there with John Lennons In My Life....

    A.... ....

Ice is still frozen 6 feet deep... but I'm still climbing this ladder.

  46. J.... N....

    What a great cover .

  47. K.... B....

Amongst thousands I own.... my favorite album of all-time for the last 20 years.

  48. R.... r....

Wikipedia says it's the melody to Rolling Stones' "Lady Jane".  I agree and I'm sure they settled on the "borrowing" or get sued like George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" and the Shirelles "He's So Fine".

  49. r.... n....

Whatever you might want to say about this record it came out just after I learned death does come to you and yours and theres no question about who it pays a visit to.  Neil might have had his own reasons to be dark and mysterious towards at this time but it coalesed perfectly with  the violent death ot three friends of mine at the time so what can one really say about that?

  50. l.... ....

    ... Lady Jane -

    l.... ....

That's why It's called "Borrowed Tune".

    l.... ....

Jagger/Richards are credited on the album notes and in the lyrics he acknowledges he borrowed it from The Rolling Stones.

  51. d.... b....

This album is so perfect. Sad & gut wrenching, but perfect

    d.... b....

    dean b
That is a perfect description of this album.

    d.... b....

    dean b Without a doubt.

    d.... b....

I agree dean g, as I climb the ladder of existence.

  52. T.... ....

    it matters always ~ Neil

  53. J.... ....

I know this song is stolen from The Rolling Bones' "Lady Jane." But "Wichita Lineman", which is written by Jimmy Webb, is also stolen from "Lady Jane!"

    J.... ....

Neil says in the lyric that he borrowed this tune from The Rolling Stones

  54. S.... B....

I hope that it matters. How can I share this on every public aka social network?! Whazzah!

  55. J.... L....

If you go first, I will make sure they play it mate.
    Regards,
    J.

  56. J.... E....

just heard my first Neil Young song today from my friend. I owe him so much for introducing me to this

  57. g.... p....

    thanks

  58. h.... ....

Few fans of Neil rank this in their lists as one of his greats. I don't understand why because it is a masterpiece.

    h.... ....

This is the best album ever made. Maybe the polls are checking in with superficial fans.

  59. D.... S....

My Sweet Lady Jane... How many artists would cop to this homage? (hint, not many). Neil is the Man even with a borrowed tune!

  60. S.... ....

    ...Scott Pilgrim.

  61. a.... c....

I just came back from comment bashing Dub-step videos. Ahhh it feels good to be home.

  62. B.... S....

I laughed when a friend of mine told me this song would make me cry. Then I heard it...

  63. C.... T....

That's the good thing about youtube. I'm 16 and I absolutely love Neil Young. His songs are beautiful.

  64. r.... ....

I disagree, there's a bunch of exciting new stuff, but they're harder to find. Nowadays music is great, but you have to look for it. Some bands you should check: the black angels, the growlers, white bone rattle, tame impala...

  65. A.... S....

I love this song when I am really, really depressed.

  66. t.... ....

Man, I love Neil Young :)

  67. K.... B....

it's adapted from it, i think

  68. j.... h....

How many folks can "borrow" a tune and turn it into this. Brilliant!

  69. r.... ....

honestly, there's some hope, check out what's going on around austin, there are a lot of new garage-psych-surf-rock bands that make music fun and good again. Check the Austin Psych Fest, the last really good festival on this earth!

  70. G.... V....

i think tha's explain the lines "I'm singin' this borrowed tune
I took from the Rolling Stones,
    Alone in this empty room
Too wasted to write my own."

  71. G.... V....

Looks like the rolling stones's song lady jane =/

  72. A.... a....

I agree theblaman! you have to hear the whole album from Neil to understand the emotianal state he is in writing this Album two of his best friends bruce berry and danny whitten died at that time. At first he didn't even bring out the album Tonight's the Night.Neil used the tune from S.L.Jane in a good way ,cause it lift up the song.Antarabbit

  73. q.... ....

I want to post put I don't know want to say. Thank You Neil. Whoever you are.

  74. K.... ....

    @theblahman Well said.

  75. R.... d....

@christoJihad2 Ya, well. We have Fleet Foxes.

  76. R.... d....

    My sweet lady Jane,...

  77. A.... D....

    Neil kills it here.

  78. t.... ....

@flatpackmatt Its borrowed, he credited them, you may need to hear it in within the context of the whole album, hes in such dispair, he needs to borrow a melody to express his emotions(the protagonist of the song), hes not trying to outdo the Stones, he may even be trying to purposely fail within this regard, but by the way (yes I used the words, im bringing them back) I fuckin love the Stones, and love Lady Jane, but I see this as a different track, all artist borrow and steal, few admit it

  79. l.... ....

this is my favorite neil young. hes tha best

  80. M.... P....

How stoned was he, this is almost painful. I'm smiling cos I know he [NY] openly admits to ripping it off from The Stones' -Lady Jane - its a p*ss poor copy. Sorry NY fans.

  81. S.... H....

This is gay as hell lisen to lil wayne guys, he can actualy play gitar beter

  82. m.... ....

    @mussman717word
It's just that personal, you know.

  83. m.... ....

    @christoJihad2
We had the White Stripes and Frusciante in the Chili Peppers, now even that's gone. I hate to sound like a whiney bitch, it's just this album, it really hits home in that respect. I mean, as of now, Neil is speaking my words.

  84. M.... T....

@tamster5e I wrote a song a few years ago that spoke of total deceit in the chorus:

you can sell noise if you call it "music"
even trash if you describe it "art"
you can peddle hate if you call it love
or take us all if you have no heart

    Randi W. Thomson
    C. 2006

  85. M.... T....

@tamster5e I couldn't agree more. The music business is a filthy business run by the same kind of bean counters who will put an obviously dangerous new car on the road even though they know the gas tank's a bomb, the brakes catch fire, and the car causes injuries simply being parked in the driveway! Numbers crunchers can justify anything under the sun as long as it makes money. It's disgusting.

  86. T.... F....

@christoJihad2 the results of a disposeable? culture they always lookin 4 the next big thing ,iIntegrity is just a dirty word the fact that it takes an artist a while to develope a personality is lost on the companys they want results which translates to money the fact that the song might say something is just a bonus to sell it to the hippies

  87. K.... M....

This is pure gold. My favourite album ever.

  88. D.... C....

Three people that you would love to dine with, living or dead.
Neil Young, Davy Crockett, and Abraham Lincoln.
Sorry, Billy Bob... you get nasty sometimes.
(Just can't trust that boy these days.)

  89. D.... C....

In "Rolling Stone" Neil confessed that he just got up in the middle of the night... turned on the recorder and started playing the words in his head to an old Stones tune.
He pretty much admits to it in the songs lyrics.
Maybe the best song on the album.

  90. C.... ....

    @plepetit This blows my mind.

  91. M.... T....

@benyblanco1 If you knew more about Mick Jagger or Keith Richards, you'd know that both are multi-instrumentalists. Mick plays guitar, bass, piano, keyboards and harmonica. And Keith plays the same except for harmonica. Don't misunderstand me, I dig Neil Young. I met all the members of Crazy Horse and had an opportunity to meet Neil too, and basically chickened out. I don't know why, probably because he's one of my favorite songwriters and I've dug him since the Buffalo Springfield.

  92. C.... ....

@StartRunDMC What is that short poem in the beginning supposed to be? It's just like, "Don't let it bring you down"?

  93. M.... T....

@spinnact Like I said, I've been listening to newer bands lately and all the bands you've mentioned, plus "Interpol" and "Cold War Kids" are two bands I listened to and like, too. And I'm sure there are lots of other bands out there....

  94. j.... j....

@christoJihad2 theres a lot of crap around today as with every other generation of music. i hate it when people say 1960/70/80/90 were better than now or better than each other. there's bands aplenty now who last eg kings of leon, the black keys, radiohead, arcade fire, the white stripes, the strokes, etc. the 2000s ain't that bad baby. great lasting artists are very rare (neil young, tom waits etc) but i'd say Dan Auerbach (of the black keys) is one to watch.

  95. C.... ....

@GoreyOr, This guy knows where it's at.

  96. B.... ....

@eurydicejones Your comment shows a lack of intelligence. Syd Barret was over rated. His songs were tragically idiotic and childish, and disgustingly dated and unoriginal. I hope you were lying. I hope you were trying to sound rebellious and off the wall just to get attention. Because if you truly do believe that with songs like "Atom Heart Mother," Echoes," "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," staring you in the face, you should consider killing yourself. Fuck you

  97. C.... ....

@christoJihad2 Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm 16. I've never met anybody in person that was even close of a big of a fan I am though.

  98. P.... M....

I like Neil's raspy tired voice on this one! :) Actually that's what I love about "Tonight's The Night", it has that one-take loose touch.. very honest record, very good record! :)

  99. C.... ....

    @eurydicejones Fuck you.
