Yola - Faraway Look Lyrics

You lit the candles on the cake
And threw the match down on the floor
Wish I knew what you were wishing for
Handing out the paper plates
To all your friends that you adore
Are you haunted and wanting more?

That faraway look in your eyes
It's getting harder to disguise

Nobody moves the way you do
Walking 'round the grocery store
Only you know what you're looking for
And when your working day is through
You walk the darkness to your bed
To dream the dreams that live inside your head

That faraway look in your eyes
It's getting harder to disguise

That faraway look in your eyes
It's getting harder to disguise

My brain generally turned off my ability to be open to new music after the 1990s, maybe the early 2000s. Yet once in a while something breaks in and this song did it on my first hearing and her voice is a blessing. Everything contained here is emotional and speaks so deeply to my dreams and even more deeply to my pains.

The way she commands her voice going from major to minor keys is amazing, and the sound is like a wall. Kinda reminiscent of Phil Spector's wall of sound. This beautiful and talented woman has a great career in front of her. I'll buy her music.

Just moments ago, I was in the midst of multitasking while watching Jimmy Kimmel. The musical guest at the end of the show was Yola singing "Faraway Look". I had never heard this song, nor had I ever heard of her. As the music began, my interest was piqued by the melody. Then as she began to sing, I was immediately pulled into her vocals and performance. The vulnerability of the lyrics and the strength of her voice was a compelling combination that mesmerized me. So much so that I immediately came to YouTube to find the song and listen again. For me, this was one of those rare instances when you hear a song for the first time and feel transported outside of yourself and your immediate surroundings. It's often difficult to pinpoint why some songs resonate personally and others don't, but I am just delighted to have experienced it tonight. In fact, this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a comment on YouTube. And with that said, I am done writing and shall return to replaying this video over and over and over again.

  19. W.... K....

  33. M.... W....

Watched her live on Sunday supporting the band in Leeds I went to see. Not my stuff but wow what a voice and the recordings don't come close to her live versions.
She definitely had the attention of a tough crowd that weren't there to see her which is quite unusual for a support, very impressive.

    M.... W....

Spot on Mark, she just did the same tonight in Nottingham, she is amazing live.

  34. C.... B....

    So beautifull

  41. G.... D....

Everytime I hear this song, I imagine it being sung by Dusty Springfield as well. The two ladies have very similar voices and style. I would think that Yola could sing most of Dusty's without fault.

  42. M.... ....

OH MY GOD!!! WHAT A SONG!!!!!!!!

  43. K.... D....

If a great golden eagle was soaring over our lives watching us, this is what she would sound like. This lady and this album are a revelation!! Love you, Yola!!

I just saw Yola at the Newport Folk Festival. I went in with no expectations, and she blew me away. And this song stood out in a strong set list. This is a beautiful homage to the very best of late '60s pop. Terrific song, fantastic vocal, and what sounds like all real instruments. I feel the hair on my neck standing up.

  56. A.... C....

    Amazing chorus! CHILLS

  57. L.... O....

If not for Public Radio (WFUV) would have never heard this song or artist.....

  60. F.... ....

I heard this on Kcrw this morning and I thought it was a 60s song and a man singing. This song is Awesome”It posesses a Phil Specter production quality to it and also reminds me of To Sir With Love by Lulu 🌝

  61. v.... ....

There's something really refreshing about this retro-sounding song. It doesn't sound forcefully retro, if it makes sense. I also love the imagery of the music video following the girl through 1970's and beyond as she grows older. In terms of the musical arrangement, this has a combination of Baroque pop, Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds and of those early 1970s big productions that a Neil Diamond song would have had in 1972, as well as the Wall Of Sound approach. Why I think it sounds so good is because our ears are tired of the same old, the tried and true formula of today's pop music; and this is something different. I really enjoy Yola's unique blend of American Country and "oldies" pop, and her voice is amazing. I recommend listening to other songs as well, to hear what I mean.

Some things I noticed about this song, aside from the fact that it was arranged and recorded the old-fashioned way, without modern gimmicks:

Bass guitar is played with a pick -- very 1970's
Drums have a noticeable delay, which is not something you hear nowadays, also very 1960's--1970's
Transistor organ, probably a Vox Continental, or a Hammond with stopped Leslie speaker, the sound the defined the 1960's
Prominent french horn. "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, anybody?
Glockenspiel winds, brass, strings, timpani. Lots of different colors. The timpani entrance during the chorus reminded me of "You Got It" by Roy Orbison.
Harpsichord -- the main ingredient of a Baroque pop song.
Use of unison/octaves during chorus when guitar, strings, organ and brass respond back to the singer with the catchy hook.
A chorus of background singers. This reminded me of "The Long And Winding Road" by the Beatles.

    v.... ....

vishnatoon I hear a lot of those things in this piece, but I don’t hear some of them. You lost me on the timpani.

  62. b.... s....
