Yngwie Malmsteen - In The Dead Of Night Wetton Lyrics

Are you one of mine who can sleep with one eye open wide?
Agonizing psychotic solitary hours to decide
Reaching for the light at the slightest noise from the floor
Palms of hands perspire heart goes leaping at a knock from the door.
In the Dead of Night
In the Dead of Night
Rich and powerful ascend complicated bends to be free
To indulge in what they will and jaded thrill or fanstasy
Shuttered windows that belie all stifled cries from within
And prying eyes are blind to proceedings of the kind that begin
In the Dead of Night
In the Dead of Night

There are many great metal covers of classic songs. This, to me, falls short of being great. To be fair to Yngwie he had stated in an interview in the late eighties that one guitar solo that 'scared' him was Allan Holdsworth's solo in this song. I love the kicked up distortion, the vocals are dead on, keyboards are dead on. The problems, to me anyway, that holds this back is the doubling up on the guitar downbeats halfway through the versus. It sounds 'off' and somewhat chaotic. The second problem is the guitar solo in the original song is iconic. Holdsworth played his guitar as if it was a sax. To achieve the soft attacks and decays he would use a tapping technique. Yngwie nails the first part of the solo and then it just sounds like a mess. A brilliant mess, to be sure, but his neo-classical arpeggio sweeps don't fit this song at all. Good, not great.

    For what it's worth.

I do not get tired to write it: your interpretations of any songs are almost always better than the original!
