Yes - Angkor Wat Lyrics

Out of the brightest tree the moon became the morning sun,
And there again reflected on the dreams of everyone.
Out of the starlight night the telling of all our lives,
And racing faster than the Northwestern World.

Starpoint to signal our endlessness
Starpoint to signal this evermore
Starpoint to compass: We look to the North
To return to the centre: Angkor Wat.

[Cambodian poetry; translation follows]

I am a child of the universe.

I deserve total recognition of this in the light of God.

Being a child of the universe,
I want to live in a world without war
I want to live in a world without starvation
I want to live in a world without pestilence
I want to live in a world of love, peace and harmony

Because I am a child of the universe.

How the heck can Igor Khoroshev be a co-writer on this? He wasn't even in the band yet and wouldn't appear on an album for another six years.

Im from the 90s I love this vibe from the 60s, 70s, and 80s but what yes did here was crazy unique

I wonder what the 12th century Cambodians would think of this song. I think they'd dig it.

One of my favorite tracks. When I heard it, I thought to myself what difference does it make that I can't understand what she is saying. Her voice adds to the atmosphere. Over the years, curiosity tickled a bit. I heard it was Cambodian. OK. I don't know Cambodian. Sure sounds pretty, though. Then some website says it is a Cambodian poem. All right. OK. By which Cambodian poet? Who can hold it against a guy for wanting a little peek behind the curtain? So then I find out that the language in Cambodia is Khmer. So now it is a Cambodian poem in Khmer. So is it a Cambodian poem or a Khmer poem? A Cambodian poet or a Khmer poet? So I did what any Yes fan shouldn't do regarding Jon Anderson's lyrics. I mashed the Google button to explore the meaning. I found more than what matters. There are at least 4 different "correct" versions of the poem. None of them make it through google translate to anything close to what is on the record. And a couple sites don't call it a Cambodian poem when they tell the story of its writing, more like Jon made something up and had Pauline Cheng read it in Khmer. Which is fine. But different. So the moral is this. Long before Rick Astley and Youtube, there were people tricked into figuring out Yes lyrics. And I got Jon rolled on this one.

Been to Angkor Wat last year. Lovely. Clever architecture too when looking at the towers from one of the entrances.

I visited Anghor in the 90s while it was still raw and less touristy. I spent well over a week there and also looking at ruins in the countryside as well. I had a private guide that was well versed on everything and well connected. It turned out that he was the nephew of the General located in that area, so I had dinner in his compound.

I have to say that visiting Anghor like that was one of the most profound experiences of my life.

(I'm copying my remarks from the earlier version vzqk50 made a few years back) ... Such an enchanting place... The number of temples is astonishing... And the Cambodian children who frolic all around, trying to sell postcards to visitors, #1 they are beautiful, and it was just amazing to see their ancestors' likenesses carved into the stone.... I'd always thought they were stylized, but when you see the children, they look exactly like these depictions, same face and bone structure. And #2, these same Cambodian children just blew my mind how they could recite all the U.S. Presidents— something I could not do born & raised in America.

The primary temple of the Angkor Was compound, as seen in this video, is filled with mystery with all sorts of passageways and caves, and yes I agree 1manuscriptman, very profound.  What is sort of sad though is knowing the history of the mighty Cham dynasties 5000 years ago who dominated SE Asia way back when, and to see their descendants living now impoverished and considered "third world"— But again, the spirit of those children was unmistakably strong and confident.

Thank you for your superb videos - the music is timeless, and your visuals simply enhance what I hear. As an artist, myself, these videos take me places where I don't typically go on my own, so the door opens and my creativity blossoms.

I've been creating a series of masks, and this video has inspired something that's been tickling at the back of my mind for a long while. Just.........................................wow...........................................
