XTC - Wrapped In Grey Lyrics

Some folks see the world as a stone
Concrete daubed in dull monotone
Your heart is the big box of paints
And others, the canvas we're dealt
Your heart is the big box of paints
How coloured the flowers all smelled
As they huddled there, in petalled prayer
They told me this, as I knelt there
Awaken you dreamers
Adrift in your beds
Balloons and streamers
Decorate the inside of your heads
Please let some out
Do it today
But don't let the loveless ones sell you
A world wrapped in grey
Some folks pull this life like a weight
Drab and dragging dreams made of slate
Your heart is the big box of paints
And others, the canvas we're dealt
Your heart is the big box of paints
Just think how the old masters felt, they call...
Awaken you dreamers
Asleep at your desks
Parrots and lemurs
Populate your unconscious grotesques
Please let some out
Do it today
Don't let the loveless ones sell you
A world wrapped in grey
And in the very least you can
Stand up naked and
Grin

  14. A.... P....

Admittedly very Beachboyish... but a masterpiece nonetheless!

    A.... P....

Pale and Precious, now that was Beachboyish. I don't get that vibe from this, more Burt Bacharach-ish.

  15. D.... M....

    Gorgeous and dreamy.

This is a BEAUTIFUL SONG...... From one of the most underrated, undervalued bands ever! Partridge and Moulding.. up there with Lennon and the one full of shit !! Wonderful

    S.... K....

Full of shit? Really? I suppose you know this first hand. Oh, it’s an opinion based on, what, things you’ve heard? Things you’ve read? There’s enough shit in this world without your feces laced opinions

    a.... ....

Totally agree...this melody has you swept on a real journey over an ancient whiltshire on a breeze...the modulations, key changes, wonderful lyrics dynamic sweeps...it all grabs you and takes you...i get tears at the drop of a hat (i know!) with this song....i would say this is one of Andy's many "Judee Sill monents" where such exquisite ingredients produce exquisite ecstasy... There are many more "JSMs" on apple venus...which is AP perfection imho...come back online soon Andy...got loads to tell you! :-)

  21. M.... S....

    Words to live by.

  22. D.... N....

    Beautiful and sublime.
    🎼🎹🎻🎤🎶❤️

  23. M.... T....

Why they never did and an official release video of this, I'll never know. it's one of XTC's better songs.

    M.... T....

I always thought it was "beat box of pain"!

    M.... T....

    No wonder they wanted out.

    M.... T....

Nah, I remember 1992/93 all too well and this, unfortunately, wouldn't have stood a chance with all the grunge/alternative rock/bland pop that was going down at that time. Even the more commercial songs off Nonsuch didn't have much of a chance either- the mainstream wasn't having any of it.

    M.... T....

They did make an official promo film for this song. Virgin then pulled the plug and it was never seen, much to the chagrin of AP.

    M.... T....

    Because Richard Branson.

  24. s.... ....

    Do it today!

  25. G.... Y....

your heart is a big box of paints if you love xtc

  26. K.... ....

A beautiful sentiment more relevant every day...

  27. M.... B....

Easily one of the best tracks from Nonsuch.

    M.... B....

and it's not often you see a song with ZERO thumbs down!

    M.... B....

It’s bloody hard to choose between them!

  28. S.... K....

Thanks very much for sharing this.

  29. 3.... W....

Beautiful! My favorite line is "Your heart is the big box of paints..." because it reminds of the most beautiful woman I have ever known ;-)

    3.... W....

My wife and I got married to this most beautiful song. A beautiful woman who was sadly taken way too early. I find it particularly hard to play.

  30. C.... H....

    Gorgeous~gorgeous~gorgeous!!

  31. P.... K....

"...and in the very least you can stand up naked and griiiinnnnnn"

    Lyrics to live by.

  32. p.... ....

it has been a great pity that Virgin had withdrawn the release of this single.
I own the cd single that has luckily escaped from being destroyed.
It cost me 750GBP,which is,and will be the most expensive CD I had purchased.

    p.... ....

    I"ve got one too.

    p.... ....

I thought about putting out the $$ to get a copy, one of the most rarest, desirable XTC collectibles!

  33. t.... ....

it doesnt get better than this...
