XTC - Vanishing Girl Lyrics
Someone's knocking in the Distance
But I'm deaf and blind
She's not expected home this evening
So I leave the world behind
for the
Yes she'd give you a twirl
But she vanishes from my world
So burn my letters and you'd better leave
Just one pint a day
The whole street's talking about my
White shirts looking so grey
People gossip on the doorstep
Think they know the score
She's giving him the runaround
The man from number four
a
Yes she'd give you a twirl
But she vanishes from my world
Yes the paint is peeling and my
Garden is overgrown
I got no enthusiasm to even answer the phone
When she's here it makes up for the time she's
not and it's all forgotten
But when she goes I'm putting on the pose for
the

XTC Vanishing Girl Comments
I want to marry this song.
Psionic Psunspot was so good, it launched Jellyfish's entire career. I LOVE this song.
The band 80.s Britain didnt understand, much like XTC themselves way to mucial for there own commerial good. the average english ear isnt that safisticted on a friday night out
E.I.E.I Owen. Priceless!
The Spinners bass line elevates this song into a whole new level. Pop perfection indeed.
So good...
Remember tripping on this in '87.....sublime.....
大好きな曲です。英語のコメントばかりだけど、日本にもファンはいっぱいいるよね。
I remember the first time I heard this - 4:30Am driving from Palm Springs to Long Beach. KROQ 1987. It made an impression.
I heard in my car, too. On (the many years defunct) KJET AM. On my way to the mall, a year into my first job after high school.

Considering the Swindon connection through Justin Hayward, I'm somewhat surprised not to hear more of of an obvious Moody Blues influence in any of the Duke's songs. Perhaps just a hint of Hayward-era Blues here, though.
The songs XTC put out under this name were amazing. Love it!!
shit do mutants get to choose there. curse or excuse me there special abilities.
This needs a rerelease, if it hasn't gotten one yet. Hard to find in the US.
Heard this playing at the gas station the other day.
Gary Strauss me too and I got hooked
Heard this first on an awesome Friday night radio program called The Big Beat, WXRT Chicago, the great DJ Johnny Mars. Every show was stacked with underground gems.
Has anyone else noticed an uncanny similarity between the verse of this song and the verse of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens?
I subscribed, teaching this to kids
Why does this sound so familiar (especially the intro part)? Recently discovered the song and it's almost like I recognised it from before, even though I have no memory of ever listening to it. Has it been in a movie or tv-show or something?
Depending on how old you are, It got some play on LA radio station KROQ in the late 80's early 90's. So possibly got played elsewhere I'm sure. This was the first Dukes song I heard, before i even knew it was actually XTC, and I'm also a big fan of XTC. And was at the time. Couldn't figure out why they sounded so familiar, but it wasn't XTC, until I learned about the group some years later and bought their CD's
The greatest Hollies song never written.
perfect pop psych makes you really happy!!!!!!
This is a good example of how the listener loses some of the experience the band intended to give. The Alice in Wonderland-like spoken words at the end are to take a listener right into the next track. It’s supposed to serve that purpose, otherwise it seems like just a really odd song ending.
SOMEbody has to have caught the "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" riff at the very beginning....
surely some, but this song has some real chromatics in it.
The Best 60s Psychedelic Song Of The 80s
mother nugget this song is amazing.
I feel invigorated.
where is the girl gone?
Wherever the psychedelic Carrollesque world described amongst all of the albums songs is.
I am a latecomer to XTC, but this is the first Dukes song I have heard. Utterly brilliant. Love it!

This is in the style of the Hollies, who were playing Beatles-style music before the actual Beatles.
It's not possible to play Beatles-style music before the actual Beatles (existed). Just kidding, although I think the Hollies were closer to American "white music" tradition, while the Beatles brought in the black influences since their first songs. Apart from this key difference, the 3-voice harmonies is a common feature
Sounds like the moody blues
This reminds me of being in my early pre-teen years.I love it!
How creative is band when they can write, perform and record two albums as tributes to the rock music of their childhood which subsequently rank amongst the best records of the mid-80s?
Seriously! Even their rejected songs and B-sides are better than most band's best, too, as 'Fuzzy Warbles' and 'Rag and Bone' show!
Svatopluk, I would reply to your question: Very, very creative!
"But she vanishes from my world, so burn my letters and you better leave just one pint a day. The whole street's talking about my white shirts looking so grey."
When she's here she makes up for the time she's not and it's all forgotten
Poetic without being poetic!
Dukes XTC i love these guys
So excited that Andy Partridge has written a new song for the Monkees 50th anniversary album.
I didn't know about that! What's it called? I want to hear it!
Stäni Steinbock "You bring the summer"
Ah! Thanks!
Thanks! Just listened to it, and it sounds very good!
Just wraps itself around your very being..Wonderful....
XTC Got even better as The Dukes of Stratosphere.
Quite possibly the most perfectly performed song of all time. Flawless in execution. I can never hear it too many times.
This is remarkably The Beatles or any pop rock band after aforementioned band broke through.
I can just see David Gilmour singing this for some reason.
Mash it up with Breaking the Law. Please.
the lion sleep tonight
Greatest band ever
Two and a half minutes of pop perfection. A timeless, should-have-been-a-hit classic, probably the best Moulding ever wrote.
@Aryno Wyrth you mean psychedelic rock ?
Regarding this song specifically? No, I mean exactly what I wrote.
MorpheusVector, this song is 60’s BritPop in the same vein as the Beatles, Kinks, Hollies, and Herman’s Hermits. There’s other tracks that the Dukes did that were more psych. Not this one tho.
Not just the Hollies, this album is heavily influenced by the Beatles in particular their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band era. And, if I'm not mistaken, Shiny Cage uses the same guitar verses in "I'm Only Sleeping" off the Revolver album by the Beatles.
@Caleb Robinson It's a pastiche of lots of psychedelic bands. :)
And don't forget references to the Beach Boys on "Pale and Precious".
This song in particular has Strawberry Alarm Clock all over it.
The Kinks in You're a Good Man Albert Brown (Curse You Red Barrel)
Imagine if you could get Graham Nash to cover this...
strawberry alarm clock?
If I had never heard Andy Partridge's voice and you told me this was released in 1966 I would have thought, "What a gem! How come this song wasn't a hit?".
This is the equivalent, in '60's psychedelic Brit Pop. to the Stray Cats for '50's American Rock and Roll. Absolutely brilliant.
Pretty sure this is Colin singing, he wrote the song.
@Kimmo Paasiala Then his then.
+Kimmo Paasiala--It is Colin singing lead, but you can hear Andy's harmony all over this, as well! :)
They sang dual lead vocal.
We’re arguing about nothing. Lol
The Hollies
This is very much like the Hollies.
What difference does it make how may bands they sound like. They're awesome
Et Tu? Way cool....I love it when I have to play a song 20 times...haha. Awesome.
Played this TO DEATH when it came out. SO good. Oh, man.
Hollies tribute by the brilliant XTC
