XTC - This Is Pop? Lyrics
In a milk bar and feeling lost
Drinking sodas as cold as frost
Someone leans in m direction
Quizzing on my juke-box selection
What do you call that noise
This is pop
Yeah Yeah
This is!
On a walkway and moving fast
All I get is transistor blast
Someone leans in my direction
Quizzing on my station selection
That you put on?
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is!
We come the wrong way
We come the long way
We play the songs much too loud
This is pop
Yeah yeah

XTC This Is Pop? Comments
tHIS BAND will never be satisfied by his technique or his playing skills. It always seemed to
him less than his ambition as his ideal, if he works hard, the result inevitably disappoints him. Everything he plays frustrates him, it has always seemed to him that he could do better "better to see"
So he clearly had a haircut half way thru the filming of this.
One of the first things I heard by them...and I was totally hooked and have been ever since. This really REALLY is POP.
INXS entire first album is seemingly derived from this song. Not a bad thing.
Possibly their best video ever in their history of b grade videos. 😄
REM meets Sting plus Talking Heads
R... E... Who?
..*!*..
Awesome, I always wanted to see what Andy Partridges tonsils looked like.
I can't cite the exact sounds that leads me to this comparison, but I'll be damned if Duran Duran didn't hear this and borrow from it for their Rio album!
There are some sound textures... particularly the bass, I think.
@Agent 1110 I think that Drone, Drone lifted their sound directly from Japan's 'Quiet life' album and Mick Karn's bass playing in particular. Although John Taylor was nowhere near as good a player as Karn, who was probably the best fretless bass player ever. (RIP.) John would be the first to testify to that btw. x
Rio is a great track btw. Especially the intro, which really does justice to their influences.
Good example of music that has aged TERRIBLY
You’re not very good at picking examples.
This is an example of where I mightily approve of and recommend the video. Just to really rub in the message.
I particularly like the slicing off of the record chops.
top pop back in the day - total XTC - ahem - if you will excuse the pun...
The best band since, well bands were invented. More music than your tiny brain can consume.
Love it.......

Not a very nice looking place to shop
The BBC cock blocked them just like Heaven 17 due to there political views. here is my view of the BBC, YOU CAN GO AND GET FUKT with your dodgy sickos's, no wonder half of the bbc team jumped ship to the other side. now then now then!

Still love this. I just heard a band called Dinner Time on Spotify...the song is called Walden Park. Reminiscent of XTC, Clash, Stereophonics, Blur & the Sex Pistols...enough that I wanted to hear this song again...give them a listen and maybe a bit of a boost...good to help encourage new young musicians.
Tossing white label test pressings worth $100 a slab to collector scum, ha ha!!!!!
Baby Andy......
I haven't heard this tune in ages.
And like some other great tunes from back in the day, it still rings true.
can't believe XTC invented music!!!!!!! they exposed the pop music, hit-single producing industry so good
All these years and this still blows up in your face. XTC was great.
this is fantastic.

Jesus Christ I guess Barry needed some baked beans! 😂
He dropped one and pushed it out of camera view with his foot.
One of the most shamefully underrated bands of all time.
I don't think they've been underrated; I think they've been underexposed. I only heard of XTC this last year, and I'm 40 years old.
underrated? everyone i ever talked to that has heard of XTC loves them

ernestoferreri I just started reading "Complicated Game" and Andy talks about the HDNightiness of the song.

I love this song and Andy is SO ADORABLE!
Unlike any other. Still avant-garde after all these years...
Great song by a great band. I won this 45 in a radio contest, along with a bunch of other stuff, including free pizza at Conan's in Austin TX. Then tickets to their show. I was in heaven.
haha! that's great- i used to park in the Conan's parking lot on the drag to whenever we went to the punk club Raul's next door to Conan's! good times in that parking lot too..
I hung out at Raul's too. Standing waves, the Skunks, The Explosives, Big Boys, The Dicks. Damn good old days.
love all those bands! If you saw Standing Waves that was me Haha! keys..
I love Standing Waves, great band, so yes I saw you. I still have some 45's.
no Sharon Tates Baby?
I can do nearly a complete dental exam on Andy Partridge thanks to this video. That’s a pretty significant lower right molar filling.
Lol...Can’t believe how long ago this was. I miss punk.
same. Seems like last week. everything about music was so exciting! every week some great new band..
But this is pop.
yer i was just thinking the same....not punk at all....XTC is obviously better than all punk :P
Andy P looks 15!
He's 23, by my reckoning. Father time is a right bastard...
Ain't it the truth! And those meds he takes are no youthifier!
He’s still cute I must say. :)

Hell yeah
Swindon you say?
Without a doubt, one of the most underestimated bands ever. Genius.
Fantastic!
Vocals don't sound hilariously dated at all.
Bob Townsend you're right, they still sound awesome.
Bob Townsend I like that unique squeak Andy put in this. He definitely used his voice as an instrument.
He could enunciate any sound - truly a great lyricist and vocalist. I especially appreciate Towers of London for this.
Love this, they are still one of the most original bands ever!
I remember this from the seventies. A great band. Sounds even better on vinyl. Great punchy sound.
