XTC - Standing In For Joe Lyrics

I'm standing, standing in for Joe

Joe called round to ask me, Would I do a favour?
While he's gonna be out of town
He says his girl needs company, she gets so restless
Would I keep her safe and sound?
Softly, softly in the night
Why, you can guess the rest...
Now these shoes fit all too well
Standing in for Joe
Standing in for Joe
I'm standing - in for Joe

Joe said we've been friends so long
That I would be the one he would trust with his life
And now those words roll 'round my brain
As darkness falls, as I turn out his bedroom light
Who could resist her tender charms?
So the story goes...
This actor he plays all the parts
Standing in for Joe
Standing in for Joe
I'm standing - in for Joe

Love is like a river,
You cannot stop its flow... Mmm hmm

Joe called round to ask me, Would I do a favour?
While he's gonna be out of town
He says his girl needs company, she gets so restless
Would I check that she's safe and sound?
Softly, softly in the night
Why, you can guess the rest...
Now these shoes fit all too well
Standing in for Joe
I'm standing in for Joe - Oh yeah
I'm standing in for Joe - Keep his sweetheart company, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Just standing in for Joe, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Until he gets back home, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Gonna keep her insane, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Gonna keep her safe and sound, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Keep his sweetheart company, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Almost full time, which is nice, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Because she gets so restless
Standing in for Joe - Always so restless
Standing in for Joe - Keep his sweetheart company, yeah
Standing in for Joe - Gonna keep her safe and sound, yeah
Standing in for Joe - I'm standing in for Joe, yeah...

IT IS A RIP OFF OF BARRYTOWN BY STEELY DAN!!! The vocal melody is

    J.... ....

Interesting observation. It's really just the first two bars of the melody that are clearly the same, but that's no small thing. In the music industry, a genuine ripoff means litigation, but I tend to think that a lawsuit wouldn't hold up in this case based on the contrasting grooves.

Both Steely Dan and XTC were great bands, and both have already won my respect. Also, this melodic similarity could be an example of the phenomenon Paul McCartney experienced while writing and producing "Yesterday," during which time he was acutely worried that he had accidentally stolen the melody -- though he couldn't think from where he'd gotten it.

I'll stumble into this myself occasionally just noodling on the guitar. Was that my original? It sounds familiar, but I can't place it. _Aaaaahhh!_ Ultimately, we're all standing on the shoulders of giants, and nothing is truly 100 percent original. The key is to process one's artistic influences _fully_, thereby making the resulting work one's own. T.S. Eliot wrote about this with his "great poets steal" observation (that's a paraphrase).

    I agree. Hey, Colin...

  8. F.... ....

The playlist says Vol 1, but a lot of these songs are on Vol 2. Just FYI

  9. J.... S....

All of the tracks on this album really do take me back to the year 2000.  A really brilliant album as well.  All of you have to agree.

    J.... S....

@Jonathan Simmons more like back to mid 60s pop, updated in a brilliant way.

Humm Bet the next song for the friend standing in for Joe was Stupidly Happy. Hee hee. That was a very stupid thing to request. Yep. Not smart at all. Great melody and 'better think before you make the same mistake.' Oh just a lovely fun song for sure. Now I click to 'Stupidly Happy' one of my all time fave's. 5*'s to our infinity. Oh YEH!! :-)

@ArbeiterInnenlieder Actually Colin kind of owes to Steely's Barrytown but that mighty Dan's song is The Beatles' Tell Me What You See after all! Right? Re-listen and come back :))) an XTC fan

  18. M.... B....

Excellent, vraiment XTC sont des pros !

  19. K.... B....

Normally it's XTC who get plagiarised all the way.

  21. K.... B....

    @Stube437:
It's maybe their biggest blatant plagiarism. Usually the don't do that. Nevertheless I love this song ditty to bits.

  22. K.... B....

    @Stube437: It does!

  23. K.... B....
