XTC - No Language In Our Lungs Lyrics

There is no language in our lungs
to tell the world just how we feel
no bridge of thought
no mental link
no letting out just what you think
there is no language in our lungs
there is no muscle in our tongues
to tell the world what's in our hearts
no we're leaving nothing
just chiselled stones
no chance to speak before we're bones
there is no muscle in our tongues
I thought I had the whole world in my mouth
I thought I could say what I wanted to say
For a second that thought became a sword in my hand
I could slay any problem that would stand in my way
I felt just like a crusader
lionheart, a holy land invader
but nobody can say what they really mean to say and
the impotency of speech came up and hit me that day and
I would have made this instrumental
but the words got in the way
there is no language in our...
there is no language in our lungs
to tell the world what's in our hearts
no we're leaving nothing behind
just chiselled stones
no chance to speak before we're bones
there is no language in our lungs.

Andy Partridge is on record as saying that the music for “No Language In Our Lungs” was influenced by the band Free (whom everyone in XTC loved). He has said that this song has a Free type tempo with a “stately feel” and proceeds with a “measured pace”. It’s in the key of B which is a key Free used to play a lot of their stuff in. And Andy has also said that Dave’s guitar parts on this track were influenced by “Mr. Big” by Free.

There is no language in our lungs
To tell the world just how we feel
No, no, no, no, no, no bridge of thought
    No mental link
No letting out just what you think

    [Chorus]
There is no language in our lungs
    Lungs, lungs, lungs

    [Verse 2]
There is no muscle in our tongues
To tell the world what's in our hearts
No, no, no, no, no, we're leaving nothing behind
    Just chiseled stones
No chance to speak before we're bones

    [Chorus]
There is no muscle in our tongues
    Tongues, tongues, tongues

    [Instrumental break]

    [Bridge]
I thought I had the whole world in my mouth
I thought I could say what I wanted to say
For a second, that thought became a sword in my hand
I could slay any problem that would stand in my way
I felt just like a crusader
    Lionheart, a Holy Land invader
But nobody can say what they really mean to say
And the impotency of speech came up and hit me that day
And I would have made this instrumental
But the words got in the way

  29. w.... ....

One of the best songs of the 20th century. Come at me, I WILL FIGHT YOU :)

  30. r.... ....

Steve Lillywhite produced some awesome  albums in the 1980's and 1990's by XTC, the La's, Big Country , U2,  and the Thompson Twins to name a few

  31. J.... P....

A great and timeless band and album. I was wondering which way I was going to go musically in the early 80's and this album helped to guide me. Epic guitar playing and chord progressions and lyrics. I love the way in some songs, the tonality shifts in different and unique directions. The drums are also epic. Thanks XTC for everything. www.jamiepalumbo.com

  32. T.... T....

19 people have no taste in their souls...

    T.... T....

    then they bred; ewwwwwwwww

  40. M.... O....

50 yrs of age and this track still gives me goosebumps

    M.... O....

Same here, XTC, what a band! Geniuses.

    M.... O....

    Mark Ottewell exactly!

    M.... O....

If you never saw the way this song was used in an episode of Freaks and Geeks, seek it out.

  41. p.... ....

Great to see so much love for one of my favourite bands. This is a top top song from a top top album.

  42. S.... F....

Freaks and geeks! Awesome song, Xtc rules since 1980...

  43. T.... F....

For some reason this cut has a problem with the lead guitar's volume, which is a shame as nearly half of the artistry in this song is in those soaring riffs.

    T.... F....

There's an excellent remaster up now with hardly any views. Criminal really. Sounds amazing!

    T.... F....

Not really a problem...you can hear Colin's awesome bass playing a little better!

  44. A.... F....

this track reminds me of what it's like to be the last to get picked

    A.... F....

    Abel Forester hahaha

    A.... F....

    b.... r....

    oh yeah

    b.... r....

Yes, I don't know why people don't get it.

  50. M.... O....

Who the fuck else would come up with such lyrics? So underrated it's a crime !

    M.... O....

agreed. got into them through a local radio station and my brother. so glad they are part of my life. in any HOF?

    M.... O....

They probably were the most underrated band ever. In every way possible. Tremendous song writing, tremendous musicianship, tremendous performances both in the studio and live. They are really on a beetles level which you really can't say about most if any other bands.

  51. N.... F....

    Freaks and geeks <3

    N.... F....

I mean, I liked XTC --but never knew this one. I've been Shazaming a ton as I watch. Lots of gems. This was awesome to stumble upon. The baseball PE ep

  52. R.... N....

I'm struck by how "current" this song feels. Ahead of its time. I could believe this came out in 2014.

    R.... N....

    2014 lol

  53. x.... ....

Massive sound & what a gem of a track.

  54. M.... L....

N.S.A. knows Andy Partridge: he's a dirty counter-intelligence operative for the People's Republic of China. Traitor to the U.S.A. and possibly the U.K. Former MI5. Ice for blood.

    M.... L....

What the hell are you talking about? I mean I'm not sure if you're serious or if your brain is stroking out and this is the gibberish it's releasing. But please, by all means, if you are serious, where are your sources? If they involve a friend of a friend of your cousin's landlord, the voices in your head or our reptilian, Illuminati overlords, you're probably wrong.

    M.... L....

sorry for your trouble my dad goes on my account all the time

    M.... L....

    @Fives Ademon.
He was and is brilliant and another example of an educated, subculture Englishman who works politics and language....sadly just remembered as talented but with so much to say and make us consider, re. politics, but because of that, is considered 'problematic'

    M.... L....

@Maria LPS your father is correct

  55. C.... ....

I repeat, THE best song of all time........

    C.... ....

+CONSIDERABLYMORE1 Maybe not the greatest song of all time but extremely excellent

    C.... ....

would make my short list. often listen to rocket in a bottle and this, just seems so perfect.

    C.... ....

YEP.....THIS IS ONE OF THEIR BEST SONGS

    C.... ....

    Certainly one of them.

    C.... ....

    Yes. THE BEST.

  56. B.... E....

    best steampunk album ever 2013

    of grand designs

  57. G.... S....

    Freaks and Geeks

  58. w.... ....

This band is fucking amazing. Off to listen to Skylarking for the umpteenth time...

  59. D.... ....

And anyone that may disagree with your statement is quite possible a complete and utter idiot...

  60. O.... ....

X-T-C ...but I'm sure they were leaning toward the latter :o)

  61. C.... ....

@Liam Jennings I'm not sure that's exclusive to aspergers syndrome, unless I have it and had no idea. Many eastern cultures show a mistrust in words having the capability to accurately portray emotions and thoughts.
Nice first name by the way, I have the same.

  62. C.... ....

@Joe doolittle I prefer to pronounce it letter by letter. Not entirely separate, but not a single flowing word.

  63. J.... D....

I'm new to this band. Is it pronounced X-T-C or Ecstasy?

  64. L.... J....

Hmmmmm..... I don't think I have ever heard a more accurate description of the ABSOLUTE frustration that every Aspergers person suffers when they try put their emotions into words.?? We feel so much in our hearts, but when we try to tell our loved ones about it.... there IS..... no language in our lungs.
Thank you XTC.... you nailed it, as usual! ;-D

  65. F.... ....

    monk tune right here

  66. s.... ....

This song was used perfectly in an episode of Freaks and Geeks... the most underrated TV show of all time.

    s.... ....

    Definitely

  67. 1.... ....

I would have made this song and instrumental, but the words got in the way

  68. R.... C....

    Fuckin awesome !

  69. E.... S....

Nibiru is coming! Nirubi is coming!

    it's 2012

    @kyuss50myt
Enjoy the journey..Its a great one...great song after great song..

  71. A.... T....

The Beatles would love this band, I wonder if Paul and George listened to them?

  72. A.... T....

I prefer the live version, but then again who doesn't?

  73. s.... ....

@rednexRC Never heard of that band-friends of yours?

  74. S.... B....

Wow. I Just Stumbled On This Song Thru The Show Freaks And Geeks... This Song Is So Awesome. I Can Here Where Incubus, Ween, And Sublime May Have Found Influence. This Song If A Masterpiece. I'm About To Check Some Other Tunes out But I'm Worried Nothing Will Match Up To This...

    S.... B....

Sean Booth This whole album is great.

  75. D.... S....

    @OpenVault
Respectable Street, Rocks!! Great album. This and English Settlement were strong albums at this stage.

  76. U.... ....

@ganstamannirvana93 HAHAHAHAH When they were choosing teams for softball and Bill was picked after Gordon Crisp lol

  77. r.... ....

@asxtc Watchu talkin'? Black Sea is filled with gems!

  78. t.... ....

    Great stuff!

  79. f.... ....

I hate getting picked last for baseball

  80. J.... R....

also heard it on freaks and geeks and i fucking love it..

  81. r.... ....

@GilmoreGirlz I Know What You Mean This Song Totally Makes Me Lose All Ability To Use The English Language Correctly Lol

  82. N.... ....

This sounds so wonderfully Beatlesque to me without sounding derivative in any way. Black Sea is a masterpiece! Cheers from California

  83. f.... ....

    What about Travels in Nihilon?
Let there be drums! (and rain)

  84. N.... B....

Why don't you posters put the lyrics on the More info?? Would be so great. HINT HINT!! This is a fantastic group and band. Sharred by a beautiful friend, I thank them for such a gift. : -) I agree their message is for today, they were Way ahead of their time. They have an unbelievably wonderful sound, and the energy is magnetic. : -)))

  85. i.... ....

I like it how he does, it's almost mocking the popular music the public digest thoughtlessly.

  86. a.... ....

He does it quite often..."this is the middle of the song"...

  87. a.... ....

    I'm gonna cry...you didn't mention the best album ever....Drums & Wires...or Waspstar.

  88. A.... N....

Thank you OpenVault for bringing us precious gems!!!

  89. w.... m....

I suppose only diehard XTC fans will read this anyway, so here goes: I think Andy's lyrics, no matter what style he chooses, are among the very best. There are WAY too many examples but in this song, at the end of the bridge: "...I would've made this instrumental but the words got in the way!" I've never heard a songwriter break the proverbial "4th Wall" with such cleverness and magic!

  90. D.... D....

This whole CD was classic. I had it on Vinyl, when it first came out. Incredible songs, all of them.

  91. M.... B....

I find it comical how some people hated "Generals & Majors". I still think it's a rather catchy tune with a valid message that isn't soooo preachy. It makes a point and it's still accessible. "Black Sea" is one of my Top 5 fave XTC albums. It changes from time to time ,but, my other current fave XTC CD's, in no particular order, are: "English Settlement" , "Skylarking" , " Apple Venus Vol. 1 " and "Chips From the Chocolate Fireball"

  92. l.... ....

    it's all about black sea!

  93. a.... ....

This track saved Black Sea from a fate worse than Living through another Cuba.

  94. a.... e....

one of my favorites from that era. genius. thank you.
