XTC - Living Through Another Cuba Lyrics
Living through another Cuba
it's 1961 again and we are piggy in the middle
while war is polishing his drum and peace plays second fiddle
Russia and America are at each other's throats
just on your knees and pray, and while you're
down there, kiss your arse goodbye
We're the bulldog on the fence
while others play their tennis overhead
it's hardly love all and somebody might
wind up red or dead
pour some oil on the water quick
it doesn't really matter where from
he love me, he loves me not
This phenomenon happens every 20 years or so
if they're not careful your watch won't be the
only thing with a radioactive glow
I'll stick my fingers in my ears
and hope they make it up before too late
if we get through this lot alright
they're due for replay, 1998

And yet, here we are...again and again.
Hope against hope (probably hopeless by now) that Putin ain't too smart for us to arraign his finger puppet, Trumpface.

The Cuban Crisis was one big reason my family fled Down Under in 1962. I was 8, but only now at 65 fully appreciating how freaked out/brave our ma and pa must have been.

I always thought this song could just as easily have been "Living through Another Coup!"
they really should have been played on radio more back then
My teacher mr novotony from West Florida High School in Pensacola Florida assigned me this shit ass song.
Just Looking Through The 'Cubard ' For The 'Sneezing Powder' (Pepper)!!!! Not Too Much In One Go!!!! Phew!!!! GREATEST BAND AND GREAT SONG. LEGENDS.
The Godfathers of Brit Pop
音量を大きくすれば、彼らがどれだけアバンギャルドかわかります

I see. I heard that Cuba was on the immediate side of the UK
"get the bulldog to put its teeth back in". Quality.
Lyrical genius. Bad ass band!
That makes more sense than how I heard it, as "Get the Bulldog, the police chief packing"
In their play list.. Brilliant!
This song goes hard.
This record has no filler!
swindons finest awesome tune bought this on 7inch ep an old jukebox single in 81 cheap sadly stolen along with all my vinyl collection

Totally and unequivocally awesome!!!!!!!
スペアザのaimsはこの曲をサンプリングしてたりするのかな
What a 👍 track. Steve Lillywhite capturing perfect drum sound. Was at Hollywood Paladium show when Andy broke down.Romeo Void opened. No XTC. 😥
LIVING THRU ANOTHER CUBA!!
0:00 The beginning is avant garde
"This phenomenon happens
Every 20 years or so"
"If we get through this lot alright
They're due for replay, 1998"
And here we are in Trump's 2018
I know things are finally looking up eh? we really dodged a bullet in 2016. Keeping those warmongers at bay.
Getting the bulldog to put his teeth back in ... sheer sardonic eloquence
Ah yes that new wave stereo chorus flanger..
Donald and Kim brought me here.
またキューバ危機がやってきた
Get on your knees and pray and while you're down there kiss your ass goodbye... it's 1961 again and we are piggy in the middle...
Hey! "Cuba" happened in 1962, not 1961.
Andy Partridge has acknowledged that he made a historical error in the lyric - see http://chalkhills.org/articles/XTCFans20091108.html
Funny, it is 2018 and here we go again living through another Cuba with North Korea and Trump seeing who has the biggest nuclear button. Andy was spot on.
If you think today’s general situation matches up with the missile crisis of ‘62 you’re severely uninformed.
But Putin and Trump are trying their best these days...
Leslie. Severely uninformed as to what it was like living through the Cold War. Or such flippant comments wouldn't be made. You may not remember how mind blowing it was when the Berlin Wall came down. NK improving thank god. But the xenophobia towards the Russian people (they have very weak military & weaker still economy) is what's stupidly pushing us BACK to a Cold War. people are easily manipulated in this information age.
This comment didn't age well lol.
Astonishingly brilliant.
I remember laughing so hard when Fidel kicked the tires on the first jet hijacked to Havana.
They're due for replay, 2017
ya curious how that all works? i don't proclaim recognition its just an age mojo
it's 20 years after "1998" and Russia has hacked the US elections
keep the conspiracy theories & msm talking points away from one place on YouTube please.
Sad to say that this song has never been so true as now :(
Didn't "Desert Storm" happen in 1998?
Wrong. get a grip
頭から離れない
The song, and the entire album is brilliant.
The album's got not a single duff song on it, all belters
still have the vinyl . . . :)
VIVA CUBA !!!!!
Fidel Castro's death brought me here
"Although quite controversial..."
Steve LILLYWHITE is the best producer of the eighties without a doubt
Yes he was!
Also was married to Kirsty MacColl. I had no idea!
YEP....he produced some great albums by XTC, the La's, Big Country P. Furs, U2, and the Thompson Twins to name a few
IM(not so)HO Black Sea is their best album. Brilliant tunes, pin-sharp lyrics, every track as tight as a drum.
Kinda me minds me of 2016.. History never remembers.
2016 was the BEST! except for Bowie.
TERRY CHAMBERS is such an awesome drummer!!!!!!
+Joseph Bruno
And once he got a Rototom, he took his drumming to the next level!
The more I listen to this track, the more I realise it's the drumming that keeps it all so *tight*.
Such a shame he didnt stay longer, could you imagine his drumming on future albums?
The drumming is 🔥
@Faint Sounds His style wouldn't have suited it and he left partly because he knew that
いい曲!
love this album
dated but what a song
Is a bit dated as Cuba is no longer considered a crisis
Are you familiar with the use of "Cuba" as a metaphor? "Cuba" was used as a metaphor in this song for what was going on in Europe at the time.
Do explain.
With Thatcher and Reagan the Cold War heated up again. Europe, particularly W. Germany, feared that it would be the nuclear battleground in a nucler war (another Cuba). Tensions between the US and USSR were heightened by the Russians in Afghanistan and American funding of groups in Afghanistan (by the Carter administration) that would eventually morph into al-Queda.
Yes of course, that's what the song is all about: US-Russia/USSR tensions, for which Cuba stands.
Wow, what an excellent bit of bouncy interesting energy! First listen. In such a good mood. Thx seargentrock, and XTC!
Great song, but I don't think Andy Partridge knew (at least back then) that "the Bull Dog" was actually working with Vatican (and later Israel ... after they created Israel with "The Balfour Declaration of 1917") to orchestrate everything coming to head today, since Albert Pike first spelled it all out with Giuseppe Mazzini in 1871. (the 3 World Wars).
Just a great song all the way around, high energy, the drumming is brilliant!
Yep.....Terry Chambers drumming is outstanding on this song.....probably his best work as the drummer of XTC
new wave

Great drumming, I wish I could go to a club and some of this!
ME GUSTA MUCHO ESTA CANCIÓN, ME RECUERDA MI ADOLESCENCIA.
Thanx for this. I'm on an XTC tear, and I heard this on the live Rockpalast set from 1982, and forgot how totally killer this track was. It used to cause commotions on the dancefloor at the "modern rock" all ages danceclub I frequented as a teenager back in 1984. This song always reminds me of "It's Nearly Africa" in terms of the propulsive drums and frenetic energy. Andy Partridge has this way of using his vocals almost like a percussion instrument with all his yelps and yowls and crazed sub-verbal scatting. This song also came out when using African rhythms/Burundi beat a la Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow, and dub/ska as a backbeat for post-punk like The Police, and the Clash was de rigueur. Wow--what an amazing time for music that was. Makes me nostalgic, and really glad for YouTube!!!
Muy interesante tu comentario
Insightful comment, history repeating methinks
Yes, Indeedy! You have fallen under Partsy's amazing musical SPELL! WHOOOOOOO!!!!
