XTC - Burning With Optimism's Flames Lyrics
Never seen her glowing
all that bright she's throwing
like some aurora
from her head it's growing
reaching to the ground and all around
Never heard her singing
now she's gently ringing
like copper wind chimes
what on earth is bringing up this stream
the cat who got the cream is licking her lips
and smiling like her Cheshire cousin
She claims she's found a way to make her own light
all you do is smile, you banish the night
she says she's burning up all her guilts and shames, away away
she says she's burning with optimism's flames, away away
she says she's burning up
Now you see I'm smiling
back to juvenile'ing
I learnt her lesson
in like flint and styling
all the world is neatly curled around my littlest finger
I can't stop this grinning
so assume I'm winning
threw pessimism
in the air it's spinning
crashing to the floor and nevermore
will it lure me away with sweets
and shiny things just like a magpie
Now every bird and bee just fuel the fire for me
now every closing door just fans the flames some more
(Now I'm thinking okay)
(I'm turning night into day)

Faction paradox anyone?
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, yes yes yes yes yes yes yessssssss
happy to say I saw them live :) and they were, as you'd expect amazing!
0:00- Jazz, XTC style
So fantastic! Andy Partridge is incomprehensibly amazing.
Gads do I miss this band.
Black Sea is totally under-rated!
From that era it's one of the 5 Albums I'd have on that "lost on a desert Island" scenario along with The Police' Regatta de Blanc, Blondie's Parallel Lines, The Pretenders self titled 1st Album and The Stranglers La Folie...that Solar Powered Turn-Table would see a lot of action!
Everything works here
my favorite
SMART , SNAP , INTELLIGENT , SWEET!
This cut was right there while the radio was playing "My Sharona" and "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" (both good songs).
This one is for you Amalia.Keep the flame 🔥and stay 🔥 don't sell out. Go visit 🇬🇧. ✌
The first XTC album I heard. Great song.
Bare naked ladies anyone??
You mean Barenaked Lades learned a lot from these guys?
This is from 1980 clown.
No shit,dick-wad....my point was their influence on later bands.
XTC does not sound like anyone else that i have heard of! Oh hang on, YES, they sound like the Dukes of Strat!!
Sounds newer now than it did back then
The most underrated song ever, by the most underrated Band of all time. They were cranking out this type of music in the late 70's, while we were radio-served Loverboy and other tired styles.
I knew the end was near for XTC when their drummer left the band....they were never the same.
Checkout the drumming performance on this song....never heard such sound from a percussion/drummer.
Wow, do I miss the old 'New Wave' and 'Punk Bands' from the late 70's - mid 80's
@David Ellis The CURE rules Heaven and Earth.
I have to say that I think they just got better and better no matter the members of the band. Andy Partridge is the reason why. That said, I think that Terry Chambers was great. Check out Apple Venus.
I mean, he's a great drummer, but gosh !! It's not like Im listening to Skylarking or English Settlement going, Ok, but there's just something so missing here
@David Ellis 💙
Dave Gregory the most underrated rock monster on history!!!
Yes! Dave Gregory, along with Jimmy Page, made me want to learn how to play the guitar.
Andy's no slouch on the guitar.
YES!
XTC had two really fantastic lead/rhythm guitarists. I never knew who played what and when. Often i like to know. I imagine Dave was the lead mostly and played all the licks. If you watch the 1986 studio concerts, thats Andy and Colin strumming on Scarecrow People and Dave playin lead.
On acoustic.
Ultimately it doesnt matter, these were 4 amazingly talented fellows who were in the same fantastic band together.
Love how "Optimism's Flame" blends into "Sgt Rock" with that thunderous drum intro.
Still stuns me 35 yrs later.
Although "Drums & Wires" was the more celebrated album, this one - Black Sea - is one of my favourite Rock Albums of all time!
What the hell, this band is so awesome, and totally never heard enough of them state side.
All I hear ir vibrant energy amongst friends.
YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE IT.
A vocal-word-syntax masterpiece.
You have to admit it. This is Steve Lillywhite's production in all it's LIVE STONE DRUM ROOM WITH GATED MIC'S ALL OVER THE PLACE GLORY! It still sounds great! It isn't "dated" in the least! Terry, you keep "just hitting 'em'."
Lillywhite did awesome work with this band & yeah those DRUMS! Terry Chambers really hits HARD. love it!
I was watching a documentary a couple months ago and Stewart Copeland was saying exactly that when discussing Chambers drum play. What a tour...XTC and The Police? Get the hell out of here!
Hugh Padgham’s engineering has to get a nod as well. He likes his noise gates.
This is a great example of what I like about XTC, fantastic energy. Great melodies.
this was their peak for that
why can't I do this for karaoke!
Songs that put a smile on my face number 1.
Who is the Senator's DJ on the campaign trail?
I have to be really selective when it comes to XTC. They've got so many great, inventive and thought-provoking songs in their repertoire, that it would be unfair to include them all. But this song, with its drive, cross rhythms and deconstruction is, well, optimistic. Which can't be too bad, really.
Andy Partridge is a frenetic genius. :)
well said
my favourite xtc track - quirky doesn't even begin to describe it!
Not "quirky," but it still makes me laugh.
