XTC - All Along The Watchtower Lyrics
There must be some kind of way out of here, said the joker to the thief,
There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessman, just drinks my wine, and the plowmen dig my earth,
Nobody all along this line knows it, what it is even worth
There are many here among us who feel that this life is nothing but one joke
Him and me, we've been through all this, and this is not my fate,
So let us stop talking oh so falsely now, the hour is getting late
All along the watchtower, the princes kept the view
While, while the, all the women came and went, we had barefoot servants, too
Outside in the go distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, and the wind begins to...

XTC All Along The Watchtower Comments
Haha, this is great (and I'm a huge Dylan fan). The jokey singing suits the lyrics in a strange way.
I recently watched the documentary of XTC on showtime. It was really good. They changed as the years went by, and so many great songs. One of my favorite bands.
to me... for me... "All along the watchtower" is without any kind of doubt ONE OF MY ALL TIME favourite songs (most of all Jimi Hendrix's: Jimi's is " 'inmarcesible")
Straight justice
what a great bass line so funky for a dylan song from a british band on an album called white music. So awesome. And everybody does dylans songs better than he does.just a fact
Very zeppeliny type breakdown. I like it tho. Very original at the same time
Heavy cover !! Xtc still vaguely punk at this time. Hippies were not amused. Burn outs.
Bass- Stone Roses
All Along the Watchtower on Cocaine.
Second best cover of this song. Most inventive.
Amazing cover!
I hated this version when I first heard, but now I love it.
This is fucking horrible. Listen to Affinity version, that's the best cover for me.
I love Andy's harmonica honking on this!
Check out "Statue of Liberty" off the same album.
The single. Whoa oh !
great cover partrige is a genius but hendrix is cover is the best for me
amazing. fab.
I love this version and i love Andy's vocals on it!!
muy buenooooo!
Another great cover is the stranglers walk on by ?
Ric Woodhouse
Yep - an overlooked late 70s classic and definitely one of the best covers I've ever heard.
Best cover ever..
The best Dylan cover in the history of the Universe? Discuss...
no qustion.
You could delete the word 'Dylan' and the statement would still be true
Heard them play it live at Bristol Poly about a year before they put it on this album. Coming from Swindon and growing up with XTC and their previous iterations (Star Park, The Helium Kids)..I am certainly biased but IMHO they were outstanding.

that bass! better than Hendrix's IMO.
I wonder what Bob Dylan thinks of this...!
mjerica mekinja!
Hey, if it makes you want to stop listening...then you're no fan of XTC. This entire album was so far ahead of its time. You think this is a tough listen from the lp, try Cross-Wires. You people are lame.
Right on man. These guy's were a whole new genre when they started.
not my fave song but the best band in the world
This and Devo's Satisfaction are two of the best cover songs. Love the rawness of this.
Yes, better than the originals.
That's exactly what I was thinking!!! O_O
Catherine Wheel - Wish You Were Here better than floyd
Love the organ in XTC's version
James Bell Jr. Same here. It's that sinister house of horrors kind of organ sound. keeps the song grounded since there's no guitar.
One of the best piss-takes ever.
Loooove this version!! thanks for posting. XTC awesomeness
I tried to get into this version, but can't. :( Still love XTC, but this version doesn't just leave me feeling cold, it makes me want to stop listening... I didn't think that'd happen with an XTC song...
erm. try again
ΙΣΩΣ Η ΚΑΛΥΤΕΡΗ ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ ΑΠΟ ΜΙΑ ΑΓΝΩΣΤΗ ΜΠΑΝΤΑ
Dylan's is the political version - Hendrix's is the Rock version - XTC is the crossover version...XTC is a very Good Band.
I actually don't really like this, and I like XTC,still prefer Dylans version to anyone's,Dylan has more of a mysterious feel about his.
very good job
the beauty of Dylan.he translates to any genre
Dylan should be very proud. This version is the best!!! sorry James Marshall Hendrix.
Saw them do this live in 1978, it was awesome.
Hendrix cut the definitive version of this song and I thought there would never need be another version. I was wrong.
agreed. that about sums it up. this cover is it's own universe.
Enjoy this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_dgmeS90hg
I am fairly confident that Bob Dylan did this song before Jimi Hendrix did this song before XTC did this song
Written by Dylan
I BELIEVE that 100 percent. Night fencer. Tgeres another version done by jhon mayer. I dont ussually like do overs but im loving this o e right now. Better than jimmys. Jhons version is dffinnittly the best ive heard so far this sick tune reminds me of a eddie Murphy nick nolte movie for some reason. Different song but put on the clip two riders were approaching. As these bikies pull.up behind the prisob bus riding harlleys popping wheelies. Sic movie. Later brO.THE NIGHT FENCER
Yes the Bob Dylan classic arguably made more famous by Hendrix.....when Dylan started touring again he actually adopted Hendrix's version.....I personally have always really liked the XTC version
what's with all the homophobic shit about a cover?
The cover just screams 'gay"...the arrows pointing up to dude's ass, lol
@Marshal Tenner Winter I'm not gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
@Rich Latta You are all missing the point (no pun intended) it was a punk thing not a gay thing
LATTA ......is that a gay name?
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA SO funny !
meh. I've seen gayer. it is very 1978 though.
That bass!
Yes the bass! not bad for a bunch a white kids from England
Considering it was written by a Jewish kid.
saw the album cover in '78, bought the album no question without hearing it.... best blind buy I've ever made...... it took me into the 'atom age'
This is so much more than a cover, more of a quilt, you don't need anything more. It is the absolute bollocks.
This is so much more than a cover, more of a quilt, you don't need anything more. It is the absolute bollocks.
Speechless...
The original is by Bob Dylan..... love Jimi's. Love XTC's even more!
Fckn great cover, no question
Classic
Yeah this version really hit me in the middle of my mind when I first heard it!
THanks for uploading it !!!
Not just a cover. A major renovation. Better than the original.
Still the best version ever. Sorry Jimi
It's good but not as good as Hendrix !!!!!!
