Wright, Lizz - Every Grain Of Sand Lyrics

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair

Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand

Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay

I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand

I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face

I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

Incredible. When I hear this I realized just how inadequate Bob Dylan voice is.

  2. B.... W....

Beautiful version, although I'd have turned the piano down a smidge.

  4. D.... M....

This is beautiful. However, the piano is too loud. Otherwise, beautiful.

This is proof of the existence of God. Thank you for blessing the world with this your talent in this performance.

  9. K.... S....

    Boring.
The Dylan emotional complexity has been removed here.

    K.... S....

Each to their own. But a massive Dylan fan, this is just magical and beautiful. It's just words and melody, like the grains of sand, and I for one am thankful that this version exists. Slot alongside Emmylou. Thank you x

  10. b.... b....

    beautiful

  11. R.... ....

The piano drowns out her vocal performance. It needs to play second fiddle to the vocalist.

  12. D.... M....

    Lizz Wright’s voice is intoxicating!

  13. J.... S....

    Best Snoop Dogg video ever!!

  14. t.... ....

  25. E.... P....

This song moved me beyond words - beautifully done!

    E.... P....

It's a really good Bob Dylan cover! One of his most underrated songs. The studio version isn't perfect, but the demo versions are great for his 80s standard.

  26. m.... h....

The best female American vocalist w

  27. C.... O....

God sings through you these timeless truths that Dylan wrote. This song needed your voice; your soul coming through your voice is just so genuine. Beautiful ❤️

  28. L.... N....

    Um, gorgeous.

  29. F.... T....

    Simply beautiful.....

  30. F.... F....

    Absolutely beautiful

  31. T.... S....

    Incredibly beautiful

  32. C.... C....

Emmy Lou or Lizz? Call it a draw. Damn that was good.

  33. S.... H....

    Beautiful!

  34. K.... L....

I can repeat this again and again and again.....and again...

  35. m.... b....

    beautiful.. love it😊

  36. M.... S....

She has an amazing voice. I believe that this is the greatest song ever written.

    M.... S....

Dylan has like 100 songs that are contenders for greatest song ever written, doesn't he? It's so crazy.

    M.... S....

    One of them...for sure.

  37. T.... R....

Why am I sobbing? This angel's voice speaks to my soul....

  38. Z.... ....

I disagree. Amy Helm version is much better. Besides she has to read the lyrics, throwing off the timing twice, and she sings the :old: last line which Bob changed... Bad. :)

    Z.... ....

Did Bob Dylan officially change the last line of the song? I've always liked "in a perfect finished plan" better. I'm thinking of engraving the lyrics on something. Thanks!

    Z.... ....

No. The website still reads "I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man" but nearly all live recordings use the more religious line "perfect finished plan".. I guess you could find out by searching all live recordings on the web and pin point the change in time... Good luck.

    Z.... ....

Also I believe that some designer printed cloth bags with this song title... I saw a woman with such a bag a few years back near Montreal.

  39. D.... ....

Well she certainly sounds like an angel.

  40. J.... A....

So beautiful and soulfully sung and musically played . You have captured the writer's meaning ,.
I hope he agrees . Peter behind my Judy

  41. G.... S....

This song was just waiting for this wonderful version.

  42. B.... ....

Very good version.......well done girl....you did the master proud.

    B.... ....

    Bubbacat54

    “Well done girl”?? Really?

  43. S.... ....

Wow. I saw her opening for Van Morrison in Stuttgart, but she didn't sing that one. Pity.

  44. p.... ....

    Bob Dylan wrote this.

    p.... ....

Yes. She done the definitive version, right here.

    p.... ....

It’s missing those sweet harmonica breaks. Beautiful voice...but nobody delivers like his Bobness.

  45. m.... o....

    Ojojoj.

  46. L.... H....

    Beautiful. Best version yet.

    L.... H....

The only other version I know is Emmylou. This ranks beside that for sure. What other ones should I listen to?

  47. T.... C....

    beautiful rendering!

(btw, at first glance it looked like keyboardist was Snoop doing Stevie.)

  48. G.... t....

    pure talent! so good

  49. M.... R....

volim ovu pjesmu, predivna Lizz, tvoja je izvedba nadahnuće, zanos i preporod

  50. A.... B....

    so adorable and talented
