This is so weird to me. When I came out, i could have literally cared less if my parents approved or not. It's who I was and I didn't care of they accepted me or not. The moral of the story is that we should never give someone else that much power over our own happiness or identity.

I watched this video at least four times already and I am just so happy with her coming out. The story of her father was unfortunate to hear since he wasn't accepting on people being gay and she wanted to come out so bad, but I am glad he is now accepting. I almost cried when she explained how she searched her whole town and couldn't find anyone that was like her. Her story is absolutely fascinating and I might have to pick up Ellen's mother's book because I never even knew she made a book!

I have a niece who grew up with me and seems that she's one of my kids.. From girly girly suddenly she was change into a like you Ellen but we never ask her why and how. We love her just the way she is and what ever happened she will always be our baby and we're proud of her.. And in Philippines it's not a big deal.. More power to you Ellen and Lucy.. it may not be right, but they're still good people and it's not our place to judge god has to help them and we can't judge anyone for their actions or tell them they're wrong, they have to find that out on their own through God , it's his job, no one person is perfect. so just be there for them in their time of struggle. Please, please please get in touch with an advice/support group, they can be tremendously helpful. Your sexuality is only a part of what defines you as a person...there is so much more to you as a valuable human-being and those that love you know this. Some of them may need time to adjust so try to give them space to do this,but that doesn't mean you have to be unhappy...or scared...living your life as someone that isn't truly you, that way no-one ''wins". I hate when people say that "God doesn't like it " because how do you know what God wants. We need to understand that the Bible was written by a human being not God so we can not based every argument on God this and God that. I realize that this interview was a few years back, but I was reading through the comments and had to respond. Until you have experienced your child coming out to you, you will never understand how your reaction will influence the rest of their lives.  My daughter came to me when she was 19 and said "Mom, I need to tell you something, but I'm afraid you will hate me for it"  I said "Honey, there is never anything you will ever say or do that would make me hate you ".. "just tell me"... She took a deep breath and said "Mom, I'm Gay"... I just looked at her,.  She said "Did you hear me Mom? I'm a Lesbian"  I just smiled and said "Well, no sh*t!" She said "You knew?!" I replied "Baby, I've always known, I was just waiting for you to figure it out."  I had known since she was about twelve that she was struggling with her sexuality, but at the same time she needed to figure things out on her own. She is in her thirties now, and we have a great relationship and I wouldn't trade that for anything in this world. I always told her she could come to me no matter what the issue what, but this was very scary for her because growing up, her grandpa, my father in law, was the most homophobic human being I have ever known... and was nasty about it. Her fear of losing any part of her family was devastating to her...that is why she kept it to herself. It's true that he never really had much to do with her after that, but that was his loss. I reassured her that not everyone's opinion mattered. Be who you are meant to be and I will love you until my last breath!  Ignore those who use religion to judge others.  If it doesn't affect your life in any way, why do you care?

Actually - see my above comment - the Bible NEVER states that Jesus is God's son - this was decided by The Roman Ruler Constantine and the Christian Bishops of the time - when the Bible was written - in 325AD at The First Council of Nicaea.  They decided FIRST - that Jesus WAS divine - and the Christian Bible stories were chosen according to Jesus' divinity - and nothing more!!!!  If a story referred to Jesus as a normal boy or man - it was not used in the Bible!!!!!!!!!!
This is the reason that almost NOTHING is know about Jesus life from birth to about 30 years old!!!!!!!!!!  Jesus was about 30 when he gave his Sermon On the Mount - which started his mission!!!!!!  Current thinking is that Jesus was crucified at about age 34 and Mary had 5 or 6 children AFTER Jesus was born!!!!!!!!!!!

All this talk and criticism makes me mad! I have a Christian friend who came out as openly bisexual on Face Book!!!!!!!!!! And all my other friends support that, Christians and others. The are three other girls I know who are bisexual and everyone supports them, WITHOUT criticism. All four of these girls are my age by the way, so I know them pretty well, and they would never seriously harm anyone or do anything against the law.

Wonderful! Everyone should read Chely Wright's autobiography. It's moving and also heartbreaking. How much longer will much of our country vilify our brothers and sisters who just happen to love the person they love? In all cultures in all ages there have been people born who fall in love with their same gender. I say "born" because they are born that way, as science has determined now for years. Every one of us is related to at least one gay person, even if we don't know it. May you have a happy and blessed life, Chely Wright. You deserve it!

Ohhhh wow. You know what... just when I begin to think I have completely lost faith in humanity, I come on here and read comments that bright, INTELLIGENT, broad minded people have chose to share with the world.
People never cease to amaze me with their opinions and how appropriately they go about sharing them. 
Myself, I would consider as a very broad minded, understanding, empathetic individual. I believe everyone has a right to an opinion, no matter how absurd it may be, as long as you can argue your cause, then who cares right???
To argue that anything that maybe seen as going against YOUR INTERPRETATION of what might be written in the Bible, is unintelligent and illogical and to me would be the definition of absurdity!!! So, when I do read comments similar to our friends below here, I really do try my best to put myself in their shoes. When I stop laughing at the fact that people are actually so unintelligent, narrow minded and bigoted, I realise just how sad this is.
Every now and then we meet amazing individuals that will change the world and how people view it. Such a shame it sometimes feels like taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back with certain individuals.

That's why there are rules(comandments) to live by.. So i guess people think they should be able to do anything. Good or bad. The laws of nature has to do with a male and a female..why do you think they were created? I'm just saying what the Bible says. People think Christians are being mean when they say God wants you to do good things..not things that go against the laws of nature..Oh well.! I'm not trying to be mean.I'm just saying what God says is right and wrong..

@Allie Grant Please understand that the Bible was written by humans in 425AD - at The First Council of Nicaea (now Turkey) and administrated by the Roman ruler Constantine - who demanded that the Christians - who were taking over Rome - (which was mainly Pagan religion at the time) - create a book of rules to their religion - based on MANY, MANY religious stories!!!  They gathered MANY Christian stories - and started with over 4,000 books (each book a group of stories) and ended up with the 96 Books (That make up the old Testament today) of the Bible!!!!!
Constantine was a Pagan all his life - and was baptized Christian on his deathbed.  This was done to save Rome - from the Christians tearing Rome apart.  The first decision at the First Council of Nicaea was (THE main decision) that Jesus WAS divine - He WAS the son of God - so if Jesus WAS divine - then any book (or story) that made Jesus look or seem man made - was automatically left out of the Bible!!!!  (And YES - there was a book written by Mary - Jesus mother - that was not used!!!) And EVERY book, chapter and word of the Bible was based on Christian stories handed down over years and years and years before and after Jesus' death 425 years ago!!!  This First Council of Nicaea is a written historical fact - look it up!!!!  The Catholic (Roman) Pope also had another council in (I THINK) 725AD to straighten out a few things (and add to the Nicaean Creed - and you've heard it if you are Catholic - it has been in the Catholic mass for hundreds of years- "God from God - light from light - true God from True God"  As an alter boy - I've said it THOUSANDS of times!!!)!!!!  But one thing NEVER changed - the overall meaning of the Bible - has always been - and I think will always be - Love each other as you love yourself - PERIOD!!!
So come on folks - it really isn't that hard!!!!!  Why care if people are gay or not - it is NONE of your business who sleeps with whom!!!!!  It is really quite simple - Love one another - as you love yourself!!!!
AND - if you have time - READ THE BIBLE - cover to cover - it is a truly great read - and hard to put down - with hundreds of truly amazing stories - and NONE about religion!!!!! (Did you know that the Noah's Arc story is less than ONE HALF of a PAGE long - and they made a 2 hour movie about it!!!!!!!  And you'll find a few million selling hit songs - their words taken right from the pages of the Bible!!!!!!!!) And if you don't have time - find the time - a page or two each night - it truly makes you feel better!!!!!  I read it to my daughters - for years - a few pages each night - when they were 5 and 8 years old.  My rule was: Read 15 minutes - discuss 15 minutes!!!) Most nights - they demanded that I read them a chapter from what they called "The God Book"!!  They really loved it!!!!!!

I've always been a Chely Wright fan, from her first album.  When I first heard she announced that she's gay, it surprised me, but, didn't change how I felt about her as a person or an artist.  I'm glad she's free now that she's unburdened herself from that secret.  I hope she keeps making her music and is forever happy in her life.  My favorite song (that I also learned to play on guitar) is, "Emma Jean's Guitar."  What a great finger-picking song!  

God this struck a chord. I've known I was bisexual for a few years. I tried to tell my mum in the summer of 2012 (well, she kind of guessed something was up) but, as amazing as she is, she thought - like a lot of people - that it was a phase. And it hasn't been discussed since. I thought that I'd save the honest conversation for when I met a woman who I wanted to be with, but this has made me want to open that door with my parents again. To be honest, I probably won't. It's an incredibly difficult conversation to have, the thought makes me feel physically sick with worry.

@Martin Kove Yeah religious intolerance as a whole baffles me. Be as religious as wants but spewing hate and, in the devout muslim case, killing gays, people of other religions etc, will never make any sense whatsoever to me

people need to get osme eprspective..he said christians are the most hateful religious people..well christians arent killing gay people or unbelievers..muslims are. so people need to understand this..

When I first watched this on TV I was not out but three years later I am. I want you to know, Ellen & Staff, that stories and guests like this really speak to viewers like me, help us accept ourselves and have confidence, and eventually come out :).
