I'm a retired Air Force Major. I have spent my entire life in the Air Force. My parents met when my mother wa a WWII WAC clerk/typist assigned to the Army Air Forces office my father supervised. After the war she was discharged and married my father. He stayed in the Army Air Forces through the transition to the Air Force and served a 22 year career retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant, one of the earliest to hold tat rank. In the military, when you retire you don't actually leave the service. You are transferred to the Retired Reserve. You don't get a pension, you get Retired Pay. Four years after he retired I attended the Air Force Academy. After graduation I served for twenty years as a B-52 pilot. My family and I understand this song and the importance of supporting our service men and women.

This song now reminds me of following my grandma and grandpa's funeral procession at the military burial grounds.... They send the service men off so beautifully.. with a horse and carriage and a gun salute... tears 😥

Love the songs my father, my father in law and my Husband served in the Marines! I'm so proud of each of them. My son & brothers served in the Navy. My Grandson is in Army Boot camp. My first husband is missing in action. Lost at sea. Our military deserves respect. Those who insult or disrespect need to understand the sacrifice they have given for those people who have no clue the sacrifices. But give them the freedom to be ignorant!!!!!

The fact that Chely Wright is a lesbian has not one thing to do with this song! She is an American and she chose to honor her brother and ALL THOSE who serve our country with this song. I don't give two shits about her sexual orientation.

at first when she came out I felt that way too!frankly,i couldn't understand how someone as sweet and pretty as her who could have any guy she wants could be gay,and at first I shunned her.but 3 months later I heard this song and replayed it twice,then I realized chely's being gay didn't change what made me a fan and could make us friends if she and I ever meet! shes still very patriotic and god fearing,and still cares deeply about and supports our troops.plus shes done a lot for our troops and for schools.i read her book and I don't 100% agree with the gay lifestyle and I don't agree with her completely that people are born gay,i think they switch over,but im still a fan of hers,i like and respect her and I still think shes a great woman! but

The first time I ever heard this song was just a few days after one of my good friends was killed over seas. He was in the usmc. She was at our county fair one yr and was told that his parents was in the crowd. She dedicated this song to them.

I've listened to this song time and again, since I originally heard it overseas... I have never met Ms. Wright's bother, but if he's still in the service I say thank you... and to Ms Wright, thank you as well.

Ms. Wright, something tells me the obscene gesture you got had nothing to do with the U.S. Marines sticker on your bumper. Of all the memories that I have of my tour in Iraq, the memory of the concert put on by Chely Wright and her singing of this song in the summer of 2004 is one that will remain with me forever. It was one of the good memories of that time.

I hung out with her in Iraq. We were the first ones to hear this song. What a classy lady. She was fun to hang out with and she put on a great show. (and her band had a good time playing with our weapons, lol)

My twin brother and I are currently working on our 5th years as Marines and US Army Soliders and for us to hear a country artist put out a song like this is something we can truly listen to and be brought bck home in mind. To us this a true country artist who knows what knid of live we Armed forces" live in and then sing a song with love like this is something that I think all armed forces are greatful for. My father was a career Navy officer. My husband spent five years in the Marine Corps. My father was disgusted by the Vietnam war. My husband is equally disgusted by our current wars around the planet. We don't need white trash like you, Chely, to definte what patriotism means. If you are willing to throw your borther's life away for immoral wars, then that is your problem. I guess you have to support these wars to get cheap gas for your SUV.

I never served in the military. Its probably one of the few significant regrets I have in my life. What I will say is this. It does not matter if i support any particular conflict or not, I will always support our troops. I supported them as a teenager during Viet Nam as probably the only Republican student in my school. I support them now.

I served with Chris Wright in the Marine Corps back in 1993 - 1995, Chely Wrights brother.

I was out there in 04 in Camp Taji. she even pulled me on stage out there to ask me questions wooo hooo keep up the good work Chely!

Chely came to Ft Stewart a few years back with Jeff Foxworthy & man did she ever put on a great show! God Bless our troops, their familes & supporters!

@axm0z5h the song is good. if you don't like the way she sings, that's got nothing to do with the quality of the song. and the reason her voice is shaky is because, as she said at the beginning, she was very nervous about performing it. any musician can have that happen if they're nervous.

Having served in the Marine Corps for 6 years, I was proud my son chose to serve also.
On Family Day, before he graduated Basic Training aboard Parris Island in 2007, they played this song and the video that accompanies it on the big screen in the auditorium.
It received a standing ovation!!!
I just want to say I'm proud of my son, and all the other Marines present and past who chose to serve!

Army Vet

I've been back 3 days from iraq. I cried when hearing this.
Yesterday, I was explaining my troubles to my GF saying I was having troubles Decompressing and feeling Anxiety. She said to me. "You've got yourself into this war, you can get yourself out"

What she doesn't know is, I had a ring for her..

Sorry but if she can't stand by you or understand you then that ring isn't for her.

I've been back from Iraq 3 days..Today when I was sharing my feelings of anxiety with my GF she said to me, "You've got yourself into this war you can get yourself out " Little does she know, I had a ring waiting for her. (Till she said that)

Chely Wright did this song as a tribute to her brother (a fellow Marine) and troops of all branches. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines.......I really don't give a damn how many thumbs up or thumbs down my post gets.......I said it! And I'll stick by it! In the words of Ronald Reagan, "It is well to be liked, but far better to be respected!"

I wish I hadn't heard this song. I used to like Chely Wright's music but steelguitarboy is spot on. The quality of her songs really took a nosedive after the "Let Me In" album.

Let me break this down for you. First of all, I happen to be a genuine US Army Infantry Veteran. I also happen to be one of the youngest pedal steel guitar players in the United States. That said, you do your 'cause' vary poorly, whatever it might be. You call me "boy." You assume things about what I post with absolutely any basis... 1/23 Infantry in Ft. Lewis WA, & 1+ miserable year in Camp Hovey in S. Korea. Instead of confronting me on my post, you attack me verbally? Pathetic!

steelguitarboy.......I think "BOY" is the key word here. Have you ever served? Apparently not! If you had, then you'd appreciate the true feelings in this song. As well as the songs you criticized in your previous post.

You're not entirely wrong. I'm of the opinion that Wright wrote this song to do nothing but to cash in on the Nashville patriotic song category. Tune is shallow, poorly written, and not particularly profound in any way. All in all, that's par for the course for the Nashville machine. I just wish she wouldn't drag her country or it's service men through the muck just so she can pretend to give a darn. Country music is completely dead thanks to these sort of 'folk.'

Not only does Nashville insult the intelligence of the general population, but it will capitalize on tragedy no matter how pathetic the product it turns out.
