Wright, Chely - Bumper Of My SUV Lyrics

I've got a bright red sticker on the back of my car
Says United States Marines
And yesterday a lady in a mini-van held up a middle finger at me
Does she think she knows what I stand for
Or the things that I believe
Just by looking at a sticker for the U.S. Marines
On the bumper of my SUV

See, my brother Chris, he's been in for more than 14 years now
Our dad was in the Navy during Vietnam
Did his duty then he got out
And my grandpa earned his purple heart
On the beach of Normandy
That's why I've got a sticker for the U.S. Marines
On the bumper of my SUV

But that doesn't mean that I want war
I'm not Republican or Democrat
But I've gone all around this crazy world
Just to try and better understand
Yes, I do have questions
I get to ask them because I'm free
That's why I've got a sticker for the U.S. Marines
On the bumper of my SUV

'Cause I've been to Hiroshima
And I've been to the DMZ
I've walked on the sand in Baghdad
Still don't have all of the answers I need
But I guess I wanna know where she's been
Before she judges and gestures to me
'Cause she don't like my sticker for the U.S. Marines
On the bumper of my SUV

So I hope that lady in her mini-van
Turns on her radio and hears this from me
As she picks up her kids from their private school
And drives home safely on our city streets
Or to the building where her church group meets
Yeah, that's why I've got a sticker for the U.S. Marines
On the bumper of my SUV

Wright, Chely Bumper Of My SUV Comments
  1. V.... ....

Don't cut people off in traffic next time and you won't get the middle finger.

  2. B.... M....

This Is a wonderfull song to me, cause allways remind me family that take the most important desition , be a part of the US marines family, and feel so proud to be on it, and that's important to me too , God bless America!!!!! Forever

  3. M.... G....

Under patriotic Country, this one got [Blocked in country]. Who despises this stuff and our service members so bad?
Whoever you are, start praying that the other side doesn't win.

  4. J.... B....

This song is proof that storytellers aren't dead in country music.

  5. M.... B....

I'm a retired Air Force Major. I have spent my entire life in the Air Force. My parents met when my mother wa a WWII WAC clerk/typist assigned to the Army Air Forces office my father supervised. After the war she was discharged and married my father. He stayed in the Army Air Forces through the transition to the Air Force and served a 22 year career retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant, one of the earliest to hold tat rank. In the military, when you retire you don't actually leave the service. You are transferred to the Retired Reserve. You don't get a pension, you get Retired Pay. Four years after he retired I attended the Air Force Academy. After graduation I served for twenty years as a B-52 pilot. My family and I understand this song and the importance of supporting our service men and women.

  6. U.... S....

This song now reminds me of following my grandma and grandpa's funeral procession at the military burial grounds.... They send the service men off so beautifully.. with a horse and carriage and a gun salute... tears 😥

  7. T.... F....

Love the songs my father, my father in law and my Husband served in the Marines! I'm so proud of each of them. My son & brothers served in the Navy. My Grandson is in Army Boot camp. My first husband is missing in action. Lost at sea. Our military deserves respect. Those who insult or disrespect need to understand the sacrifice they have given for those people who have no clue the sacrifices. But give them the freedom to be ignorant!!!!!

  8. M.... L....

The very beginning piano notes are from the beginning of the Marine's Hymn that all Marines learn to sing in bootcamp.

  9. D.... D....

So grateful that you did decide to record this...One of my all time favorites of yours.

  10. s.... j....

maybe she got flipped off because she is a crappy driver....

  11. A.... A....

I am a retired Marine First Sergeant and I spent 21 months in Vietnam. You brought tears to my eyes!!!

    A.... A....

semper fi 1st sgt. I'm a marine no longer on active duty and a desert storm veteran. chelys brother is a master sgt and a ch-53e crew chief and a veteran of Iraq, and I think Afghanistan too!

  12. M.... L....

It is because of the sacrifice of Marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen that some of these assholes are free to make their ignorant comments that bash the military.

  13. H.... ....

    Patriotic Trucker Hats! https://www.etsy.com/listing/196147735/custom-american-flag-red-white-blue?ref=listing-23

  14. J.... C....

    She gets it.

  15. G.... B....

This is one of the best songs ive ever heard especially with sll the meaning in it. Awesome awesome song ang god blessyou and sll our troops everywhere.

  16. g.... ....

    Too bad she's queer tho...

    g.... ....

    And this matters how?

    g.... ....

The fact that Chely Wright is a lesbian has not one thing to do with this song! She is an American and she chose to honor her brother and ALL THOSE who serve our country with this song. I don't give two shits about her sexual orientation.

    g.... ....

at first when she came out I felt that way too!frankly,i couldn't understand how someone as sweet and pretty as her who could have any guy she wants could be gay,and at first I shunned her.but 3 months later I heard this song and replayed it twice, then I realized chely's being gay didn't change what made me a fan and could make us friends if she and I ever meet! shes still very patriotic and god fearing, and still cares deeply about and supports our troops.plus shes done a lot for our troops and for schools.i read her book and I don't 100% agree with the gay lifestyle and I don't agree with her completely that people are born gay,i think they switch over, but im still a fan of hers,i like and respect her and I still think shes a great woman! but
let me also worn you of this, dont get to eager to bash or threaten her for 2 reasons,1,shes a farm girl who could probably kick your ass,and 2,her brother is a marine master sgt who is very protective of her and he is not a small man! and hes not fat either!

    g.... ....

Frankly, I don't really give a damn about her sexual preference. I like her voice and I like this song. So what if she's a Lesbian.....I like to think that maybe....it's because she's never been with ME!!!!!

  17. t.... ....

there is a Military support page called Adopt A VET on facebook for those that Support our Vets . those that dont can Kiss My Ass !

  18. 1.... ....

The first time I ever heard this song was just a few days after one of my good friends was killed over seas. He was in the usmc. She was at our county fair one yr and was told that his parents was in the crowd. She dedicated this song to them.

  19. L.... C....

I've listened to this song time and again, since I originally heard it overseas... I have never met Ms. Wright's bother, but if he's still in the service I say thank you... and to Ms Wright, thank you as well.

You don't have to wear to a uniform to serve this great country and the men and women that protect us every day and night... thank you, thank you for making us all realize that a little sticker on the bumper of any car is more than just a thought

  20. A.... M....

I wanna say thank u to our troops

  21. t.... ....

no ichabod your mommy did me just fine . tell her i said thanks . tell her i lost her number thats why i didnt call . ROTFLMAO ! she will believe it .

  22. i.... ....

Mommy just didn't hold you enough, did she?

  23. t.... ....

dear BITCH it doesnt matter what kind of LIES you post saying you SUPPORT OUR TROOPS . if it was in your heart you wouldnt have posted such Drivel ! please dont vote !

  24. i.... ....

Actually, I have. I've donated to veterans organizations and helped them get a little publicity in my community. Kiss my ass.

  25. J.... ....

    49 and counting. asswipes.

  26. t.... ....

dear BITCH , it doesnt matter if an ALIEN tells you to write a song to SUPPORT OUR TROOPS , besides being IGNORANT have you done anything to SUPPORT OUR TROOPS ? please dont vote !

  27. i.... ....

Ms. Wright, something tells me the obscene gesture you got had nothing to do with the U.S. Marines sticker on your bumper. It more likely had to do with some kind of inconsiderate driving practice or something along those lines. This song is ridiculous, which is why I'll give this video a thumbs down.

I support the troops, just not asshattery like this.

    i.... ....

    Listen to the song, dumbass.

  28. J.... W....

Of all the memories that I have of my tour in Iraq, the memory of the concert put on by Chely Wright and her singing of this song in the summer of 2004 is one that will remain with me forever. It was one of the good memories of that time.

  29. t.... ....

HEY EVERYBODY , if youre on facebook theres a page called Adopt A VET that is for ANYONE who puts our country before themselves ! VETERANS , active duty , FAMILY MEMBERS , wives , HUSBANDS , friends , POSSIBLE ENLISTEE'S just anyone who supports our troops past , present and future ! THANK YOU !

  30. A.... K....

i hope you guys make it i really do
    best of luck

  31. A.... K....

my ex husband was in for 4 yeara and never got deployed the hardest thing about the time he was in was the training that he had to do

  32. D.... I....

@Jmarc1947, you are very welcome and I will certianly let my brother know that you have thanked him.. Sincerely, Chris

  33. B.... .....

I hung out with her in Iraq. We were the first ones to hear this song. What a classy lady. She was fun to hang out with and she put on a great show. (and her band had a good time playing with our weapons, lol)

  34. A.... C....

No matter how far I travel the United States will ALWAYS be home. Im proud of my family's long military history. I miss those of my friwnds who wont return from doing their duty and will never forget.
Someone once said - you don't want to stand behind our politicians, thats fine. But stand behind our troops IN HONOUR or you can stand in front of them in DISHONOUR.

  35. D.... I....

My twin brother and I are currently working on our 5th years as Marines and US Army Soliders and for us to hear a country artist put out a song like this is something we can truly listen to and be brought bck home in mind. To us this a true country artist who knows what knid of live we Armed forces" live in and then sing a song with love like this is something that I think all armed forces are greatful for. And we are PROUD to serve OUR country for FREEDOM!! Semper Fi & US Army United we stand!

  36. L.... B....

My brother is in the marines too. Just because they fight for our country doesnt mean they like it anymore then the next person. We need someone to do and just be happy that you're safe. So I hope those 43 people think about as their ass is safe at home every night.

  37. c.... ....

@FrannieMichelle19 Could not have said it better myself, from a proud Army Dad whose Baby Girl fights for your freedom.

  38. p.... ....

Yes I do have questions I get to ask them because I'm free. I love that line. The whole song is amazing but that sums it up and says it all.

  39. B.... E....

    AMEEEEEERICUUUUUUUUUUH

  40. d.... ....

What if she got flipped off because she cut the lady off? Just saying. Or, because she was driving a "gas-guzzling" (to some people) vehicle. It's just alot to assume it was because of the sticker. Again, just saying.

  41. t.... ....

PLEEEEEEEASE take a look at this on you tube , showing support for the burr family , its about a marines family who is being sued to take down a sign showing support for their son , a marine in afganistan . thank you !

  42. v.... ....

@jasrogg WOW, U certainly have a strong opinion on this. And U know what-you are entitled to express that opinion here on this forum---or anywhere else in this country that U want. But ALWAYS remember!-the reason you have that right-is because for over 200 years our country's military has fought and died for you and everyone in our country to have that right. Its obvious that no one here will change your opinion-and thats OK-but just remember-especially today-our Independence Day-how lucky U R.

  43. d.... ....

My father was a career Navy officer. My husband spent five years in the Marine Corps. My father was disgusted by the Vietnam war. My husband is equally disgusted by our current wars around the planet. We don't need white trash like you, Chely, to definte what patriotism means. If you are willing to throw your borther's life away for immoral wars, then that is your problem. I guess you have to support these wars to get cheap gas for your SUV.

  44. S.... O....

I never served in the military. Its probably one of the few significant regrets I have in my life. What I will say is this. It does not matter if i support any particular conflict or not, I will always support our troops. I supported them as a teenager during Viet Nam as probably the only Republican student in my school. I support them now.

To everyone who came back, Welcome home.
To everyone who is missing, you are not forgotten.
To everyone who has served, Thank you.

  45. J.... P....

@jasrogg you will never know what's it's like to be a marine bc you do not have enough balls to step forth and take the challenge to be a Marine if it wasn't for the marines, sailors, airman or soldiers you wouldn't have the freedom you have now...I've been in the marines since 2008 and I love it I am going on my first deployment next year but I know plenty of people who has faught and died so if you don't stand behind the military why don't you just stand in front if us

  46. M.... L....

@jasrogg ....Thank my God for people like you? Oh I do....I do.....I thank my God for people like you because it's people like you who assure me that I and my son and all others who serve are in a far superior class than yourself........dont bother replying to this as this is the end of my conversation.

  47. M.... L....

@jasrogg ....I can't begin to tell you just how truly proud I am of my son......and just how utterly disgusted I am by your stupid-ass comments. My son serves so that damn fools like you can be free to print bullshit like this.

  48. A.... ....

You know, "she" is the only person in the world who knows who Chely is talking about, and I know she really feels like dirt ever since this song came out, for that one single gesture.

  49. M.... L....

@jasrogg ...First of all I served in The USMC from 1978 - 1986. Second my son now serves in the USMC and was wounded on July 4, 2010 in Afghanistan. And third....neither he nor I were EVER soldiers. We are MARINES, dammit! You remember that word....MARINE......any Marine....or any soldier, sailor or airman for that matter.....are worth far more than you wasted ass!

  50. H.... B....

@jasrogg I'm sorry that you have such a narrow minded view of things. Having been raised by a "Pat" and proud of it. Listening to the stories he brought back from his tours and having the chance to talk to others who have returned from tours, the horrors and strife they face over there every day would make most "civilized" people cry. Do I agree with war? NO. Do I believe we are doing things for the better over there DAMN straight. If you want the truth talk to those who count then talk tous

  51. H.... B....

P.S. The dislikes.... GO BACK TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY !!!

  53. G.... u....

    Semper Fi
I proudly play this song when I get dirty looks, my SUV has usmc stuff all over it, my husband is a Marine... Thank you for thus song

  54. D.... B....

44 dislikes????? That's 44 commies we need to deport.... Semper Fi, brothers.

  55. a.... ....

43 people need to get that stick out of their ass and have pride for the USA. Support our troops because they support your life by fighting for it

  56. T.... ....

you know the lady that Chely is singing about should have been watching her own driving instead of focusing on a bumper sticker. I am proud to say that i support all of the troops out there. Ive had many family members in the military and i want to salute them all for the freedoms that they give us. Where your Army, Navy, Marines or what god bless you all and come home safe to us!

  57. M.... ....

maybe she flipped her off because she changed lanes without signaling in a monstrous gas guzzler.

  58. 1.... ....

I lost a real good friend in jan of 2005. He was in the marines. She performed at the county fair where I live and she was informed that his mom and dad were there. She dedicated this song to them

  59. t.... ....

What a bizarre song. If she wanted to honour her brother go ahead, knock yourself out. But don't make shit up or speculate wildly to make your point.

  60. B.... G....

this is a very terrible song, regardless of the subject matter. It just doesn't sound good. The lyrics are incredibly lame. Doesn't anyone see that?

  61. B.... D....

maybe the girl in the song flipped her off because chely is an awful driver. not because of a sticker.

  62. c.... ....

  66. R.... M....

Like the song, Don't think the lady was on her way to a church group meeting though lol.

  67. s.... ....

I served with Chris Wright in the Marine Corps back in 1993 - 1995, Chely Wrights brother.

  68. W.... E....

I was out there in 04 in Camp Taji. she even pulled me on stage out there to ask me questions wooo hooo keep up the good work Chely!

  69. l.... ....

Chely came to Ft Stewart a few years back with Jeff Foxworthy & man did she ever put on a great show! God Bless our troops, their familes & supporters!

  70. J.... A....

awesome song.... and thank you I served as well as two of our sons are serving now...

  71. 1.... ....

I agree. F that bitch. I lost a good friend to this war and when she performed at our county fair a yr or so later she found out his mom and dad was in the stands and she dedicated this song to them. The first time I heard this song it brought tears to my eyes and I had to pull over. R.I.P Marine Lance Cpl Jon Etterling. You are missed by all who knew you. I know I miss you

  72. W.... H....

Pardon my French, but "Fuck that Mini-Driven Bitch!"

You guys keep making these songs, WE DO APPRECIATE IT! and without People like you, Hell, There just ain't no reason to fight.

    Semper Fi! Stay hard!

  73. M.... L....

@NamVetBuck ......From one Jarhead to another....Semper Fi! Thank you for your service, my brother!

  74. J.... V....

My husband is in Afghanistan now and this song always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you Chely!

  75. t.... ....

*****AWESOME Chely***** Loved it then and love it more now! ;)

  76. J.... B....

@axm0z5h the song is good. if you don't like the way she sings, that's got nothing to do with the quality of the song. and the reason her voice is shaky is because, as she said at the beginning, she was very nervous about performing it. any musician can have that happen if they're nervous.

  77. M.... L....

Having served in the Marine Corps for 6 years, I was proud my son chose to serve also.
On Family Day, before he graduated Basic Training aboard Parris Island in 2007, they played this song and the video that accompanies it on the big screen in the auditorium.
    It received a standing ovation!!!
I just want to say I'm proud of my son, and all the other Marines present and past who chose to serve!
Semper Fi and God Bless you all!

  78. w.... ....

god bless our troops.. semper fi

  79. C.... S....

The song is good, but did she ever think the person gestured to her because she was just driving to slow. Because she knows that when the person did give her the bird that her problem was that sticker.

  80. k.... M....

A great song. I think it is great. Thanks.

Thanks for all the service people do.

    be well ken

  81. b.... ....

Got to see her live while deployed in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Not a Country Fan but really enjoyed the show. Thank you Chely for the support!

  82. M.... L....

Semper Fi Chris. God Bless You and Thank you, from a greatful nation!

  83. J.... S....

My dear brother..She is not worth your time or your honor. I thank you for standing watch over me. God Bless you and Thank you for your service.

  84. C.... R....

I've been back 3 days from iraq. I cried when hearing this.
Yesterday, I was explaining my troubles to my GF saying I was having troubles Decompressing and feeling Anxiety. She said to me. "You've got yourself into this war, you can get yourself out"

What she doesn't know is, I had a ring for her..

    C.... R....

Sorry but if she can't stand by you or understand you then that ring isn't for her.

  85. C.... R....

I've been back from Iraq 3 days..Today when I was sharing my feelings of anxiety with my GF she said to me, "You've got yourself into this war you can get yourself out " Little does she know, I had a ring waiting for her. (Till she said that)

  86. J.... J....

    Semper Fidelis Chely, thank you!

    Thank you.

    ???.....?????.....????????....????????

  90. s.... ....

First of all, the difference is that that MultiBald made elementary assumptions about my service record on the condition that if I indeed had served in the military, I would have had a different opinion about the song. He also chose to poke fun of my screen name, as if it had anything to do with anything whatsoever. Now, please explain to me what, in your opinion, was a verbal attack on Wright? Did I call her the C word? Can you explain to me what the point of this song is?

  91. M.... L....

back out of your contract??? Don't serve for the.....????Clinton Army???? I don't know who you're calling a 16 year old reservist......Dude! I'm 48. You and I should get to know each other better!

  92. s.... ....

If you have "goose bumps" listening to this and want to join the service. . . First of all, your taste in music is completely awful. Secondly, do you know that you can back out of your contract at any time? Don't serve for the rabble rouser who can read a speech-never-served-never-would-serve commander in chief. I was Clinton army. My advise: See the world. Read some books. There are plenty of us who know what were doing and we don't need 16 year old reservists. Thanks for the try.

  93. M.... L....

I see I got 3 thumbs down....LOL....good! Just for the record....I am a Marine Corps veteran! Once a jarhead, always a jarhead! And damn proud of it!
Chely Wright did this song as a tribute to her brother (a fellow Marine) and troops of all branches. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines.......I really don't give a damn how many thumbs up or thumbs down my post gets.......I said it! And I'll stick by it! In the words of Ronald Reagan, "It is well to be liked, but far better to be respected!"

  94. T.... ....

I wish I hadn't heard this song. I used to like Chely Wright's music but steelguitarboy is spot on. The quality of her songs really took a nosedive after the "Let Me In" album.

  95. D.... W....

To Steelguitarboy: Thank you for your service.

Now... tell me... how is your opinion of this song and the singer (which is a verbal attack by the way) any different than the opinion of MultiBaldEagle of you?

    Just something to think about.

    Dave Walden
    Prior USAF

  96. s.... ....

Let me break this down for you. First of all, I happen to be a genuine US Army Infantry Veteran. I also happen to be one of the youngest pedal steel guitar players in the United States. That said, you do your 'cause' vary poorly, whatever it might be. You call me "boy." You assume things about what I post with absolutely any basis... 1/23 Infantry in Ft. Lewis WA, & 1+ miserable year in Camp Hovey in S. Korea. Instead of confronting me on my post, you attack me verbally? Pathetic!

  97. t.... ....

Right On Chely! You really tell it like it is and we just love it!!! ;)

  98. M.... L....

steelguitarboy.......I think "BOY" is the key word here. Have you ever served? Apparently not! If you had, then you'd appreciate the true feelings in this song. As well as the songs you criticized in your previous post.

  99. s.... ....

You're not entirely wrong. I'm of the opinion that Wright wrote this song to do nothing but to cash in on the Nashville patriotic song category. Tune is shallow, poorly written, and not particularly profound in any way. All in all, that's par for the course for the Nashville machine. I just wish she wouldn't drag her country or it's service men through the muck just so she can pretend to give a darn. Country music is completely dead thanks to these sort of 'folk.'

  100. s.... ....

Wow. . . Fake tears and everything. This is right down there with "American soldier" & "Have you forgotten." Not only does Nashville insult the intelligence of the general population, but it will capitalize on tragedy no matter how pathetic the product it turns out. We've come a long way since the days of songs like "Ira Hayes."
