Wonder Years, The - I Wanted So Badly To Be Brave Lyrics
I cut open my palm and held it out to you.
You did the same with your old army surplus blade.
My blood's never as warm as I'd expect it.
You grabbed my hand adorned in wildflower warpaint.
You made purple out of Camellias.
We charged headfirst into the woods with bows and arrows drawn.
Crudely fashioned--sticks and rubber bands and spray paint.
We swore ourselves protectors from all the evil in the world.
You weren't born my brother but you're gonna die that way.
You ran alone
(You ran alone)
In the falling snow
I watched your bruises grow,
(Your bruises grow)
Strangely beautiful,
Purple and yellow.
You said, "Don't.
Don't take me home. Don't take me home. Don't take me home."
Your father came in angry like a thunderstorm.
He tossed you room from room and I watched color draining from your face.
Fault lines started forming underneath all of your floorboards.
We sat terrified, waiting on an earthquake.
I watched you put on a brave face.
I wanted so badly to be brave.
You ran alone
(You ran alone)
In the falling snow
Barefoot down White's Road.
I watched your bruises grow,
(Your bruises grow)
Strangely beautiful,
Purple and yellow.
You said, "Don't.
Don't take me home. Don't take me home. Don't take me home."
Whoa oh oh
Whoa oh oh oh
Whoa oh oh
Whoa oh oh oh
They kicked you out to teach you what a man is.
I don't think I'll ever know what that means.
They'll put a gun into your hand and call you weak until you're violent.
Don't believe it.
They're hateful because they're empty.
We got a chance to break the cycle.
We could be the heroes that we always said we'd be.
But don't take me home. Don't take me home. Don't take me...
Don't take me home. Don't take me home. Don't take me
Home, home.
Don't take me home. Don't take me home. Don't take me
Home, home.
Don't take me home. Don't take me home. Don't take me..

Replace the father with boyfriend in this song and it fits my life. This song helped me get away and start a new life.
You have a chance to break the cycle. You will be the hero that you always said you'd be.
Just take me home just take me home just take me home
Holy shit only 8 dislikes
how many dudes gonna try and get a purple chameleon tattoo so they do something more unconventional than hank....yet soupy said camellias.... lol
Second verse hit me hard : your father came in angry like a thunderstorm tossed you room from room and I saw color draining from your face
This song melts my heart and brings peace to some old memories.
The gutiar rifts and the way he changes from slow to fast pace singing is incredible
this song always makes me cry
once you start really listening to the lyrics all the songs on the album make you cry like a fucking baby
"Kicked you out to teach you what a man is
But I don't think I'll ever know what that means
They'll put a gun into your hand and call you weak until you're violent
Don't believe it
They're hateful cause they're empty
We've got a chance to break the cycle
We could be the heroes that we always said we'd be."
Hits so close to home for me. Btw: Anyone else think of Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly from Game Of Thrones? Sam's the one kicked out, called "weak", told to "man up", etc and Jon's the one encouraging him and telling him not to let the assholes drag him down. Just my perspective :-)
I relate to it personally as well, since for my last job I had to be around military types a lot and they weren't all friendly to a non-violent, un-macho, "alpha challenged" guy like me, haha (fuck 'em). Plus falling short of family expectations, too.
Also reminds me of the line in "Slide" by Goo Goo Dolls: "Don't suppose I'll ever know what it means to be a man. Its something I can't change, I'll live around it." So true.
But yeah, just got into this band recently...great stuff, though. Now one of my faves. Can't decide which I prefer, these last 2 albums or the slightly less serious, pop punkier earlier stuff. Oh, and Aaron West...that stuff hits home for me a lot, too :-/ Sorry for rambling, haha. Hopefully at least one person somewhat relates.
Man, all my posts on Wonder Years' and Aaron West songs, I don't think I've gotten one reply (other than my own) yet...and people say junior high/high school is alienating... :/ lol Oh well, guess I'm just "weird" like that ::shrug:: Fuck it. At least I got a like...I'll take it :)
I've had a bunch of friends die this year from drug overdoses this year and I can't tell you how much this album has helped me deal with those loses.
You weren't born my brother but you're going to die that way.... FUCK
A band that makes music from the heart
I had never cried so much as while listening to this album
But don't take me home, don't take me home, don't take me.. *breaks down into sobs*
This albums helped me through some shit, man.
Thank you guys.
This is probably by far my favorite song on this album.
fuck, this one hits home hard
So glad achievement hunter did a lets play with y'all cause I don't think I would have found out about you guys without that
Same reason I found them too lol.
I'm locked in.....
This is it. This is my favourite song on the album. Fuck that was so emotional
cul de sac part 2?
I thought he said "youre my porn hub brother" lmaooo i suck
best work
Fifteen past midnight... shit wrong song
Holy crap, I think this is my favorite song on this album! The lyrics are phenomenal!
I think it's really impressive how on this album in particular, it sounds like Dan is covering wider known social issues, but instead of saying "here is my view" he makes the songs still very personal and heartfelt.
Wow this song just took a complete 180 on my after reading the lyrics along with it holy shit
Cul-De-Sac part 2 anyone?
Both seem to be about a 'brother' (non biological, but strong friendships) that he feels/have been long since lost
Both have similar chord structures, and quiet section with build up leading into big fucken' banger of an alt. chorus/outro
Both have pretty fast, very similar tempos
Lyrics in choruses and resonate with each other sound and subject matter-
(Cul: I'm letting goooooooooo//Brave: You ran alone, you ran aloooooooone)
Just my theory anyways, listen to them back to back and see what you think, either way they're both my favourite songs from TGG and NCTH :3
yooooo I've been thinking that
yooooo I've been thinking that
yooooo I've been thinking that
Every album they release is always better than the last, omg.
all the songs on this album are masterpieces. but this song made this album worth the summer of anticipation. Not disappointed.
Are those the same 3 opening chords from Elegy for Baby Blue?
+Narzick THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING BUT I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY
+Joseph Brackett Every time it comes on my Wonder Years mix on Google play I think it's Elegy and start shouting the wrong lyrics
3:09-3:13 is heartbreaking in the best way possible
This is album is good but it feels very similar to greatest generation in the sense that it's soooo serious. I love sad songs but I don't go to The Wonder Years for songs like these.. I want some fast fun songs like local man, Logan circle, came out swinging type songs. These songs are good in their own right but I don't enjoy listening to them the way I did with classic TWY songs. This band is just getting toooo serious topically. Good album but I miss the sour patch watermelons...
+TwoScoopsXD what a wonderful observation. I had not realized that. Thank you for enlightening me.
+Andrew Ramirez They already watched his heroes be human in front of them
The album was written about a friend who died. Literally the entire album. Insensitive comment.
Does anyone know the meaning behind this song?
sounds like a case of child abuse.
"Your father came in angry like a thunderstorm. He tossed you room from room and I watched color draining from your face"
+greg peck I was thinking it might be about a friend he had that acted quite feminine just from the flower paint imagery, and his father tried to force it out of him but I'm not sure
Soupy west and the roaring years
Dude, this WHOLE album is filled with incredible imagery. It's like every song is a memory that hits so close to the heart.
Tony Mo Didn't expect you to be here
Ok so this one is hands down my favorite it hits way to close to home for me. My absolute best friend, my brother, and now my enemy this one is for you I miss you so much man.
there soupy goes again, making me cry with his lyrics
this is a fucking brutal album to sit through, like my emotions are running rampant and im about to cry and im about to go chill with some friends god damn thanks for this guys you killed it a million times over
+talksfor lifetwo The Wonder Years ALWAYS does this to me. I cried buckets last night, and I'm about to again haha. Their music truly has a way of tugging at your heartstrings. :')
most accurate description of twy ever
I've already cried to this ;-;
WOOoo... Ahe- um.. Really love this album, ty Soupy.
*applauds Soupy for alwaysss having fabulous lyrics*
+Jason LovesPWD I know, right? his lyrics kill, and bring to life, every bit of me.
so hard to choose a favorite from this album
@Jason LovesPWD I honestly still can't decide. I really really liked No Closer To Heaven and Thanks For The Ride though, so I'd probably chose one of those.
+Jason LovesABR Mine are probably Cigarettes and Saints and Stained Glass Ceilings...they're all good, but those ones make me feel the most emotional.
This song is probably my favorite lyrically.
I'm already so in love with this album is unbelievable
