Wonder Years, The - I Don't Like Who I Was Then Lyrics

Tossed around like sea glass and you rounded out my edges.
I'll feel better when the headaches go away.
I got a scar across my forehead, turning purple in the cold
From a night at Shore Memorial.
I was 16 and afraid.
Turned away, like I'm working baby face
Out of Mid-South in the 80's.
I kept a blade hidden in my wrist tape.

I think I'm growing into someone you could trust.
I want to shoulder the weight until my back breaks,
I want to run until my lungs give up.
If I could manage not to fuck this up.
If I could manage not to fuck this up.
I think enough is enough.

Hidden in the tall grass in the naked light of day,
I put my past-self in the ground.
I've been dancing on the grave.
I'm not the person that I was then,
I'm tearing him away.
I was bitter. I was careless.
I was 19 and afraid

But you deserved more from me.
I don't know why I would say those things.
But you deserved more from me and I'm trying every day.

I think I'm growing into someone you could trust.
I want to shoulder the weight until my back breaks,
I want to run until my lungs give up.
If I could manage not to fuck this up.
If I could manage not to fuck this up.
I think enough is enough.

You left me walking in circles.
You were a shot in the dark.
You were the baby teeth I buried.
You were the sounds of distant cars.

You left me walking in circles.
You were a shot in the dark.
You were the banner that says "No One"
That I tattooed across my heart.

You left me walking in circles.
You were a shot in the dark.
You're scattered like ashes across every song that I write.
You're where the light pollution starts.

I think I'm growing into someone you could trust.
I want to shoulder the weight until my back breaks,
I want to run until my lungs give up.
If I could manage not to fuck this up.
If I could manage not to fuck this up.
Enough is enough.

Wonder Years, The I Don't Like Who I Was Then Comments
  1. Joe White

This song inspired me to be a better person. Love you.

  2. Rogue Planet

My all time favorite band, loved them as an 8th grader when Suburbia came out, loved them as a tenth grader when Generation came out and so on and so forth. This band is timeless as far as I'm concerned.

  3. maxwelld23

Mixing on this record is awful , half the album is some of the best stuff they have ever wrote and half of it feels half hearted and timid. Better then upsides and sister cities but nothing on TGG or Suburbia.

  4. Andreck100

    27, STILL AFRAID

  5. Aya Afterlife

Who I aaaam hates who I've beeeen

  6. wyattf13

Hey, this song made someone's day today, quit my job, I've loved this song since it came out, you guys hit home with ordinary humans with ordinary real human problems, kudos that kind of connection is few and far between today.

On some personal shit, this week I took this girl I've been wanting to make my girlfriend for like a year now to a Wonder Years show, finally got the courage to talk to her about it from that experience, but it didn't work out and i got turned down, but since then, Soupy's lyrics have sort of become a reality for me and I really fucking appreciate this album. Getting me through some shit. Amazing concert by the way go see them.

    David Williams

TWY is peak unrequited love music

  29. MaxMorerProductions

What does he mean by this?
"You were the banner that says "no one" tattooed across my heart."

    John Wick

The traditional heart tattoo with a banner that reads ‘Mom’ is possibly one of the most common tattoos in early generations. Different variations would often replace Mom with another loved one’s name.

The visualization that Dan presents is a tattoo with a banner that reads ‘no one,’ meaning that he didn’t feel he could love anyone enough to get a tattoo saying so. That is, until this person came into the picture.

  30. Sean Murray

I just listened to this song 2 steps up using pitch shift on my Windows 7 and for some reason it's fucking awesome that way haha

  55. TheCsolina

I like this. Any recommended songs from them?

    bradwearsprada

+EightStyx how can you recommend songs with out including any from get stocked on it? Basically any song by TWY is going to be pretty rad. Get stocked on it is amazing but sounds nothing like this album and the previous. Lets Moshercise, Keystone state, and i fell in love with a ninja are all amazing songs to check out if you like the wonder years and want to hear where they started. How do you even make a list and not put melrose diner on it? As Im typing this, i just realized you dont have any songs from the upsides ether man, and you call yourself a fan...

    bradwearsprada

It looks like someone got butthurt a little.

  56. Kunaiechi

    Shriffican

+Weston Fredrickson He referenced this song in an interview with YouTuber CMPuls3. Not sure if he mentioned it on Twitter as well, but him and Soupy are good friends, and Soup even gave Rollins the record early for a birthday gift.

  73. Bethany Manning

I've honestly cried to every song they have released so far.

  74. Pick 6

The intro instrumental was so good, but after that was just sort of.. standard. I hope I'm not growing out of this band.

  75. Cassidy Potter

  76. wewlz

One of my top favorites so far. The whole album is gut wrenching and amazing.

  77. Eric Twing

Does anyone know who does the backing vocals in certain parts?

  78. Eric Twing

Does anyone know who does the backing vocals in certain parts?

    Sean Kraus

@Eric Twing I'm gonna guess that it's Matt Brasch, with him being the main backing vocalist of the band, but it could also be Casey Cavaliere as all the members besides Mike Kennedy do some vocals, and since it's only backing, not a lead part at a bridge or verse ending, it could easily be Casey. But that's only a guess, a long, dragged out, annoying as fuck guess.

    Eric Twing

Haha if anyone its Casey. I know Mat Josh and Nicks voices pretty well. It just sounds wicked different than any of them

  79. MorethanFrankie

This band never fails to amaze me, amazing!

  80. -Chris-

Damn dude idk. i want to like these songs...like I really do but they're just ehh to me. Idk why but its kinda disappointing cause they were one of my favs. ever since suburbia I just kinda fell off from them and I'm not sure why.

soupy is still my dude doeeee

  81. Jamie Hersheys

I love this. Great job The Wonder Years ❤😍

  82. Marina Serrano

    how about yes

  83. Zero Hope

Vocals dont sound as good as other fellow pop punk bands recently. And I dont mean the vocals are worse, they just sound worse. A bit muffled maybe a lower budget in the mixing or something idk im not a techie

    Johnny

Thats just the video quality. It only goes to 480p for some reason, it'll sound better on the album

  84. Matt LeClerc

Neck Deep's album was good, but this is going to be the best of the year.

  85. bby jaacks

    soooo gooood

  86. Al Geldmacher

biggest build up for an album ever.

  87. Jared Weems

Just recently found this band. Falling in love already. Ready for the new albums as I'm listening to the old

    C. Babs

    Less Soupy, More Radke.

    Gross.

    C. Babs

@ninjalemurdude hahaha that's a joke that was on a shirt a while back.

    ninjalemurdude

    @Christian Babin Oh.

  88. Mike C

Every single has been killer. I don't regret mindlessly purchasing their 123$ bundle at 3 am.

  89. Gabie Singchantha

    Wooooo!

  90. qwhzify

Mid South... What about the mid west? 😧

    j0rdeh

Mid South was a popular wrestling territory, that's what he was referencing.

  91. Sean Kraus

I read somewhere that there's a synth part in this song, but I can't hear it. does anyone know when it actually is played?

    Vinny Ptak

    @Sean Kraus around 1:30 - 1:50 I can hear it

    Sean Kraus

@Vinny Ptak oh I hear it now, thanks man

    Jake Ford

Its actually a guitar lead with tapping.

  92. Jonny Vacca

    YESSSSSSSSSSS

  93. Kody Nicholson

They've gotten better every album. So cool to see a band progress over time like this and be so good.

    mitchelwavra124

Haha, I tested this theory on my brother, but with The Greatest Generation and Get Stoked On It! and he thought that they were different artists. This whole concept is amazing.

    Kody Nicholson

+Mitchel Edward Wavra hopefully the fans go along. Too many fans want the same album over and over. Jay Z has a great lyric about it "you want my old shit then buy my old album." Artist have to grow and develop. Wonder years are a much better band now than the were every album before this one.

    bigboss 187

@Kody Nicholson I agree with you 100 percent, one of the few bands that progressed in a good way

    Kody Nicholson

+bigboss 187 they're the first band I've heard in a while that makes me want to play and be in a band again. That makes me think, damn I wish I wrote that. It's really great.

    suda moon

    it's joji (yes)

    Andrew Cavallo

This singer is very good at putting strong emotion into his songs through the way he sings. It’s quite frankly a quality that’s hard to find in a lot of musicians.

  96. Cielo Acl

    AMAZING

  97. Malaki Rovelto

I pre ordered the album and I now I have it. is it supposed to do that?
