Wonder, Stevie - They Won't Go When I Go Lyrics

No more lying friends
Wanting tragic ends
Though they do pretend
They won't go when I go

All those bleeding hearts
With sorrows to impart
Were right here from the start
And they won't go when I go

And I'll go where I've longed
To go so long
Away from tears

Gone from painful cries
Away from saddened eyes
Along with him I'll bide
Because they won't go when I go

Big men feeling small
Weak ones standing tall
I will watch them fall
They won't go when I go

And I'll go where I've longed
To go so long
Away from tears

Unclean minds mislead the pure
The innocent will leave for sure
For them there is a resting place
People sinning just for fun
They will never see the sun
For they can never show their faces
There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner
Who will take more than he will give
He ain't hardly gonna give

The greed of man will be
Far away from me
And my soul will be free
They won't go when I go

Since my soul conceived
All that I believe
The kingdom I will see
'Cause they won't go when I go

When I go
Where I'll go
No one can keep me
From my destiny.

  46. L.... L....

Check out the chance the rapper cover version

  47. h.... j....

Heard this on MJs beautiful tribute from Stevie. How tragic but beautiful.

  48. 8.... ....

Sorry but I suspect the original title (and chorus line) must have been They Won't Go WHERE I Go ... god's heaven that is, maybe Stevie felt its a bit too hateful to use the word WHERE so he changed it to WHEN .. just guessing ...

    8.... ....

88feji Nah, if that’s what Stevie penned that’s usually what Stevie penned

  49. D.... R....

    just heard mr michaels version

um sounds a tad, thirsty, timing, far from wonders at times.

    I'm still sort of impressed.

    the song/music is so beautiful

oh! George Michael's version optimized studio reverbing also

    D.... R....

Dorian Rice because he is trying to do his best, Stevie Wonder soars beyond the stratosphere, especially since he wrote this song...George wouldn’t have anything to sing if Stevie didn’t write this one

  50. S.... M....

    Thank you Jenifer Lewis! #MotherOfBlackHollywood

    s.... ....

that's also how i found this song. i just watched the documentary the other day

    s.... ....

That doc was so so interesting and poignant and shows that we often don't know what we have until it's gone. A real talent who left a lasting legacy.

    s.... ....

Well I’m glad to be an OG, I have the pleasure of hearing the the albums except for Stevie’s first couple of albums when I was simply called “Little Stevie”, but I remember seeing him on television variety shows, singing “Uptight” and so many others after that...

    s.... ....

    Stevie is the TRUTH. Please

  72. D.... S....

I'm sorry Stevie you are wonderful but George Michael did it better.

    D.... S....

No disrespect to Mr Wonder. But George had his vocals on point and to have the balls to redo this and hit it out of the park is beyond compare. You will be missed.

    D.... S....

    You outcha Damn Mind!!!

    D.... S....

never heard that before, but to each....

    D.... S....

    cute. just heard micheals

    D.... S....

First George himself admitted that he could not touch this version, and he never sang it live...so with the student is not better than the teacher, and as a singer myself, Stevie is a universe and George is a small planet

It's never too late to discover Stevie, Naomi! You should try to listen to all his albums from 1970 to 1976, there are some brilliant pieces on there

  75. M.... H....

Anybody else love those extended dominants?

    M.... H....

I do. Stevie really listeend to Chopin!

  76. A.... R....

There are two kinds of people in the comments: Those who appreciate this song for the gorgeous composition that it is, and those who will blindly love anything even remotely close to the subject of Jesus.

  77. G.... ....

Cycle of Fourths brought me here ; )

  78. l.... d....

    Awesome

  79. L.... W....

George Michael's version brought me here. I've loved this song for years sang by George. Love hearing Stevie's version. Beautifully composed.

    L.... W....

Lisa Whitten that’s good, Stevie is the composer, this song came from the mind of Stevie Wonder

  80. S.... t....

    he's an American treasure

  81. J.... S....

Either this Amazing song was way ahead of it's time or the world or the people in it rather have always been the way he speaks of in this song. I would say that either or both of those theories have truth in them. It just amazes me, that a song that is over 40 years old is so relevant to the current time we're in. Call me crazy. I don't care, because I've heard much crazier things said than what I'm about to say, but I believe Stevie Wonder, as well as other gifted song writers through out time are Prophets for the current times. No joke intended, but this gifted human being sees a lot more with his mind, body and soul than most people do with their eyes. Stevie Wonder Is the greatest gift from God, as far as song writer's go. I have listened to this song since I was a young child, in the late 80's and I understand why he wrote this song at the time he did. It's because such a meaningful, powerful and relevant message wouldn't be received very well in the time we live in. Sadly, people are only interested in negativity and drama now days, for the most part. I could go on and on about this subject that I'm speaking on, but I'll wait for a few responses before I say anything else. I love a good, intelligent and I guess what would be considered by most as "crazy or odd" conversation lol. Come on and let the comments roll in, tell me how you see it...
In any case, a good debate or conversation, with meaning, is a good way to enhance brain function. I challenge anyone who reads this to challenge yourself and spark a good, clean and intelligent debate with me. I mean, I called Stevie Wonder a modern day PROPHET.... Surely, there has to be a group of people who think that's crazy, as well as a group of people who agree with me. This is just a little fun, yet very interesting conversation topic. No insults please, if you can help it. If you can't help it, then I guess it is what it is. I'm really just interested in what people think, how they FEEL and what they BELIEVE about this particular topic. Thank you very much in advance to all who might participate in this. With that said. Good morning to all and may you be blessed in everything positive that you try to accomplish today and while you're out today, trying to make your situation in life better, don't forget to try helping another human being who is in need. It's not always money that people want or need. A lot of times, they just need a very little act of kindness, so they believe humanity still has a chance.

  82. Z.... H....

never heard of this by Stevie

  83. I.... T....

i know how you feel stevie... pray for the lost.. 😢

  84. S.... G....

the beginning can be interpreted and valued but the second verse where he starts preaching religious gospel is worthless.

the last time i heard this song, I was on my way home to lay my mother to rest. As much as this song saddened me, I had this sense of peace that she was in a place that brought her complete peace.....I still believe that. 😊😊

C'mon Stevie. I have respected & admired you since you first hit the scene. Humans are gonna do what humans do. I don't hurt anybody, but i've done a few..things...that the religious may see as sin. It's almost impossible not too. So give a brother a break, Stevie! I love your music but don't put a brother down. And...you've done a lil bit of sinnng too Stevie .... !We'll all be allright.

  93. K.... K....

Oh, but the world does (speak of him as one of the greatest geniuses in history). One of them. And the genres do not matter. Had he been born in the XVIII or XX or century - he would be another Mozart...or Rachmaninoff. Or Puccini... except Stevie Wonder writes his own lyrics, while opera composers had to rely on librettos written by professional writers...That's Wonder's genius - not only a composer and instrumentalist, but also a poet.

  94. D.... V....

George Michael covered this on "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" He was said to never perform it live, because he felt it wasn't as good as Stevie. It was a great effort by GM.

    D.... V....

David Via he actually did perform it live....I was there and it was beautiful. ..this was early 90s. Might be the only time he sang it live, but he did at least once..I'm sure it's on YouTube somewhere

    D.... V....

There is a Netflix Documentary about George and there is a clip of them singing together... OH MY GOD SO GOOD.

  95. u.... ....

This is up there with Debussy or something, a classic composition.

    u.... ....

    I agree.
