This comes from the traditional prayer. The first sentence of the prayer is simply a direct quote from the Bible of what the angel told Mary and what Elizabeth told her in Scripture.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.”

The second sentence of the prayer is asking for her intercession. Intercession of Saints is Biblically sound. -“ Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.”

*For the Protestants, please understand: Hail is used in the sense of “Greetings” not as in worshipping her. Although of course she is worthy of our admiration and love, but only God is to be worshipped. Secondly, when we say Mother of God we mean “mother of Jesus when he came in the flesh”. Obviously Jesus existed eternally as the Eternal Word of God. We do not elevate Mary to a deity or something with the expression Mother of God.

If this still bothers you remember this: Mary gave Jesus His flesh. God was the Father. The same flesh Mary gave Jesus is the same flesh He rose from the grave and ascended into Heaven with and was transfigured in. That is why she was kept sinless. That is why we say that in her perfect obedience to God she crushed the serpent’s head - by being a vessel for the Savior to actually conquer all evil. She is the New Eve, the living Ark of the New Covenant. Jesus did not inherit original sin through Mary. Through a singular grace of God, God kept Mary from the stain of sin in order that the Son would be free from the stain of original sin.

It is a very beautiful song Ave Maria. It reminds me always of how important the intercession of the Mother of God for us to be safe from the evil one. She leds us to Christ the only begotten son of the Living God and Christ to the His Eternal Father. GOD bless!

I know this comment is 5 years old but understand Jesus, not mother mary, is the path to the Heavenly Father. If it were Mother Mary, then there would be no point in Jesus's death :) God gives us Angels to watch over us, not saints...Mary was an honorable person, but not an idol we should pray to. God said worship me only, and that we should have no other idols. Mary did not lead Jesus to God, for Jesus IS God and always was WITH God. Written in Genesis. Jesus came to save MARY, not the other way around. Be blessed!
