Wishbone Ash - Throw Down The Sword Lyrics
Throw down the sword,
The fight is done and over,
Neither lost, neither won.
To cast away the fury of the battle
And turn my weary eyes for home.
There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only hoping for an answer.
Throw down the sword,
And leave the glory -
A story time can never change.
To walk the road, the load I have to carry -
A journey's end, a wounded soul.
There were times when I stood at death's own door

Wishbone Ash Throw Down The Sword Comments
What a great way to end an incredible album, definitely one of the greatest of all time
48 years later still timeless, love you dad
No problem with Argus. Very nice!
Das ist ich werde immer unterbrochen
einfach geil diese Mucke
Amazing song
Awful remix
Drums sound atrocious
Nick Turner yep. And way too loud in the intro, they ruin the crescendo
Simply Masterpiece 🎵🎼🎶🎸😎👊
The Real "Wishbone Ash" 🎵🎼🎶🎸😎👊
Fucking Wishbone Ash.......... yeah......
Man, this blows me away! Where am I?
listen between 2:19 and 3:23 that makes me feel free
This is the greatest prog rock album ever.
Iron Maiden are absolutely in debt with WA . The intro to throw down the sword says it all
Saw them at reading festival, around 74. Headlining
pink floyd where is gilmour for he is already here
how good is that
The greatest iteration of a touch of English folk with English Prog rock/Blues/Guitar music ever.
one off the best songs of this fantastic album ! Holy Moses what is this super !
One of the bests album's.... Complete
Only recently started listening to this band, and my god I did not realise just how much of an influence these guys had on my favourite bands. Just in this song alone I can pick up so many parts which have had an influence on other songs. The intro sounds a lot like the intro of No More Lies - Iron Maiden. 1:02 onwards sounds like Afraid to Shoot Strangers - Iron Maiden. 1:43 I get a little bit of Revelations - Iron Maiden. 2:12 sounds like Fade to Black - Metallica, I even hear a little bit of Free Bird during that part.
Fantastic melodic blues rock..
God, that moment at 4:53
I have never ever heard of a two-guitar solo where one plays down, the other up and then they meet each other .... man alive not only is this musical genius it was then way ahead of its time and still holds it today! ... Brilliant ... absolutely bloody BRILLIANT!
That two guitars duet is the finest I have ever heard. Got this the day it came out. Still today is brilliant! I was in Ibiza many years ago. Got up for a piss, four in the morning. Disco on the beach...shite all night...then this!! Stood in the dark watching the lazer lights till it finished. Knew my mate Phat Phil had put it on. Nice one dude!
This song is so badass, the twin guitars just melt me with emotion starting at 3:40, then 4:53 omg it makes me want to cry. This is what Steve Harris had in mind when he founded Iron Maiden. Maiden pays homage to these guys, Wishbone Ash is so freakin' great!
This duel solo makes me shiver
Both played by Andy Powell, by the way.....
This song........
Wishbone Ash: topband
Sublime!
I am already high just listening to memorable throw down the sword. So thrilling
I think iron maidens afraid to shoot strangers in the making
They don't make music like this anymore i swear!!
If only todays Kids listen great music
Many famous bands has steal ideas from WA: Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Lynyrd Skynyrd, even Pink Floyd. Expecially from Argus masterpiece. Example, this end solo is very similar to end High hopes solo
Afraid to shoot strangers
Argus one of the best album of music
Thanks to maiden and steve harris to point this particular album as a main influence. This is a stunning achievement. Love it.
The red jump get's bigger when you drink a couple of bottles of red wine saint emilion grand cru,PFF,
incredible musicians they where, love it,it gives me peace in my mind.
Great Song.
"Put your raygun to my head, baby." Full metal jacket . . . The Robe.
Fishhook "destiny" . . . kind of permanent and cruel.
haha,nemogu da se odvojim,
vracam 3,4 puta za redom
predivno...jedna od najlepsih,najmocnijih,najneznijih solo deonica...
Not bad for a song that gives you vocal track after 2 minutes!! :D Thumbs up!
Argus was a masterpiece and WA were a top band. Thanks for the great music!!
Increible verdad?,esta es la magia de la música...
Real Art exemplary creativity.
One of my biggest disappointments in my music likes over the last 50 years is WHY didn't Ash move on from their great first 3 albums ; Wishbone Ash ; Argus and There's the Rub ( I discount Live Dates which was fuckin terrible )
Ha!Beowulf
Wishbone Ashes' milestone album.
G you are so right.
Why OH WHY did I sell my decking guitar!
Argus was the first album I ever bought, back in about 1973. It is STILL one of the very best albums I ever bought. Every track is superb, but 'Throw Down The Sword' is the true classic. Beautiful, soaring guitar twin lead solo and in my opinion it is the finest album closer track I have ever heard. Perfection !
BTW I've seen comments on here suggesting Martin & Ted Turner are brothers. They are not related.
This song was played at my dad's funeral and I don't think we could've picked a better song
Saw them about this time at the Chez Club above the Red Lion Leytonstone. Very good, honest band.
One of my favourite songs of all time.
I believe ARGUS is the most complete rock record of all time. Love this track. The album has electric, acoustic and great storytelling.
Old mate in jail.t,his song saved h8ß life xxxx really xx luv wah. Roll on 4 eva
the intro obviously influenced a lot of Maiden's later stuff...... they have several very similar-sounding intros
Ladies and Gentleman, THIS is WISHBONE ASH.
JUst dicovered another Britisch band called Wytch Hazel who are obvious very into Wishbone Ash and then mainly into their Argus album. In my ears they sound like a mix between Wshbone Ash , Thin Lizzy with some Jethro Tull influences..give it a try through this link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qasgKb4jk78
Fabulous tune and dueling guitars. . . Re comments twin guitars don't forget Peter Green and Danny Kirwan of The real Mac - Arguably the best twin guitar attack ever. I'm sure Wishbone Ash and many more were fans x
best guitar blending ever
the only version to listen too x i got to dedicate this to my dad,and Woody woodhouse, and mr pat Harrington.. thanks for steering the ship xx
https://youtu.be/XPOh6KK7tt0
This was my Dad's funeral song. He chose this when he knew he was losing his battle with lung cancer. It means a lot!
Danny avidan sent me here
Another classic by Wishbone Ash....thanks for the music guys!!
A pair of Iron maiden songs from two different eras, have a strong reminiscence to these song. The first one Revelations from Piece of Mind, a Bruce Dickinson song, and the other one Afraid to shoot strangers from Fear of the dark, i think a Harris song. Strong influences at least
And Pink Floyd
Intro of that song ~ afraid to shoot strangers
Nice feeling when you see the connection between two songs
Absolutely brilliant. Throw Down the Sword, brings a tear to my eye, amazing. Still have my original Argus album - a masterpiece up there with the best!
I think this is my favourite song of all time.
That solo...chills all over my body....Amazing song
Well this is fucking gay
magnificent,and SO English,and thats never a bad thing :-)
100 years hence this will be described as today's classical music.
ΤΗΕRE ARE NOT THE ORIGINALS SONGS FROM THE RECORD,SUCH A SHAME BECAUSE IS ONE OF THE BEST ROCK ALBUM EVER AND REMIDS SO MUCH.
Super underrated. One of my absolute favorite guitar solos, glad I am in this generation, we get to see the finest moments in music, and look at anything from our fingertips.
2018 Still listening
jako mocna i snazna.....predivno
I played this song on repeat during a 1 hour walk into work. None of the other songs on my player seemed up to the task.
THROW DOWN THE SWORD AND O FORTUNA AND YOU'LL THINK YOU'RE FIGHTING IN A AT CAMELOT.
simply the best
The lyrics kinda remember me of veteran of the psychic wars, two wondrous songs.
Wishbone Ash's battlefield is Real & Blue Oyster Cult's is in the Mind but I get where you're coming from & yes two fabulous songs (& bands) ...
VERY GOOD !!!!!
I think this is one of the most beautiful guitar solo in history of rock music. Unfortunately, still so unknow and underrated... Absolute masterpiece!
Plenty of people knew Wishbone Ash in the UK in the 1970's ... losing Martin Turner in 1981 & later splitting into 2 bands didn't help keep their legacy alive ... a great album will always be a great album though ..
@Steven Wilkinson 2019 and Martin's band plays alot better version of this song than Powell's band.
@Craig Dukes Seeing either band now would be like seeing an upgraded cover band ... I saw them in 1980 with Turner, Powell, Upton & Wisefield & they were fantastic in concert ... saw them a year later without Martin & they were already significantly less interesting & accomplished ....no one is seeing "Wishbone Ash" these days (imo) ...
Can only concur, after listening to the album since its release, this album now ranks amongst the very best complete masterpieces of modern music.
Came here to check Steve Harris major influence (I'm an Iron Maiden fan since the '80s) and found this wonderful guitar work.
Speechless...
I saw both Wishbone Ash & Iron Maiden live in 1980 & 81 (twice & three times respectively) ... both were fabulous acts at that time .. Maiden had energy, freshness & vitally but Ash were just sheer CLASS ...
Same here and my thoughts exactly!
yea he copied afraid to shoot strangers from this song smh
Reminds me of my father who showed me this song 25 years ago.
Same here, but about 45 years ago :-)
Yep, dad's will do that.
oooooooo yes love it
At this time, less than 200 thousand of us have heard this song, this version, is not right.......
Probablement un des meilleurs albums de rock de tous les temps !!
I saw these guys in 1973 when "Wishbone Four" came out....both Turner brothers were still with the band..i will never forget it..i still have my pictures i took there...Andy Powell with the Red flying V guitar....I'll never forget "Rock and Roll Widow"....they are very underrated....i don't think they made it very well, commerical-wise, but their style and medieval image is very unique and they have always been one of my favorite rock bands of all time......
A good song to start a game of DnD/Pathfinder
superlative
I've always said that Argus is one of the top 5 rock albums ever recorded, and nothing I've heard since has made me change my mind. It is total perfection from every instrument on every track.
Quo Vadis......Can do nothing but agree with you my friend....magic
Absolutely Agree. My Top 5 Would Be (In No Particular Order):
Argus - Wishbone Ash
Permanent Waves - Rush
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
Machine Head - Deep Purple
a major influence on iron maiden apparently..................... splinta (73)...
jacob marly done a good version of this years ago bristol band
Throw down the sword,

The story I heard about the lead was that Andy laid down a lead track and started to play against it on playback and the engineer happened to be recording. So the two guitars are Andy. Every beginning guitar player should study these guys. Lesson in how to use pentatonic and Dorian scales in a dramatic fashion. Andy is an underrated guitarist. He seems to be an unlimited idea machine as well. I remember I was heartbroken when Ted left the band...
