Wishbone Ash - Silver Shoes Lyrics

Silver lady, lost in a haze,
Regretting what you are
The memory of your claim to fame
Is left to bitter stars.
It hurts when people let you know
You're not a movie star
It's harder now than yesterday,
As the lines begin to show.

Waiting, crazy hotel lady,
To try and get some wine,
Waiting for the elevator
To take you to your blind.

Silver shoes and see-through blues
Hit me right between the eyes.

Cocktail bars, straight-edge cars,
Are your dreams come true.
Tomorrow shouldn't know it,
But now it's showin' through and through.

It hurts when people let you know
That you're not a movie star.

It's scary when you think this album is over 40 years old now and yet it still sounds as fresh today as it did way back then.
I'm 64 years old now and feel blessed to know that I grew up in a generation when music was at its best. The good old NINETEEN SEVENTIES. Music was so versatile then, on both sides of the pond. The kids today don't know what they've missed.
Thank you so much for putting this album on your site.
    Brian Carruthers
    A very appreciative Englishman

Sir, we are two now ! I am Romanian, at the same age as you are, and I confess you spoke the truth ! There will never be such music as the seventies offered us ! May you long live and God bless you ! respectfully, GELU BATIR, Romania, Rm.Valcea town, the 16th of July, 2019

    @gelu batir

Thank you very much for your thoughts, I really appreciate that. Isn't it amazing that music is an international language that connects people together from all over the world, irrespective of race, colour or religion offering the joy of listening to it in your own home when you want to.
I have put a lot of music on music on YouTube and if you are looking for music from the 1970s if you add my name to the end of it you might find what you're looking for. For examle: To give you an idea of what music I like look at:

My first record collection Brian Carruthers which are artists outside the USA and Canada. Also part 2
My 2nd record collection Brian Carruthers are artists from the USA and Canada. Also part 2
My 3rd record collection is a selection of live albums
My 4th record collection are greatest hits by artists outside USA and Canada
My 5th Record Collection are greatest hits by artists from the USA and Canada
I have also put box sets from the Allman Brothers Band, The Beatles to U2.
Actually if you are looking for something that you can't find perhaps I have it, and if I do I'll post it on YouTube for you.
You take care and say hello to your family for me.
    Brian C.
Don't forget, let me know if you're looking for something. Why buy it if you can listen to it on YouTube.
Here in the UK I pay a £11.99 a month subscription for unlimited free music, and movies. I have downloaded hundreds of items so it is well worth the money.
    Best wishes

Many people say that Argus was their best album, (understandably), but this is my favourite album of theirs.

  6. S.... C....

    awesome awesome bloody awesome

  7. P.... H....

    Damn...if I were only 20 y/o again.

  8. P.... H....

Not sure if it's Andy or Laurie who does that AMAZING guitar solo...but thank you...after all these decades it never ceases to take my breath away.

  9. P.... H....

I don't know for sure, but this has haunted me for over 40 years...was this song inspired by the movie "Sunset Boulevard"

  10. H.... ....

    possibly the best album ever

  11. A.... E....

    lost in a haze.........

  12. S.... H....

Just brilliant, bought this in 1974!!

  13. C.... S....

Song "Hometown" sounds like a cross between Steely Dan and Joe Walsh era Eagles.

  14. C.... S....

Just listened to this album for the first time in 2018. Much better than the prior prog boogie woogie stuff. Also, this came out a year before Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and it sound like Floyd was influenced by the style and production of this album. Also with Floyd's Animals album. Listen to Periphone from this album, then listen to Floyd's "Pigs" from Animals. The beat and guitar textures are almost identical to David Gilmour's. There's the Rub is the best Floyd album Floyd never made.

  15. R.... P....

    Twin guitar heaven

  16. R.... M....

Found this tonight by remembering the song I had not heard for a long time. Put in 'Silver shoes' and there it was !

  20. h.... s....

everyone always comments on the twin guitars or the Martin on the bass.  no one ever comments on how good Upton is. so I will.... damn he is good.

  28. S.... W....

    Class album !!!

  29. s.... ....

One of my favorite albums of all time. I can still remember the day I bought it in '74 at a record store in Inglewood, CA. Check out Martin & Andy's autobiographies, 'No Easy Road' and 'Eyes Wide Open'. Very interesting reads!

    s.... ....

Would that happen to have been CRANES' RECORD & TAPES ? I think it was on La Cientiga?

  30. k.... h....

just a killer band . you had to hear them live . the bass player singer was great. this is the 2nd line up. the original guitar player left and was replaced by weisfield. i knew andy powel great guy. these guys were prob the first to do guitar harmoneys before the almond bros. it was a guitar band showing off a flying v and gibson thunderbird. how great is that. i remember talking to rory galligar back then and he loved them. best , ken harck

    k.... h....

The Allman brothers were around way before Wishbone Ash ...
    Check your history .
Classic twin guitar interplay on 'Eat a Peach' and 'Live At the fillmore' and 'Brothers and Sisters' ...
All recorded before this album was released and in fact before 'Ash ' were formed .
The Allman Joys were using that twin guitar interplay back in 1969...
Laurie Wisefield 's previous band was 'Home' check them out especially their 2nd album 'Home' 1972...
They were using that twin guitar thing as well

  31. F.... S....

    bien excelent

  32. P.... C....

    Great band - nice song

  33. k.... s....

I've had this out of print cassette for years. Very hard to find and rare. People in the states don't appreciate groups like the Ash.

    k.... s....

    Agreed!
Missed them at Brid Spa, but saw them at Hull 'New Theatre'.
While we were in the bar... to announce time, they had 'The King Will Come' intro, on a loop.

It was perfect!.... the New Theatre setup put us right there with the band.
    Good times :)

    k.... s....

"People in the states don't appreciate groups like the Ash."

Wanna bet? You don't know the "States".

    k.... s....

Yes my very rare cassette plays great

    k.... s....

Appreciate British rock way more than American rock.

    k.... s....

@Patrick McCloskey You got that right Patrick!

  34. I.... M....

Probably saw this band more times than any other in the 70's? They were awesome!

  35. t.... k....

    今でも心に残る名曲ですね、

    t.... k....

It is a masterpiece that remains in the mind even now

    t.... k....

    You take that back!!

  36. R.... V....

That's what I'm talking about - an awesome band.

  37. B.... K....

This band is like the best kept secret in Rock n' Roll history.

    B.... K....

They weren't in Europe when I was there in Germany in the USAF from 1974 to 1976. I saw them at Ludwigshaven and I think in Frankfurt. They were very popular there at that time. I wonder if they still have those guitars they played at that time which included a couple of very nice looking classic Gibson's as I recall??

    B.... K....

Andy Powell would likely have them.

    B.... K....

Agreed. Along with Be Bop Deluxe. If you don't know them, listen to Futurama, a 1975 album.

    B.... K....

@chuxtuff Indeed they have. I have seen them twice quite recently, and it was very well worth the fee. To be precise: Andy Powell was the only member of the original line-up on stage, but he has managed to find a couple of really good musicians to play with him. Very enjoyable 'no frills, no gadgets, no nonsense' concerts in quite small venues,
And Powell indeed played the original Gibsons (mostly the famous 'flying vee'), but Bob Skeat on bass basically used a five string Music Man Stingray which sounded good but not exactly the same as the Thunderbirds Martin Turner used to play.

    B.... K....

Argus is the greatest guitar album of all time. Phoenix is the best guitar song of all time. This is also a great song.

  38. b.... ....

I bought this when it came out. Still sounds great 42 years later.

    b.... ....

    I too 1975

    b.... ....

    Yes Mr. Washington °()°

  39. J.... P....

Brilliant indeed !!! Martin Turner song style writing.

    J.... P....

  40. L.... A....

The sound from the first note is outstanding-----and a big shout out to Steve Upton whose perfectly understated but perfect drumming is often overlooked.. What a great drummer!!!!

    L.... A....

    Larry Austman .your adrumer

  41. B.... O....

Love these guy's music. Saw them live in Houston a few months ago, I know it's not the original band but those guys still know how to deliver some fine music. My alltime favorite by them was their fourth album.

  42. M.... C....

best song by them hands down! my favorite song!

  43. T.... D....

41 years ago ??? OMG.... Rock Symphony you betcha.....unbelievable guitars.......MANDOLIN....awesome drumming......fantastic solo....Martin T on vocals and on fire..and with those tricky bass lines to boot...one of their best ever tracks......throw in some dual guitar to hit the ball out of the park....it doesn't get any better than this....

    T.... D....

    Indeed Trevor

  44. D.... J....

Wonderful, a rock symphony all on its own. perfect.

  45. p.... c....

this is my favorite Wishbone Ash track

  46. A.... M....

Silver lady lost in a haze

  47. S.... M....

Absolutely timeless, from the first album in '70 to this.  Interestingly, you can hear the change from Ted to Laurie in the guitar pieces on this album>

    S.... M....

Apart from Live Dates ,its best thing theyve ever done ,Locked In was shite

    S.... M....

+Philip Bainbridge I grew up locked in, that album made me burst out. Cut your shite...

    S.... M....

Locked In was a throwaway to fulfill their contract at the time. Still, some decent Ash.

  48. E.... C....

    Super Brilliant !!!

    Yuma, AZ,  1977.  Dig it.
