Wishbone Ash - Handy Lyrics

Was sat down by my fire, hear a voice of desire,
Want to be friends again.
I keep tellin' you,man, she's only a pain.
She don't fit in my scene,
She don't fit in my world no more.
And the best has to stay,
Keep knockin' on my door. She's gone away,
We're kickin' the thoughts around the floor.

just spotted i think this is their most popular track on here?

  16. m.... j....

as a Wishbone aficionado, this is up there, is this the track where they were so stoned they couldn’t ever finish it? but obviously the guy in the studio eventually did. that’s part of its charm. Hello Andy and Mart
    We’re all still here. haha.

  18. C.... D....

The tune that forever hooked me as a fan of Wishbone Ash. I was fortunate to see the original members...twice.

  19. D.... C....

Bought this album when it first came out. Had a jump on one of the tracks that pissed me so much I went and bought it again! Saw them many times in the UK and never ever disappointed, they were very tight. Love 'em.

  20. U.... M....

I am so glad that my brother is 10 years older than me and liked Wishbone Ash. So I could listen to them when I was a kid and never stopped loving them. Great music, wonderful guitar sound!

listening to this song is the only way i can do public transportation

  31. S.... W....

For me one of the very best Wishbone Ash tracks ever!!!!

    S.... W....

agree, think it’s because they let themselves go, sometimes they tried to control and allude to fashion which was not always their strong point, but Andy did some good contemporary stuff through the years.

    S.... W....

@mags jay Your statement is spot on.

  32. S.... Y....

For those who like bass solos listen to FUBB.

  33. S.... Y....

Wishbone Ash were prog rock before prog rock was invented.

    S.... Y....

Prog Rock has it's roots in mid 60's, so there were several proto-prog albums (Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band etc.) and prog bands (Greatful Dead, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Mothers Of Invention, Procol Harum, Caravan, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues etc) before Wishbone Ash debuted.

    S.... Y....

Hey man, it was just a personal throwaway remark, not meant to be a definitive statement. When I was a child growing up in the 50s and 60s we did not have a television and so the radio was on all the time.

I remember all the late 50s and 60s hits from the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and others as well as my Dad's Jazz and Big Band and Rock and Roll and Blues records from the 30s/40s/50s.

I remember having records from all the bands that you mention ( and some that you don't, ie I asked for the first King Crimson album as a present in 1968 and played it to death).

I still maintain that Wishbone Ash was in a class of its/their own.

  34. o.... b....

    that's some shammin ghit

  35. S.... Y....

Wishbone Ash's first three albums were prog rock before prog had been invented.

  36. U.... S....

    😎😍

  37. F.... V....

A Legendary jam session completely ruined at 9:28.

  38. m.... d....

My favourite Wishbone Ash track x

  39. y.... d....

great intro, look into the sun

  40. y.... d....

This is one off the most beautiful music from wishbone, I was 14 and enjoying so much this fantastic sound.

  41. B.... M....

Incredible musicianship. This is from side 2 of their debut album, featuring only 2 songs, Handy and Phoenix.

    B.... M....

One of the greatest 2nd sides of vinyl ever.

  42. f.... ....

Let me say first of all I loved this album and rushed out to buy it at the time, and I still love it.
However, at the time it was almost compulsory for a band to include a long pointless instrumental on their debut album (King Crimson's Moonchild, Blind Faith's Do What You Want, to name but two), and as often as not with an excessively long drum solo (honestly, who wants to sit and listen to a drum solo?) ... and I'm afraid WA were no exception. I love all the other songs on this album but I just can't sit through the whole of this track. It doesn't go anywhere, it doesn't tell a story, so count me out.

  43. T.... G....

Always wanted to know,Clampton, whomever how these guys faired in England, bad ass!!

  44. T.... G....

Bad the fuck ass bass!! the tone! Rickenbacher I believe

  45. F.... B....

    What happened to the Turners?

    F.... B....

Martin is still active, Ted is semi-retired but recently made some guest appearances on Martin's gigs

EDWARD THEN CAME BERRY OAKLEY, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS MOUNTAIN JAM BASS SOLO

  47. P.... G....

excellent bass solo from a great band

  48. K.... J....

    What an inspirational band!!!

  49. m.... c....

    Qué belleza Dios!! :')

  50. T.... G....

    wish bone is bad

  51. T.... P....

The bass solo is like its own language... telling a story... my God what other bass player does that! This bass player is a genius, the bottom line.

    T.... P....

Also, the drum solo 8 minutes in is unbelievable. Great band.

    T.... P....

just play "live at Rockpalast"(1976) and You wiil hear how right You are...@Steven Wilkinson

    T.... P....

due to the fact perhaps Martin on bass here was previously a guitar player and always included melody, which also is the name of his daughter.

    T.... P....

Because the twin leads Andy and Ted were so bloody good the other two are generally overshadowed somewhat, but as you say, Martin is an amazing bass guitarist ( perhaps cos he used to play lead?) and Steve Upton is way underrated as a drummer

    T.... P....

@Captain Strangiato I remember discovering that album the same month as the White Album, Ummagumma and the Yes Album some 22 years ago... Even if "Argus" gets all the praise, I hold "Wishbone Ash" and even "Pilgrimage" in very high regard... Both albums with a great biting edge.

    R.... O....

    @Stephen
    Handy released - 1970
    Green Grass released in 1975

So technically Green Grass sounds like Handy.

    R.... O....

it’s like the best rock riff but underplayed and not used in a commercial way. if it had been, these guys would have been millionaires in 1979.

  64. M.... ....

We played this tune continuously in 1970, but never realized the title was was nod To WC Handy, the Father of the Blues...(we didn't have the Internet to fill in those blanks in 1970.)

Blimey, I thought it meant the bass player was a bit...you know. Which Martin is

  66. v.... ....

hi Quin Overman, my name is Franz Oevermann. Nearly the same name.  I´m from Germany. Never seen an english Overman before. Lovely Greetings. I´m a longtime Wishbone Ash fan since the beginning. Seen them over 100 times live. They are were and be a part of my life.  If i should be right they have bween played "Handy" in 1970/1971 in L.A. ´s Wiskey a go go Club". I have a copy (cassette) of this concert. I myself can´t belief this. Happy!!! I never see them play it live. What a shame.

  67. A.... S....

I really really really want to pick my way all the way through this song on bass from start to finish..Sadly, I am self-taught and no one in town is willing to try to help me because it's too long. :( such a badass bass line from a badass track.

    A.... S....

+Andrew Smith And it spans too many styles and rythms to get used to easily.

    A.... S....

+Andrew Smith I've managed my way transcribing the bass line about half way through until the end of the second bass solo. Then I got tired and it has been waiting me to finish it some time now. From my own experience it's the best idea to try write the whole thing down, otherwise you'll never remember it.

The intro has a rather simple D minor tonality, then D major with the occasional A and G minors thrown in there before getting back to D minor. First guitar section repeats Dm-F-Am throughout. Second solo explores D minor scale further. Maybe this might get you started.

    A.... S....

+Andrew Smith I love this track I tune the bass string E down to D for the first section for the resonance.

  68. p.... ....

Wishbone Ash Handy for Pershephone Warm tears.

  72. F.... L....

I found a promotional copy of this album in a stack of records outside the college radio station at Lehigh U. in 1971.  Most of the promotional albums stunk, but this one stood out.  Who could imagine dual lead guitars!!!  Phoenix is also a great song.

  73. j.... ....

    Great album.....

  74. J.... A....

Are these guys still together? And where are you touring? Have ya ever been to Michigan? I would love seen you guys live.

    J.... A....

+Jesse A Olivares According to wikipedia they are still together, they even released another album in 2014.

    J.... A....

+Jesse A Olivares They are touring England and Holland right now, Oct 2015...

    J.... A....

Dang! Would love to see these guys.

    J.... A....

+Jesse A Olivares Only one original member though. :(

    J.... A....

+Jesse A Olivares ...they broke up years ago...however Martin Turner is still carrying on with 3 other members under the name "Martin Turner (founding member and original Bass player) Ex Wishbone Ash"...they tour England and Europe ......Andy Powell (one of two original guitarists) copy righted the name unbeknownst to the other original members of the band.............carries on with the name............ that is the Wishbone Ash that others have mentioned. They tour America a more than Martin Turner does.....you can get updates from wishboneash.com or follow them on FB ...................... personally, I prefer the Martin Turner band

  75. L.... E....

First time I heard WA, many years ago, I thought that they made things perhaps a bit too complicated. Now, when I have grown up a bit, I LOVE it

  76. R.... B....

Always loved this track, the dark intro at the beginning Handy it's about a man who's Handy..can handle him self...brave unafraid Raw.

    R.... B....

+Richard Buxton uh, doubtful, Richard. It's a reference to W.C. Handy....

Rock is dead, but with songs like this we won't forget it entirely.

    l.... ....

Check out Greta Van Fleet, and new rock group with the old rock sound. Highway Tune and Safari Song should bring back the old days. These are young kids that were influenced by the old days or rock.

    l.... ....

@gemini232003 I really can't recommend the band Earthless enough. It's just incredible how great they are! If they're too heavy, the guitarist has another band with a more mellow sound called Golden Void.

    l.... ....

Rock cant die / Freestyle jamming is always in season / Look for it , dont listen to bullshit on most radio stations / Im 58 , and I'm telling you , kids are out there jamming still ! There will always be people with good taste !

    l.... ....

Rock might be dead for you my friend, but for us, the die hard fans, we listen to it everyday and it lives in our heart and is part of our being...
