Winwood, Steve - Vacant Chair Lyrics

When a western man loses his best friend many days are spent in years
And without belief he knows his empty grief is a name for his own fears
Oh, the eyes are still. Oh, but even sleeping

My dearest friend till we meet again and ever, we'll be blowing
Maybe weep awhile for those below; until then I'll keep on going
But oh, the heart, the hurt keeps on keepin' on, on and on

Let them alone for those down there speak our sorrow
While we can't share the joke together, yeah, we keep on going
My dearest friend till we meet again
O-ku Nsu-kun No-ko
The dead are weeping for the dead

I agree! We used to play this at the stadiums on tour with Steve Winwood and it always gave me chills .. and Viv Stanshall lyrics and he came on the tour bus for a few days. A great gentleman. I had a great time playing drums on the Arc of a Diver tour 1983-1984

oops!  correction here!   "While you see a Chance" came from the "Chronicles" album and the hit song "Night Train" came from "Arc of A Diver". Anyway, music at it's finest!  Thank you Mr. Winwood for all the wonderful music in the past!  I don't know what this shit is today that they call music!! can anybody answer this???? Now a days you don't have to possess any fucking talent to sing in this era.

    S.... M....

You were right the first time. While You See A Chance is from the Arc Of A Diver album...first track

I am African American age 55  who usually listens to, The Isley Brothers, Barry White, The 4 Tops, Temptations etc. Then I heard Mr. Steve Winwood with his soulful voice. I actually own this entire CD along with his other music. This is song is so very easy to listen to! I played this song to death!   I put Mr. Steve Winwood up there with the other extremely talented Caucasian Old School artists back in the day!  such as, Wham (George Michael), David Bowie, Thomas Dolby, Daryl Hall & John Oats = (this duo sounds black) and top the charts in black soul! and who can forget AWB "Average White Band" When the dance craze called "Locking" came out a lot of blacks like myself did the locking/robot dance to "Cut The Cake"  by AWB. Anyway, my favorite song by Steven Winwood was "While you see a Chance"  I believe this is on the "Arc Of A Diver" album. I plan to buy Mr. Winwood's Greatest Hits via amazon adhering to the "support your local record store"  P.s.  Did Steve Winwood use to sing with a group called "Traffic"?  I think that's right.

    S.... M....

Indeed he did. And as lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group before that, he was often likened--even as a teen (!)--to Ray Charles. Your enthusiasm about this song is so justified. That odd bit of scatting that begins at 2:42 haunts like a mantra!

    S.... M....

Spider-I believe the chanting in this Song is Swahili...Peace.

    S.... M....

The chanting is Swahili for "the dead are weeping for the dead"

    S.... M....

    Thanks!

One of the greatest music compositions of all time.Steve Winwood at his very best. One of the best songs one can dedicate to a close and dear friend or love. The emotion and the music composition along with the gradual incorporation of different musical instruments is truly the work of a genius.

    N.... G....

Spot on. One of his best songs. One of the best songs period

    N.... G....

YES!! I was lucky enough to play drums on the Arc of a Diver Tour /Winwood 1983-1984 and we'd play this song and the whole stadium would get goosebumps!! They'd sing the Swahili at the end with us as well. Great times!
