Winwood, Steve - Freedom Rider Lyrics
Like a hurricane around your heart when earth and sky are torn apart
He comes gathering up the bits while hoping that the puzzle fits
He leaves you, he leaves you
Freedom rider
Big man crying with defeat, see people gathering in the street
You feel him, you feel him
Freedom rider
When lightning strikes you to the bone, you turn around, you're all alone
By the time you hear that silent (or siren?) sound, then your soul is in the lost and found
Forever, forever
Freedom rider
Here it comes

Winwood, Steve Freedom Rider Comments
Anyone remember this being played on VH-1's My Generation with Peter Noone. Ah yes, the days when music channels played music, instead of reality shows about dummies, sluts and whores arguing with each other over who slept with who.
I love Chris Wood’s flute and sax in Traffics music. It gives their music a real magical edge.
Surprised Chris wood doesn't have a Selmer in his hands.
When was this? 1980? I remember this music being played around that time,Chris Wood dead by 1983.
Jazz rock.
classic magic
Great song!
Stevie Winwood, the most versatile musician on this or any planet.
I heard this version first.. ruined the studio version forever..
Nothing like live music.
saw 576 views of same song, felt left behind. this is a great heavily played tune. Love Steve and his versatile musicianship .. he keeps kickin for us, we must do the same for him
**********************************
Who is on drums?
Roger Hawkins: American drummer best known for playing as part of the studio backing band known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section of Alabama...
and Aretha Franklin. etc.@Julio César Báez Aguilar
Käsittämättömän Hyvää Musiikkia!!
This the type of song that will have U late 4 work while listening to it @ 8:45am on the parking lot.
LOL i do this all the time... i cant leave till whatever song im listening to is over ! lol.... as long as its not like "Child in Time" or "Stairway"... those are too long and id def. be late !!
Lmao I’m running late looking at this video 😂
What a time in our history, as humans everything changed. I'm glad to be part of that era.
no kiddin..for the folks who lived it, much more memorable
Excellent, brought back a lot of memories, great in concert......
What he need to frame the face of Steve Winwood (which certainly does not excel in beauty...) when Chris Wood is playing deliciously the sax? idiot of a telecameramen, very stupid
+Timbacubanera Not sure what your problem is with camera technique. This is 1972, remember. Plenty of time with Chris Wood , including some excellent footage up close.. Overall very good job.. Thanks for posting.
Ralph Kramden
Timbacubanera Steve is beautiful, although this WASN'T his best look, Chris is however, something else. Never in my life have I seen such a fricking sexy man
Not a thing wrong with Steve....he's adorable! You look in the mirror👎
The Hammond-izer!
Ron Burgundy would be proud of that bitchin flute solo!
Two people had the mute button on.
As usual Steve Winwood is burning up that Hammond B3 ! Best jazz and rock organ ever .
Patrick Rogers He is great but he doesn't equal Ray Manzarek.
BS, plus Steve can play multiple instruments.
NO NO NO, en los bongos esta tocando es, Rebop Kwaku Baah. :-)
well did not know you took me away...but life is like that!!!!!!!
Cool stuff, has that early 70's organ sound and flute, Jethro Tull like.
yes their sound was/is marvellous...seemed to echo through the mind especially the Low Spark of High Heeled Boys...all time favourite of mine...
incredible...
another good one... love this way playing keyboards.
me too Dario....
I always remember this song about this time of year!!!...:)O(:..
Charles Chandler interesting comment I relate to
Actually it's Rebop Kwaku Baah on bongos. Story goes he was fired on the 1974 tour for singing throughout but then kept turning up so they kept him on!
I remember that I wouldn't buy a CD player until Traffic was available on CD.
the best version of this song .. and a rare one with Steve on B3.. I much prefer this to any version with him on piano.. also love the way he sings the title twice.. way better than the studio version!
This whole album kicks maximum ass......freekin AMAZING!
I will never play a tambourine as good as Jim Capaldi....
We all were once.
Chris Wood was so great . Super talented & waaaaay underestimated . Such a loss .
actually this DVD isn't too hard to find . Check amazon or Ebay
omg traffic is fantastic ! pure art
I'm 61. I thought they were great and fabulous in 1970. I appreciate them more now. I think this song is about the Freedom Riders of the early 60's. I didn't realize that in 1970.
I was a stupid 18 year old.
elections, hallowe'en, full moon +sandy, whoa.
john dubé Strange but not strange. I also associate this song with this time ( Nov. 4, 2017 ) of year. More specifically a certain rural area/region where someone I know used to live. Wonder if writing this will make "something happen" ????
why isnt capaldi playing drums ?
That is just soooo good
This are musicians
So cool! Anyone who disagrees is just a fool. Steve Winwood is awesome.
I believe it to be one of the first "Barcus-Berry" pick-ups and was fitted to the mouthpiece. (a transducer unit) Brass instruments were fitted in like manner, with the pick-up transducer installed to the mouthpiece, and, by God, it WORKED !
I was set to see the show,I got busted 4 days before they played in S.M. Thank God for this youtube thing and all uploads,,,,,,,THX to all who did this....
@beaverteeth92 David Hood was playing bass on that gig. You can also see Roger Hawkins on drums. It's the same rhythm section as on "Traffic on the Road" from the following year.
Yes, Mussel Shoals rhythm section. I was at the SF show, same year.
chris wood was a bad man... stevie winwood no slouch either lol
@beaverteeth92 Indeed he is.
One of the best of all time.
do u have any idea what goes into this??????
I wish I would have been there for Traffic and Cat Steven concert at the Filmore East November 1970. that must have beeen amazing!!!
Was there!!
Fu*king Chris Wood!... God Rest his Talented ass !
@roserosepat this and all music will continue to live on so long as people continue to share treats like this over the internet
its very cool!
Chris Wood, thank you for sharing your talent with us.RIP.
TRULY AWESOME manipulation of Hammond drawbars. And I'll pay top dollar for the shirt that Steve's wearing in this!
How is that sax miked? There's a thin cord mounted at the reed almost. Wouldn't think you could get a good sound that way..
I always loved Steve's Hammond work.. Always wished somehow he would have been the guy in YES rather than Rick Wakeman..
Freaky cool, man! Awesome
das ist meine musik!!!
Yeah so chris woods kind of the man.
@freedumb2003
Um, I meant just now I was playing behind him to the YT sounds. I could never have played at that level, since I was young then and now am too old.
How cool! I got to play jazz flute behind Chris Wood when he was on the sax!
I think I MIGHT have been qualified to carry his second-hand reed in a silk pillow.
So talented, so gifted, so much, so young his passing!
Well, he lives as a living spirit for me, anyway. I taught myself jazz flute and it was Chris Wood who I did then and now use as inspiration.
where is dave mason?
In and out of Traffic like a revolving door. My guess his ego couldn’t take being second fiddle to Steve Winwood.
That's awesome...the kind of music that makes me wish I was born 30 years earlier!
I wish it were "Freedom Writer!"...even if a few words that were written stealth; cryptic!...(but who pays a toll wen oui is just a hitchhiker!)...Rock n Roll!
If anyone disliked this, they would have to not like music. Just awesome concert and wish to thank all responsible for having it on here.
the percussionist's name is Rebop Kwaku Bah, this entire band was super tight, Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Barry Beckett, Chris Wood. Enjoy it!
Who is the Black guy on bongos?
Awesome song. John Barleycorn is one of my favorite albums.
first comment!
great stuff....
