Winter, Johnny - Prodigal Son Lyrics

Shine on, prodigal son.
Gotta have your morning glory
Keep on having your fun
It'll be the same old story soon
Soon it'll be afternoon
Sun's getting hot at the bind
Never mind

Keep on watching the sky
Keep on waiting to die
Keep on wondering why
Afternoon
Afternoon

Burn on, celestial star
Burn away the ties that bind you
Groove on wherever you are
Do you thing, the one will find you here
You won't have nothing to fear
But time's just slipping away
Day by day

Keep on watching the sky
Keep on waiting to die
Keep on wondering why
Afternoon
Afternoon

Shine bright, prodigal son
Rush off to your happy ending
Good night, celestial one
No use wasting time pretending now
Now that you've broken his vow
Hating your time and your space
Lose them rays

Keep on watching the sky
Keep on waiting to die
Keep on wondering why
Afternoon
Afternoon

  9. v.... ....

Derringer a perfect match for Winter just as Mick Taylor was a great match with Keith Richards...

  10. G.... ....

Johnny Winter And, the studio album, great rock album. I thought Johnny and Derringer were tremendous together. I truly believe if the And wouldn't have broken up so soon, they would have become as renown as the Allman Brothers.

  11. J.... 5....

    DIRTIEST TEXASBLUES EVER...

  12. k.... M....

    Johnny was the man

  13. M.... D....

Seeing this band at the Fillmore in 71 was one of the highlights of my life! Went to both shows and was never the same again!!

  14. J.... D....

Such a great album, such a great song. Johnny for the first time allows another guitarist to play some fine lead fills on this and of course, blows the doors off with his own solo. JOHNNY WINTER AND was a departure from the Blues and the the McCoys helped make it a Rock 'n Roll triumph. It should've been a bigger hit........

  15. R.... O....

My mum always said to turn it down

  16. R.... O....

Have also this album with Deep purple Machine Head .. GFR also Survival..

I was nineteen when I got this??? Bet i won't get back there again*

  19. G.... ....

Prodigal Son, great tune, Johnny Winter And, great album! Without a doubt, he belongs R&R HOF, not only as a bluesman, but as a great rocker!

  20. S.... ....

Skynyrd guitarists (King, Collins or Rossington) snagged this main riff for "The Needle and the Spoon" 2-3 years later.
Johnny was extremely underrated as popular as he was. He's rarely mentioned in top 10 or 20 lists but he'd mop the floor with several of the players who are consistently on those lists.
"I'm yours and I'm hers" is another great JW track from this era. That slide riff is oddly similar to Jimmy Page's "Traveling Riverside Blues". Johnny was sort of a "Dangerfield" player (no respect) along with guys like Alex Lifeson, Mick Taylor, Billy Gibbons, JJ Cale, Jake E. Lee and all Skynyrd guitarists.

    S.... ....

Saw him in SF once at a small private club. He loved his clubs.

    Shine on prodigal son,
Got to have your morning glory,
    Keep on having your fun,
It'll be the same old story, soon.
    Soon, it will be afternoon,
Fun's getting harder to find, never mind,

    Keep on watching the sky,
    Keep on waiting to die,
    Keep on wondering why,
    Afternoon, afternoon, yeah.

    Burn on celestial star,
Burn away the ties that bind you,

    Keep on watching the sky,
    Keep on waiting to die,
    Keep on wondering why,

    Shine bright, prodigal son,
    Listen to your happy ending,
    Good night celestial one,
No use wasting time pretending, now,
Now that you've broken your star,
Made in your time and your space,
    Oh, you'll lose that race,

    Keep on watching the sky,
    Keep on waiting to die,
    Keep on wondering why,
    Afternoon, afternoon, yeah.

    alright missy

  42. H.... J....

The man will always be missed for his growl and grand guitar playing rock or blues !

    H.... J....

    Very true.

  43. d.... ....

The band behind him is the McCoys. They were pretty good too, obviously, since they're backing Johnny Winter. Had a hit back in the day, "Hang on Sloopy". They could play the Blues well.

    d.... ....

I think Derringer does the 2nd guitar break.

    d.... ....

holy crap am i that old that i remember Hang on Sloopy...wow. i think i got the 45 at the local Woolworths(yeah, when shit was 3/100)-if i only had the stuff i had as a kid,,,,,,JDW lived a lot longer than most Albinos so what ever he was puttin in his bod either kept him alive longer or?? it was sad back a few yrs before he died to see him have to be lead onstage and SIT with the Firebird-but he still in the end of the show blew the roof off the place...he's up in the clouds jammin with the best of em-but, johnny NEVER got the "props" he was due. never. not to put down certain "guitar slingers" that spit out cds like they are watermelon pits -one after the other-there is NO comparision to those lightnin fingers of Johnny's-IMHO-

  44. T.... H....

alright...5 am and I don't have to work today! Long Live Johnny Winter

  45. C.... D....

Shine on you Prodigal Son !!

    R.I.P. Johnny Winter -  7/16/14

  55. J.... C....

    Awesome

  56. a.... ....

derringer playing thru a leslie speaker is awesome. it makes the song.

    a.... ....

algrap1954 it is Johnnys guitar through leslie

    a.... ....

@Niels Anders Poulsen I don't know if it's a Leslie but Rick's playing lead fills (left channel) Johnny on rhythm and main solo (right channel)

    a.... ....

@J Dubbiyou I think it is Rick playing the main riff and Johnny playing the fills with leslie Sound.

    a.... ....

    It's a FACT!!
Johnny is in the right channel, and Derringer is on the left playing through a Leslie and doing the fills, and the first shorter solo.
If you know the distinct guitar styles of each, it's easy to tell.
Listen to the song Jesse Brady (L.P. version) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5FeES0brPnU
by the McCoys (Derringer came from the McCoys) and you can hear the same style and Leslie effect. Derringer was also known to use a phaser which can get a similar effect.
You can also hear a similar sound and style on this McCoys track https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FwlPDRxDSFY
    It's Derringer.
    :)

    a.... ....

Rick uses similar effects on Brother Edgar's Jasmine nightdreams album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUX355SsImo

  57. R.... C....

got this album in vinyl, 44 years ago   yeah johnny winter AND

    R.... C....

I liked Johnny since day one, those who follow are so very loyal to him, also Rick Derringer days. I lost all my vinyl from 1968 to 1975 so sad, and it was all blues and rock, now repaced with CD's .. good one to blast on the car sterio. Thanks for your reply..

    R.... C....

10 then had it also excellent funky music

  58. P.... C....

Best dame Bluesman that ever played! I've been listening to his music since I was 14 & have been to 5 of his concert's...One of his best one's was in 1973 at the garden's in Toronto...The speed of his finger's playing his Firebird!...No one, but no one compare's to him..Now at 56, he sound's better & better.

    P.... C....

    He's 70 years old.

    P.... C....

    @Robert Moore
     And gone....

    P.... C....

Paul was saying HE was 56 not Johnny

  59. a.... ....

    Outstanding outstanding outstanding

  60. s.... p....

I've dug Johnny since 1970. He's gone through many changes, but I've loved them all. Keep rockin' those blues, brother...

  61. D.... H....

I played with Johnny and Edgar from 1959 to 1965 I learned enough music to play for 53 years.

    D.... H....

Totally awesome, you are fortunate, you must be a fine musician to be in with Johnny and Edgar Winter

    D.... H....

That is awesome man!! I bet you have many great memories.

  62. C.... S....

Along with Buddy Guy one of the last connections to the Delta Blues

  63. m.... m....

    Love this album

  64. t.... ....

One of my favorite albums since it was new at Longhair Music in Portland. Saw Johnny twice in a small club in San Diego 80's/90's as a power trio. Holy Shit! He's the master of filling any venue with one stunning guitar - no second player required. But I also feel that his work with Ricky Derringer was some of the best ever put on vinyl - by anyone. Prooves that two guitars don't have to be identical, and one ego doesn't have to eclipse another. Raw talent and playful mutual respect.

  65. M.... R....

have to agree..Derringer complimented Johnny...made Johnny work a bit harder..brought his very best.

    M.... R....

absolutely! I read once that Johnny didn't care much for the AND album. I think it's his best because it isn't his standard Blues album and the McCoy's are superb

  66. c.... ....

I heard these guys play in LA 1970. I bought a ticket for "Johnny Winter" as I was already a fan - but was completely blown away by the dual lead attack with Rick Derringer. They did this song so well - they were the best band in the world at the time in my opinion.

  67. D.... R....

    Immense! Mister Winter.

  68. j.... ....

    you forgetting Edgar friend?

    j.... ....

Man, when Edgar did Frankenstein in our little southern town- blew us away!! Yea!!

  69. K.... M....

Winter does not have an s on the end. just sayin

  70. j.... m....

I love all your stories but his last name is WINTER!...No S people.Do your homework and show a little respect by getting his last name right at least

  71. b.... ....

This is one of my favorite albums of all times. I wore out my vinyl copy long ago. I just bought it again on CD. The guitars work so tastefully and perfectly together. What adds to the perfection, it sounds effortless, and the tempo never accelerates. Absolutely pristine.

  72. c.... g....

wow killer tune from this lp which i still have and this is gotta be the best one on there Rock On

  73. M.... ....

Winter/Derringer were one of the great guitarist teams imo. Derringer's tendencies towards pop were always tempered nicely by Winter's bluesy rawness. Both killer guitarists. Can it ever get any better than Johnny Winter And Live? The classic electric blues album!

  74. l.... ....

I have a few stories like that myself.. :o)

  75. S.... ....

Me too. I remember my older brother turning me on to "andLive" ........never looked back.

  76. b.... ....

Rick Derringer smokes. I love Johnny Winters playing, one of my favorites, but I saw Rick open up for him in the late 90s and he was out of this world. He stretched out so far that when Johnny got up and played a straight blues/rock format it was a little boring. Nothing against Johnny but Derringer was the heavy on that tour.

  77. B.... ....

It sounds like Rick Derringer on the second guitar solo.

  78. t.... ....

    Thanks for posting this masterpiece.

  79. r.... ....

    Johnny Winter And...The McCoys!

  80. c.... 9....

I see where Lynrd Skynrd got the idea for Needle and the Spoon.

  81. 0.... ....

Well if ya like this one I believe maybe we're all Prodigal maybe just not much as JW!

  82. B.... ....

Thank you man for uploading this. Been searching for this for ages. Thank you, thank you.

  83. t.... ....

As a 14 yr old back in 1970 I recall going to my fave record shop and my eyes were drawn to the cover of this LP.
Such an economical cover but SO perfect. Loved every track on it.
To this day it remains my fave Johnny Winter record.

    t.... ....

    Same here!

  84. C.... ....

    Thanks for posting this!
