Fantastic rock band of the 80s

Theyre in my top five hard rock/hair bands. Their original 3 cds are almost all killer and lil to no filler. The main filler song I dont like and never have being the remake of Purple Haze.

To me this song is about a man asking himself, " what is the meaning of life"?... What is my purpose? Maybe he's asking GOD, or possible a lover..? Anyway, great song..

Kip said in an interview that he wrote this about his then girlfriend Rachel Hunter, the model. Song is pretty deep. Love it, I LOVE ALL of Kips music

God knows I miss these days. When bands like Winger, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Motley Crue ruled the world. And they did it their way. In Wingers case they came at the end of the 80's and showed that the 90's could have had so much promise. But instead a generation grew up thinking they were to be made fun of because of a cartoon that made fun of them. When in reality they were a much better band than the bands that were picking on them. At least in my opinion.

Great band. F all the haters. These guys are skilled musicians that write strong, heartfelt rock tunes. If you strip away the 80s production, they'd still be great rock tunes.

I am a glam metal fans...but i just hear Winger few years ago. Never see their video during mid 90's in MTV, never hear their song in any rock compilations. I accidentally hear that Miles Away from some youtube channel in billoard glam metal compilation few years ago. But that didnt make me interesting too much in them yet. Finally, i read something interesting about them and Metallica in Winger wikipedia. Who the fvck in this world is feeling good enough to challenge...METALLICA!!!?? I thought it was just a joke. But after hearing this song few moment ago.....technically Winger actually in Dream Theather level. Their guitar player to be honest is amazing. Their jamz session in this end part of this song tell me..they are really something. For almost 2 decades i put Devil in Disguise from Yngwie Malmsteen as best fading end part of a song....but now..it seems Rainbow in the Rose make my music reference chancing a little bit.

the musicianship on this song is really good. Winger is under rated. This is coming from a dude who listens to tons of extreme metal. I have a soft spot for these dudes. They bring a prog influence into Glam Metal. Something I have never heard any other band do in the genre. I used to hate this stuff but after really giving Glam a chance, there are some good bands and they are definitely METAL. They bring the fun and party into music that is normally very bleak in lyrical content. Kip Winger is a great singer and a very solid bass player. Reb Beach is one of the best shredders in metal on top of having one of the best drummers of all time in their band mr Rod Morgenstein. Hell even the rhythm guitar/keyboard player (forget his name) is extremely talented! The guy can actually lay down some shredding leads as well. Why oh why did I not give some of these bands a chance before? Glam stole all of the great metal guitar players of the 80's too. Anyone know Harry Cody from Shotgun Messiah?? That guy RIPS! I give respect to these bands. Hate the look but hey, thats what was popular at the time so it was normal. Thrashers and even myself called these guys posers. Nah, they just worshiped bands like Van Halen and New York Dolls.

I've converted a few new Winger fans. My argument is, if you like Queensryche, Winger is basically the same kind of band, but with less pretentious lyrics.

I doubt winger or any of those mid/later 80s glam bands even liked the new York dolls lol, nikki sixx and gnr seemed to be the only ones obssessed with new York dolls, stooges and aerosmith which could explain the live sloppiness of crue like the dolls and stooges they didnt have talent but attitude. Nikki would shit on all bands in the late 70s and 80s wondering where all the rockstars like johnny thunders were at and how rock was dead.

I just discovered the analogy between Winger and the Police. Both were too accomplished to comfortably sit in their perceived genre.

They should have written more like this and fewer like '17'.

+Paul Blackburn 17 is a brilliantly written song when you dive into it musically. It's just the lyrics that throw people off.

They actually did,just listen to the albums ''Pull'','''Winger IV'', their latest studio album ''Better Days Coming'',which have a prog sound or my favorite ''Karma'',which is more straight up heavy-rock.

Musically-speaking, 17 is bad ass. EVERY riff in that song is awesome and very few parts completely repeat. Each lick has a slightly different resolution than the previous.

Also, when Rod moves the backbeat during that post-solo breakdown, holy shit... All of that on an anticipation groove (1/16th ahead of the bar). It's one of the best pop-metal songs in ANY decade. Deceptively-complicated.

Regarding the lyrics, Kip borrowed the title from the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing." But if we want to get REALLY technical, the band formed in NYC where the age of consent is 17, not 18.
