Winehouse, Amy - Brother Lyrics

Brother
It's so much that I could never say to your face
But by now
You should know the world and all its ways
So find your place

How do I find words that do not condescend
When she bore you before me
Cause she doesn't need a child she needs a friend
A son, not a sob story

(Now you look out for her the way she did for you)
And your priority it must be heard
(Now you look out for her the way she did for you)
Cause we'll never be the way we were

She can't always be there just to hold you down
Our mother
When you are at a age now, well life turns around
My brother

Realize that you don't have to answer to no man
Responsibility comes down to you
But how can I expect you to understand
When you live life like it's so run-through

(Now you look out for her the way she did for you)
And your priority, it must be heard
(Now you look out for her the way she did for you)
Cause we'll never be the way we were

The way we were
We'll never be
At your priority, it must be her

This song describes verbatim my brother. He could have been a much stronger son for my mom when she needed his help bit instead he always put the focus on himself and would tell her about all his problems and just bring her down and upset her. He wasn't a good father to his son thus my mom having to basically support their needs. My mom's health was failing and it still did not change his ways. The house needed repairs and he could have did alot to really step up to the plate and help her when she was always there for us. I love my brother dearly; he has a wicked sense of humor and we were very close growing up and like the song he was a year older then myself. The giggling in this song reminds me of our childhood years, being silly and having fun but then like the song says things change and the roles reverse and the care our mother gave to us must now be focused on her and not ourselves. A very insightful song. So many times I wanted to remind him of this but I never could figure out the right words without him thinking I was bashing him. He adored our mom but just never quite learned how to step up and be the man she needed in her fragile years. He was never consistent and could have done so much more. She never demanded or expected from us she let us determine that from our hearts and despite my brothers shortcomings she dearly loved us and knew us so well.

My mother passed away a little over a month ago. This song resonates with me so much! My brother was there for her but always carried his problems along with him and I feel like he could have just been present for her and not himself. My mother and I were close but not as close as my brother was. My mother was a heroine addict and ultimately died from the drug:( I feel like my brother was only at her side because they were both addicted and helping supply each other with drugs. My mom had cancer in 2018 and I was with her every step of the way. My brother is clean now but my heart still aches wondering why my little brother wouldn't just tell me that him and my mother needed help. I would've helped them both had I knew what was going on. It's too late now and all I have left is him...
