Willie Nelson - Wind Beneath My Wings Lyrics

It must have been cold there in my shadow to never have sunlight on your face
You've been content to let me shine you always walked a step behind
I was the one with all the glory while you were the one with all the strength
Only a face without a name I never once heard you complain
Did you ever know that you're my hero and everything I'd like to be
I can fly higher than an eagle but you are the wind beneath my wings

It might have appeared to go unnoticed I've got it all here in my heart
I want you to know I know the truth I would be nothing without you I miss everything about you
Did you ever know...
You are the wind beneath my wings

I first heard this when my Mets wrapped up the pennant in '86. they played it over the PA system while highlights of the season were shown. Not a dry eye in the house. Still my favorite version.

john rogers I am sorry for your loss! I lost my dear sister many years ago at a young age! Years before she passed I had this song playing on my cassette player with Lee Greenwood singing it. I handed it to her and asked her to listen to it. When she did, I told her it was my song to her. She listened and then cried. She truly was my hero! They played this at her funeral and it just tore me up. You are so very right, you don't know what you have until they are gone! My Blessings to you! You do know we will all meet again!

This is the second version of this song I heard in 1985. The first was Colleen Hewitt in 1980. I think i prefer Willie's. Of course there is Bette Midler and Sheena Easton's versions too.

gerard strong Lee Greenwood is my favorite singing this song! I don't even know who the original artist is?

You should listen to Lee Greenwood sing this song! He does a fantastic job with it!!

    S.... T....

I did. And yes it is good. But I feel Colleen's version better. So sad to hear how she was treated in later years!!

I have listened to four or five different versions of the song, and each artiist brings something of themselves to it. But for me, Colleens arrangment and what I think is the  her honesty in her vioce. Tragically she has been the victim of terrible domestic violence, and while this song is not about her oppressor, a positive song about inner strength is great to hear from her...
