Willie Nelson - Sad Songs And Waltzes Lyrics
I'm writing a song all about you a true song as real as my tears
But you've no need to fear it cause no one will hear it
Cause sad songs and waltzes aren't selling this year
I'll tell all about how you cheated I'd like to the whole world to hear
I'd like to get even with you cause you're leavin'
It's a good thing that I'm not a star you don't know how lucky you are
Though my record may say it no one will play it
Cause sad songs and waltzes aren't selling this year
[steel]
Well it's a good thing...

Country/real music IS THIS!!! It will never be the same again, will it?
Willie Nelson is a national treasure
"Its a good thing im not a star", I guess she wasnt lucky in the end huh
Wow 20 years later I find out it's a cover song and not Cake. Respect to Mr. Wilson

Tyler childers brought me here
I STILL have my ORIGINAL album, PLUS 45s, 1973. I've never heard of Cake.
You sound like a hipster lol
Great band. They do a lot of covers of the classics, from this song to Frank Sinatra to Gloria Gaynor (I Will Survive).
Because no one likes you and you never had a birthday party?
Who the fuck is cake? I leave cakes out in the rain!
Yoddle kid should do this next
anybody can recommend me another song like this? slow country. i usually hear this kind of song in the middle of nowhere lonely dinner
Waltz across Texas, Lay Down Beside Me,
Nobody answers when I call your name by Vince Gill, I'm over you by Keith Whitley, Promises by Randy Travis are a few slow sad ones I like
It's kind of ironic that this isn't widely known as being originally by Nelson. You know, cause the song is about not selling.
sexbebas
Many people don't realize that this is the original song. For a while I thought it was Cake
@Colter Pett Til two minutes ago I did too!!! feel so betrayed by my youth!
how do people dislike this smh wtf
Nothing like a double barrel of Willie straight to the face.
I could go for a double barrel to the face right now
Willie is the most.....
..."because sad songs and waltzes will never sell again." According to the modern country music scene.
There are still a few traditional style artists.
Sturgill Simpson covers this well.
Holly mother of God!
Cake did an excellent cover
willie nelson: genius
Bob's version yesterday evening in Mainz was amazing!
yes...you are right. Dylan played this song in Mainz. Only one time. One and only one wonderful time...
The song "Sad Songs And Waltzes" is a very good song. But I have to say, I don't mean to sound like an asshole, Keith Whitley sang it better than ol' Willie, I'm sorry.
I was hoping someone would mention Keith in the comments section. I agree with you, Roger. Keith's voice and instrumentals are unbeatable on this song.
in those old days i used to live on roosvelt drive Ketchikan no water.
Peter Oleson
been in the same shape.👍
One of my favorite Willie songs. Personally, I think this Willie's best album - it has a certain I don't know what, that makes it special. I'm on my third copy of the album.
DoubleJ1203 are you eating them??
I don't understand why people even compare covers to the original. There is no "best song". The beauty of music is that anyone can create it, and be valued equally for their artistic expression. Cake didn't try to out-do Willie by playing his song. They chose to perform it because they love it.
+Gregory Maslyn So I'm not allowed to have a favorite? Or I'm not allowed to SAY my favorite? Seems kind of messed up to not let people give their opinion. No one's attacking anyone. We're just saying which version we like best.
+C.I. DeMann kills yourself
Yeah! Let's be an asshole! So cool and original!
i guess so. my personal preference is for the cake version, but that's the one i grew up with. Johnny Cash himself covered NIN's song Hurt, and it's a fantastic cover imo. in that case my perception is reversed, because again i grew up with NIN's version :P humans are so fickle eh?
@Donnie `You shouldn't wish ill will on anyone.
Willie, how can we miss 'em when they won't GO AWAY !!! Thanks, Bobby Jindal, Sean Hannity and Susan Powter, and, of course Dan Hicks and his HOT LICKS! Hay yo Jackie King ! lol
Can't beat the original.
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps...
Which is also a cover
Cake used to do a cool cover of George Jone's "The Race Is On" in their shows about 20 years ago.
This album had a profound effect on my musical perceptions and it DID help me through more than a couple of "sinking spells." lol
Both versions are great, and Willie Nelson is a legend.... However... The superior instrumental backing on the Cake version (especially the horns) makes it the better overall song.....
Willie's vocals are a bit better than Cake's version, but the horns in the Cake version just kill it. I gotta go with Cake for this one.
Sorry but no amount of horns can replace a steel guitar.
@steelplayer1 I will take the steel and organ over the trumpet too.
Yup Cake is better, sorry Willie.
cake is better.
MaKaKitozito Keith Whitley version is best
Had no clue Cake's was a cover...interesting.
That whole album was covers
GCraig, I think that's a spot on take on both versions. I wouldn't want to say which one is better, because they are both good, just different.
It's a very funny song lyrically and I think Cake really brings that out. Country wise Willie's version leaves you searching for the humor a little more and rest assured, he is the master! Great tune and portrait of a desparate little angry man who's been burned. I truly enjoy both versions.
Yes! It's such a funny song! I thought it was just me. I can't sing it without breaking into laughter. Genius!
although cakes version is good and it introduces me to this version, you can almost feel Willies pain as he sings it,its more moving.
I like the Cake version. It's good in it's own way. But yeah, the ORIGINAL is by far the best.
@danieljh Agreed. No question.
