Willie Nelson - Blue Rock Montana/Red Headed Stranger Lyrics

Well he rode into Blue Rock dusty and tired and he got him a room for the night
he lay there in silence with too much on his mind still hoping that he was not right
He found them that evening in a tavern in town in a quiet little out of the way place
And they smile at each other when he walked through the door
And they died with their smiles on their faces
They died with their smiles on their face
Don't boss him don't cross him he's wild in his sorrow he's ridin' and hidin' his pain
Don't fight him don't spite him let's wait till tomorrow maybe he'll ride on again

A true gem of an album.

I was 16 in 1975. I had grown up on the Beatles and then zeppelin, Floyd, ELP, Yes, Genesis, Who, etc. By 16, I was doing my best to stretch myself in music theory to understand Stravinsky, Bach, Mahavishnu, Coltrane, and the development of music over the centuries and especially the decades of the 20th century. Being an aspiring composer and being a serious student made me a snob. I dismissed everything country despite a vague awareness that you don't get the development of rock music in the '50s without the top electric guitar players of the early '50s playing solos in jazz, blues, or country tunes.

I'm 60 now, and realizing how much great music I've overlooked from the '70s. I completely blew off people like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggar, Emylou Harris, Kris K, and even Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. I knew some real life Archie Bunker types who were more toxic than the character on 'All in the Family.' Country music made me think of assholes that love country music. Here's what I didn't acknowledge: There's just as many assholes that love any other genre.

I came to this album by Nelson after doing some research to determine the very best of what I have always dismissed.

One thing that help a lot was the the Ken Burns PBS series on country music. I was moved emotionally by many of the stories of
the heroes who evolved the genre. It was particularly noteworthy to discover that the top educational influence for Hank Williams was an Afro-American blues guitarist. The guitar itself is considered a child of the banjo which of course comes from Africa. I loved learning about Charlie Pride. The Ken Burns people did an amazing job.

My day of reckoning is coming.

  5. B.... W....

    My favorite Willie Nelson record.

  6. J.... S....

Blindly hoping she wadnt a whore.

  7. J.... S....

They died because he invested the settle down idea.

  8. J.... S....

He found em in little quiet little out of the way place and blew their shit away.

  9. J.... S....

Or maybe he'll double back and 45 douche the establishment.

  10. P.... ....

This whole album is an American Masterpiece. But this 90 seconds is just true poetic genius. 12 lines. and he tells you an entire heartbreaking story.

Well, he rode into Blue Rock, dusty an' tired,
And got him a room for the night.
He lay there in silence with too much on his mind.
Still hoping that he was not right.
But he found them that evening at a tavern in town,
In a quiet little out of the way place.
And they smiled at each other when he walked through the door.
And they died with their smiles on their faces.
They died with their smile on their face.
    Red Headed Stranger.
Don't boss him, don't cross him.
    He's wild in his sorrow,
He's riding an' hiding his pain.
Don't fight him, don't spite him,
    Just wait till tomorrow,
    Maybe he'll ride on again.

Sadly, the days of the storytelling country singers are gone

    J.... ....

No, you still have a few. Jamey Johnson, Chris Stapleton are a couple of them.
