Williams, Paul - What Would They Say Lyrics
What would they say
If we up and ran away
From the roaring crowds
And the worn out city faces
Would they carry on and on
Or would they let us go
Would they tag along
Or would they know to
Leave us alone
We'd live in the country
Leave us alone
We'd make it just fine
Happy in a one room shack
And we'd not look back
What would they do
If they found out we were through
With all the little lies
And the downtown aggravations
That we'd traded them away
For a quiet country day
That we had hoped to share
Would they try to find out
Where we were or
Leave us alone
We'd live in the country
Leave us alone
We'd make it just fine
Happy in a one room shack
And we'd not look back
Now would we
What would they say
If we up and ran away
Ran away

Magical!
This song makes me cry.
Reminds me of the John Travolta made for TV film Boy in the Plastic Bubble... Memories...
This is for Bobby. You are the boy in the plastic bubble. Peace.
Yes, they still do make songs like this. The writer, Paul Williams is still alive and writing. Just listen to We've Only Just Begun, Evergreen, Just an Old Fashioned Love Song, Rainbow Connection and hundreds more. Even the Love Boat theme.
I can’t believe this song wasn’t a monster hit! I loved this song!
I love music from Paul Williams
Really brilliant pop song writing by Paul Williams!
Beautiful song
People have to be high to come up with these lyrics. Wow! Sounds like a hippie song
Beautiful song
This song is very touching. Classic
I Love you Rhonda Thank you Dearest for honoring me with Loving me. God Bless you Mr Williams for composing this and countless other's that describe what I feel for my Rhonda.
I saw this movie before high school I loved it then I love it now I can identify with abuse that's why I go to therapy! If she calls and says are you coming with me I am going to say yes! I'm sorry, but I need her to live and I need her to love again!

Such a powerful song
He is truly blessed as we are to have him here to appreciate what he's so good at doing. The best of the Seventies music and he keeps it going because you can't change perfection. It'll always be great.
I love his music exspecially phantom of the paradise
So many beautiful songs !!!
He sings like touching you literally frm his heart na soul...one of my fav singer nw bcoz I don't knw him before,I'm only familiar with his voice not his name

Heart Check...ANYONE not moved by this wonderful song should rush to their doctor immediately and have their heart checked 'cause something is wrong !!!!
This makes me cry. I've always loved this song. And of course, I think of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.
I cry every time I see the movie's ending with John Travolta getting out of his plastic bubble while this song is playing through the whole scene.
freshprincess exactly when they ride off as the sun rises
very cool scene haunting
This is from my second favorite John Travolta movie, the first being Carrie (he dies in that one).
Although based on a true story it's fiction. The real Tod, David Vetter wasn't born until 1971. He died at age 12. 😢 We knew it was based on a true story and hoped "Tod" was able to leave his bubble and kiss the hot neighbor girl.
I'm sad now, leave me alone I want to live in the country 😢
such a talent..soo sad people have forgotten his beautiful songs
great songs
Yes, it was used in the very touching 1972 TV movie, NO PLACE TO RUN, [with Herschel Bernardi, Larry Hagman, and Scott Jacoby]. A gorgeous song by a vastly-underated talent IMHO.
Thank you for writing this, I also recall that Hagman movie and told people when The Boy in the Plastic Bottle came out that the song was not written for the Travolta movie - everyone thought I was nuts. I agree with you about Paul Williams - under rated.
Are you thinking of The Boy In The Plastic Bubble with John Travolta? This song was played in that movie, but you said "little boy" so I'm not sure if we're thinking of the same movie. :]
Gorgeous song that I remember from my childhood. Thank you for the memories.
How can this song not make you cry.
Just watched "The boy in the bubble." Havent seen that in like yeeeeeears. Renewed love of Paul WIlliams.
Your'e off your nut he's not dead.
Who are you thinking about? Paul Williams is still alive, still vibrant and just living life the way he wants to do.
Love this song and so many of his other songs. I had this album and I played it so much, probably to the annoyance of everyone else in the house. I didn't care because I loved it so much. Hey Stephen, you might want to check out the documentary called "Paul Williams: Still Alive". You might enjoy it.
What a beautiful song. I could only imagine the music he would have made if he didn't die so young. It's a shame drugs and booze took him from us so early.
Song starts 0:13
This song appeals to everyone who has ever felt discriminated - gay, straight, black, white, brown etc. I have loved this song since Paul wrote it, way back. I hope he comes back and writes more, cause we need him more than ever.
One of the greatest songwriters.
do you have the sheet music to this??
@TJames1081 I have wondered where this song was myself...the music of the 70s&80s were so thoughtfully written..this is the era where I belonged in the heart...what a touching commenatry TJames! ;-)
I also loved Paul, and your right he was always under rated, I still have albums of him, don't know where to play them but... He did a really cool skit with the Muppets that was pretty neat
Thanks Paul.
you cant get this song on itunes
randomness10117 nor in Spotify.
This song always brings small tears to my eyes. I can't think of any song prettier than it. Then throw it at the end of a beautiful movie like The Boy In The Plastic Bubble, and you got a big ol' blubber ball.
@tazznteddy The Boy In The Plastic Bubble. I've seen the movie a million times. Never gotten bored with it, and it always makes me cry.
YouTube bans the Helen Reddy version? Lame...
THE BOY IN THE PLASTIC BUBBLE !!!! THE END ALWAYS MADE ME CRY - IN A GOOD WAY . IT WAS SOOOOO AWESOME
He wrote this song 40 years ago, and I just discovered it. But, better late than never. I love the song, and I love Paul's performance. Thank you so much.
@OUTOBRIGHTON1234 what movie?
Over joyed to read your response!!! i've been beating people over the head for a long time disputing their inaccurate claims!!! I love this song and am so moved each time i hear it!! Thank you!! At least I now know I'm not losing it!!!
I will certainly check out the film (Melody) as soon as I can!
I've heard the critics say that Sgt.Pepper with the BeeGees was a miserable failure, now I'm not a hostile person...............I loved their music from that film!!!
@OUTOBRIGHTON1234 Yep a GREAT film. The '70's tv movies had a charm all their own. Check out 'Melody' if you haven't seen it. A GREAT British film with Beegees tunes. I think you will like :).

@Ronbo710 I'm so happy I'm not losing my mind!!! I saw the original film as well and it was so beautiful!! As I remember it was an orphan boy and an elderly man whom lived together and the social services wanted to remove the boy from his home and the boy repeatedly put the old mans mail in the mailbox next door. The day came when the athorities were to come for the boy to remove him and the man was to be placed in eldercare.......The up and ran away.....thus the song title!!! I LOVE IT SOO
@BeverlyJC Interesting I had too ! I wonder why , what is it about this song ?
@BeverlyJC Interesting I had too !
Great job! I like this song (and the film) very much! Thanks for posting it!
@thebackgroundartiste The name of that film was "No Place to Run" - Great TV flick. And predates the use of this great song in Boy in the Plastic Bubble.
@trebligageb
SOOOO TRUE! I have always love Paul~ SOOOO under rated/publicized!!i
oh my god....thank you for resurrecting this beautiful song. i always loved it, had the album it was on "Here Comes Inspiration." it's probably been close to 30 years since i heard it. still makes me cry. thank you again - i agree w/ trebligageb, what a gift to have paul williams' songs in our life - he is an irreplaceable treasure
Happy (belated ) 70th Birthday, Mr. Williams! God Bless You!
very naturally executed..its as if he is speaking to you directly from the HEART.. I love this song...it would take another Paul Williams to brought this song to the same LEVEL...
thank you so much.
What is it about this song that always makes me feel better. Good even. I guess its such a nice tune with words that mean so much. I quess I want to escape to another kind of world/life where its as beautiful and simple as the lyrics. Everytime I hear this I think of John Travolta riding off with Glynnis O conner on her horse at the end of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. .
I loe this classic artist Paul Williams! I miss my guitar and classic song books!
I love this Song its been used in so many Television movies of the Week........but it means sooooooooooooooooo much!
he captivates every heart with his music and unique style of singing
Paul is in a world of his own matched by none....there is...never has been.....anyone who has ever expressed such a deep emotion as easily as breathing.......set it to a melody...with quite magical yet melancholic....results ...I own one of his demo albums...with songs I have heard nowhere else...This song is one of the selections...I love every single song on it...It is one of my most favorite albums....of all time...of anyone in any music genre...anywhere...
Wished I could get it on a cd!!!!
I so glad i finally found my favorite singer. love his voice, his style and songs.

This song was sung by HELEN REDDY. It was the "B" side of a single called "Peaceful."
it's not "another version"...this is the writer, who also sung the song on boy in the bubble....Paul Williams is one of the most talented writers of the 70's...
