Williams, Lucinda - The Ghosts Of Highway 20 Lyrics

I know this road like the back of my hand
Same with the stations, on the FM band
Farms and truck stops, firework stands
I know this road like the back of my hand

Southern secrets still buried deep
Brooding and restless 'neath the cracked concrete
If you were from here, you would defend me
To the death along with the ghosts of highway 20

I went through hell when I was younger
Deep in the well you'll see the hunger
To find the strength I got within me
To wrestle with the ghosts of highway 20

Been sixty years, I don't want for nothing
But my tears, they keep on coming
And my fears continue to haunt me
Along with the ghosts of highway 20

I know this road like the back of my hand
Same with the stations, on the FM band
Farms and truck stops and firework stands
I know this road like the back of my hand

Who I am now to who I was then
I knew somehow I'd come back again
No doubt about it, I'm next of kin
To all the ghosts along highway 20

Run down motels, the fading billboards
Used cars for sale, the rusty junkyards
This two lane blacktop will never let me
Let go of the ghosts along highway 20

And I have seen the signs that say
We're closing in on the final days
But I got nothing to repent
My saving grace is with the ghosts of highway 20

I know this road like the back of my hand
Same with the stations, on the FM band
Farms and truck stops and firework stands
Yeah I know this road like the back of my hand

Every question and every breath
Every exit leaves a little death
In its wake a memory
That will wander with the ghosts of highway 20

Yeah I know this road like the back of my hand
Same with the stations, on the FM band
Farms and truck stops and firework stands
I know this road like the back of my hand

And I have seen the signs that say
We're closing in the final days
But I got nothing left to repent
My saving grace is with the ghosts of highway 20
Yeah, my saving grace is with the ghosts of highway 20
Yeah my saving grace is with the ghosts of highway 20

  1. C.... w....

I lived on highway 20 just west of Sisters from 1987-1999. What a tragic thing that happened there. Sad that it took so long to convict the guy.

  2. L.... H....

So sad ,the cops did not believe the girl who was the only one survived. So many lives gone by the hand of evil.

  3. H.... W....

Yes you must have seen the documentary from John Acroyd serialkiller on Highawy 20 Oregon, than you get it

    H.... W....

    Jou this song fits

  4. l.... s....

Perfect song and voice. Makes me cry. My heart truly aches for the brother left behind who felt he should've done more to protect his sister. Honey you were a child yourself. There's no blame on your part. I wish I knew the words to comfort you. I know how much my 2 sons love their sister. Please don't let this take you down. You deserve good things in this life. You know your sis wouldn't want you to be sad. God Bless You.

  5. R.... W....

Heartbreaking. This is so good I want and spent money on the album and so glad i did.

  6. D.... R....

It's such a haunting song, & a fitting tribute to all the lost souls, of a terrible serialkiller named J. Ackroyd. . God bless & keep 'em safe..❤

She has a unique vocal that adds so much impact to this folk song. I watched the entire documentary this song was played to. It saddened me that so much hate and carelessness existed against the guy's first victim and the only survivor. All that bigotry clouded the judgement of law enforcement. I lay the deaths of all those subsequent victims DIRECTLY at the feet of the police whose racism blinded their sense of justice.

Hey Lucinda! the phrase "a plenty" rhymes with Highway 20. I kept waiting for it to appear...lol. I'm not making light of anything at all. I've watched and read much on Ackroyd and am disgusted. I'm a lyricist and I simply made a lyrical connection that might seem cheesy to you, but there you have it.

Not in oregon. twenty sounds like TWUNNY there.

i was watching this documentary and heard this voice like gravel beneath the wheels of a car yet soft and sweet like melted candy. couldnt sleep last night until i put a face with it. Lucinda Williams. wow. this woman is one of the last of the real folk and country music singers. before the days of pop country. if you dont like country, i implore you to look up some of her music. she is a force like none other. if anything, her words will move you. haunting and beautiful

  10. D.... K....

This song is so fitting to the documentary of Ghost of Highway 20. This all took place in Oregon on highway 20. A very sad 5 episodes. RIP to all the women and girls that lost their lives to one horrible man...
Lucinda words and voice give this documentary the tone it needs. Great voice, Lucinda.

My name is Edward not Connie I worked for odot summer work I worked for painting crew we painted roads highway 22 Salem to Santiam pass at the junction is where region 2 ends picks up highway 20 all the way to Newport. 1994 we painted to the junction worked out of odot yard where leave paint truck, paint we drive pickups back to the valley. Summer at the junction was a skeleton crew. The paint crew would work out of junction winter some with families some alone for 3 months running snow plows most of these guys knew the guy they took me up a forest road not far from the junction you could look out for a ways they said the guy said he loved it up there, they find him there a lot, they said don't know what he'd liked about it, but they could find him there a lot. The story was creepy
