Williams, Lucinda - Essence Lyrics

Baby, sweet baby, you're my drug
Come on and let me taste your stuff

Baby, sweet baby, bring me your gift
What surprise you gonna hit me with

I am waiting here for more
I am waiting by your door
I am waiting on your back steps
I am waiting in my car
I am waiting at this bar
I am waiting for your essence

Baby, sweet baby, whisper my name
Shoot your love into my vein

Baby, sweet baby, kiss me hard
Make me wonder who's in charge

I am waiting here for more
I am waiting by your door
I am waiting on your back steps
I am waiting in my car
I am waiting at this bar
I am waiting for your essence

Baby, sweet baby, I wanna feel your breath
Even though you like to flirt with death

Baby, sweet baby, can't get enough
Please come find me and help me get fucked up

I am waiting here for more
I am waiting by your door
I am waiting on your back steps
I am waiting in my car
I am waiting at this bar
I am waiting for your essence

I am waiting for your essence

    Lucinda Williams. Simply the best.

  10. D.... L....

Aural sex. In case of Lucinda, break glass!

  11. K.... A....

This song is all the more powerful when it is realized that many people who like this song don't even seem to see that this is not a love song or a song in praise of sexual lust. It is a song about the nature of addiction and how sexual lust/addiction does the same thing to a person that drug addiction does: it turns them into a non-conscious, no-dignity, masochistic play-thing of a brute force that will lay them to waste; and in cool culture this sickness in fantasized into something cool. Lucinda Williams is far too perceptive and conscious to not be delivering this song with deadly irony. And the very fact that the song is often taken in the wrong way just shows how talented Lucinda Williams is. She sticks the desire and the addiction right in your face with no frills or dilution. This is the kind of song that Lou Reed wished he could have composed. And Bob Dylan has nothing on this woman.

And if you want to hear Lucinda's positive sequel response to this song then listen to Cold Day in Hell. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ujva6GtTuI

    Bella musica👍

  14. J.... M....

I love the way she uses the drug deal as a metaphor for sexual longing. This has to be one of the most brilliant songs ever written about desire.

I've found loads of great music thanks to stations like this. wtmd.org out of Towson, MD is another good one. These are ones I know of, but I'm sure there's more across the country doing the same thing and keeping real good music alive and well.

  44. J.... S....

This music is not for everyone. Just me and the most astute music lovers on our planet.

    J.... S....

You have a high opinion of your opinion. Music taste is a very personal thing. She is not a James Brown but who is. See how that works. Some people prefer Justin Bieber, not my taste but it is all about preference. She fucks up Gram Parsons songs.

    J.... S....

@stephen hancock read the original post again. Edit where necessary.

    J.... S....

robert donaldson I read and still she says only astute lovers of music. This women is not a music great, only fair and kind of sad.

I heard this on a car trip across the country the year it came out. The station on the radio went out just as the song was ending so I didn't get to hear who it was. I couldn't find out until a few months later. I had been a fan of Lucinda before that CD came out so I don't know why I didn't recognize her voice at the time,
